Go outside and play and quit demanding answers from me

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:59 am

I find Pete Hines' https://twitter.com/DCDeacon/status/655466652121899008 on Twitter particularly hilarious.

e.g. to nagging tweets demanding an answer on a list of 1,000 names, Pete said:

"it's Saturday. Go outside and play and quit demanding answers from me."

The reason I find this to be wonderful is because it plays to narrative that involves keeping the game pretty much secret until release (and that 'fans' are not entitled to know stuff pre-launch).

Two other games releasing soon, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Rise of the Tomb Raider have released

multiple trailers, multiple gameplay segments and you can even watch the start of both of those games online.

Do you see more games companies marketing the Bethesda way,

or is it just something only they can pull off?

I don't know if they are 'pulling it off' or not. Pissing off your fan base shouldn't be the companies goal you know.

...if people get "pissed off" about something so small, they probably need to take a break, go outside, and play. :teehee:

Pete seems very "human" from a PR standpoint lol, and what I mean is he's just some dude who says what he wants

Pete's got the right of it. That list of names will come out eventually, and there really is a world of better stuff to be doing on a Saturday than acting like Beth owes each individual every piece of info they want before release

I approve of Pete's statement. And even though he didn't mean it literally, I do. People need to unplug more than they do.

Oh I agree as well, but being derogatory to your fans is never a good PR move.

Personally I would like the list of names myself as I won't be starting a game until I know I've picked one. Just because.

Indeed, there is more to life than Fallout 4

If you think that's a derogatory statement, you're probably who it's directed at.

No, I never tweet and never asked Bethesda for the list of names. I assume someone will hack it out before the game is released. I'm not into harassing people for info.

But a derogatory statement is a derogatory statement regardless. Even I can see that.

Read the tweets. Guy said "y u no answer me" to get that response, and had a good sense of humor about it. Context. What's the big deal?

You keep using that word.

I'm not sure you know what it means.

You really took that out of context. Allow me to post what he was actually replying to:

"I bought a pipboy edition on the Bethesda store, will I get it on the 10th or will it ship on the 10th and can I play that day?"

And then 7 hours later:

"Pete y u no answer me"

This wasn't a case of someone acting like they had a right to know everything about anything in Fallout 4 they wanted to know about. They simply wanted to know if Bethesda's own store will get them their product the day it launches, or if they'll have to wait. I think that's a fair question. Now, I wouldn't have asked it on a Saturday/wouldn't expect an answer that day because I'm not sure he works weekends, but it's not an unreasonable thing to ask, and I don't think his reply was the best. To me, the whole "Go outside and play" thing kind of comes off as "You should cancel your preorder." Then again, I don't think Pete Hines conducts himself very well when it comes to dealing with the fanbase/customers. I'm not sure he has the right temperament to be the PR frontman and the one fielding questions and giving replies.

True, the "...and quit demanding answers from me." was probably somewhat poor phrasing.

edit:

Really? Ugh. :wallbash:

Yeah, I can see where Pete's reply came from.

Right. He had the good sense to leave out the "you [censored]" part that would have made it derogatory

But yes, it's good that they have a real man in there, instead of a PC BS spewing automaton
In other words, ToJKa Approves +10 :hehe:

That's a mature way to handle a tweet.

Just put words in the posters mouth.

That isn't at all blowing less than 140 characters out of proportion.

If you want to add imaginary words to things, you'll probably be offended by just about everything. Seems like a problem on your end, not the original post.

I actually agree with Pete here, whether he said it in jest or not. People need to get outside more, or at least do other things. I remember the days when you genuinely took a punt when you bought a game; no patches, no wiki guides, and you were lucky if you got a two page article in a magazine a week after launch. It was just you, your mates, and the game.

Yes times have changed, but frankly I think a large majority (or at least a vocal minority) take so many things within the modern industry for-granted. If nothing else Bethesda's current marketing strategy is at least pointing out just how spoilt we all really are. It may not be a popular route to take, but I actually think it's a really good thing to make people think about their lives and just how lucky you are to even get the opportunity to buy games like this.

Lol. I'm with Pete on this one. There are probably better ways to get such information than tweeting Pete freaking Hines. I like Bethesda's attitude overall, and not caving to many modern gamers' sense of entitlement is alright in my book.

Please, if you don't know what it means just use Google. I stopped faulting this generation for being educated in the US a long time ago.

That's what the OP did with his pretending that Hines' tweet was in response to something it clearly wasn't about. And given that I'm seeing a lot of people throw around the idea that the person was acting entitled about pre-release information like the list of names and marketing makes me think that most people are unaware what was actually being asked.

Still not convinced you know the definition of the word.

Someone tweets Pete asking why they won't answer him, only in a slightly more childish manner and gets a reply in the same vein.

The initial question was, in fairness, perfectly reasonable within the modern market.

Not being willing to wait until a working weekday for an answer however is entitled.

When my children where younger and spoke to me as a child would I did not respond in kind. I did not throw temper tantrums, stomp my foot or get louder. I was the parent and acted accordingly. A PR person with a company should not stoop down to the level of the people directing questions at them. IMO they should be above that or they need to find another job.

EDIT: I get it that everyone has a bad day though ... even parents.

I wouldn't call it perfectly reasonable. The answer to his question was, I think, boldly presented on the page with the item he ordered. The estimated ship date is November 10. The estimated ship date is subject to change without notice.
