"Outlander..."

Post » Sat Nov 13, 2010 5:21 am

One of the details I really liked about Morrowind, and something that helped to give the player character a sense of identity without forcing a particular background on him or her, was that most NPCs referred to your character as "outlander." Particularly as it was often spoken in the barely-tolerant rasp of a dark elf.

In Morrowind, of course, there was a very straightforward reason for this - your character arrived from outside of Morrowind.

So naturally, I'm wondering what kind of terms, if any, the NPCs of Skyrim might apply to the PC. While it's likely to be relevant, how the player character begins his or her adventures in Skyrim probably belongs in another thread; I'm more interested in whether or not you think the player will be sufficiently distanced from the "average" NPC of Skyrim to warrant being given a nickname or title in the same way as in Morrowind. If so, what would that be? Would it apply equally to Nord characters?

Will you be known by different titles and given names depending on where in Skyrim you are, what actions you take, or how far you advance in the main quest?

Or, do you prefer this kind of title not to be used in reference to your character?

I'm hoping for some really good Nordic slang in Skyrim. I am most interested in what word will be substituted for N'wah! :D

As the main quest is set against the backdrop of a civil war, each side (the two major factions in the game) will likely have their own name for you. It might not be a nice name, depending on which side you are helping.

I don't mind it as long as it isn't racial in origin. I always felt like Outlander should have been used for non-Dunmer races. When playing a Dunmer, it felt so out of place having your own people use it on you. If they wanted it to mean stranger, I wish they would have used that word instead.

I think it's because, even if you were Dunmer, you were always someone raised outside of Vvardenfell. And they spotted you were brought up in a different culture with different ways.

They'll most likely stick with the way they did it in Oblivion, an Orc would most likely say to an Imperial, "What do you want, Imperial dog?", or something along the line of that. :P

Nord to another Nord "Welcome, my brother."

I want a nickname in Skyrim....since there's no classes I'd give me something to strive for instead of the heroic Dragonborn title.

Altmer and a mage to boot, they'll be calling me the worst kind of arrogant then. Seriuosly though I hope the player character is treated with distrust and cliqueiness ( is that a word? ) Weird to get out of prison to be greeted with so much.....cheerfulness. Maybe the Nords should call everyone else Southerner?

Nah, I hope we just get something great like Outlander.. Hotblood, perhaps? Southerner sounds good.

Southener or something like that doesn't work if you're a Nord?

The way "outlander" worked for Morrowind was because you came from Cyrodiil... but then again: how did EVERYONE in Morrowind know that? xD

Still, I really liked being called "outlander" in Morrowind :D
I would love something similar, other than dragonborn/dovahkiin...
