Overhauls, or little tweaks?

Post » Wed Nov 12, 2014 11:29 am

So, do you like using overhauls like requiem that change basically everything?
Or maybe you prefer your game as it is, with small tweaks, additional stuff like armor and weapons and unofficial patches to keep the game as close to vanilla as possible?
Do you like the feel of vanilla, with its perks or is it not enough for you / you think it's broken?
Do you like level scaling or you get rid of it?
I've spent some time trying different mods and just can't decide what to do. Maybe I should dump everything and go with a "clean" game
Tell me what YOU like and why

I use now only.. 5 mods. Not counting the cosmetic mods, I use 6 of those.

Nice additions, with "small tweaks" being done myself.

The unofficial patches, A matter of time, Take Notes, SkyUI, my own mod to reduce respawn time, is all I need to enjoy this game. Anything else I want, I can make myself and there isn't much I want to do outside of 3D modeling.

On earlier playthroughs I had already used mods that addressed many issues I had with the game, as time passed though, I stopped having a need for them.

Vanilla perks are fine as is, and the vanilla feel is ok too, I certainly don't get bored of Skyrim's landscape.

Games i've enjoyed the most have been a very enhanced vanilla experience with immersion mods and combat/Ai enhancments, my favorite combo thus far has been "Duel - Combat Realism" paired with Combat Evolved, great stuff!

Vanilla perks and spells might not be the greatest but it's easy to get alot of mods working together when not using an overhaul. I usedto use SkyRe a long time ago but there were too many scripts and incompatabileties though giving PerkusMaximus a go now and while the perks are awsome it seems abit unbalanced atm.

I also have a game of Requiem that i play and i enjoy it alot, but despite it's name i find it impossible to acually roleplay with. Beacuse it's so difficult at first i feel pressed to make choices based on what i need to win rather than what my character would do. It is a fun game though.

And honestly i quite like the level scaling in this game, sure some ares could have a higher minimum level but i enjoy beeing able to explore freely. Mods that add them in are fine but i prefer not having them in mostly, it just breakes up the gameplay for me, since the game and it's radiant quests are designed to send you all over the place i don't always like suddently hitting a wall. Requiem is the exeption to this since the enemies are logically challenging and i can prepare better.

Whenever I try to fix small things about the game I tend to add tons of mods for everything and then thinking if everything is all right and plays together well. On the other hand when I have requiem I'm mostly happy with the changes but there are some things that I don't like, or sometimes I feel that since it changes so much, it just "doesn't feel right". Like it's no longer skyrim.
Lately I ended up spending more time on selecting mods and thinking wether I like them or not, than actually playing the game - it's ridiculous. I guess restartitis is not the only disease connected with skyrim :P
I wish I knew how to make mods so I could do everything the way I feel it should be.

I usually do not use that many mods since I am on a laptop and also quite often when you are starting to use a lot of mods it starts not to feel right to me.

most often I do have SkyUI and Skyaway to bring back the vanilla look. I need SkyUI due to MCM since quite often I do use Frostfall and Wet&Cold and quite often a lock picking overhaul mod and a mod that needs to eat, drink and sleep. I also like to cloaks o skyrim and winter is coming as well. The last mod I usually like Climates of Tamerial especially the winter edition.

small tweaks to keep it fresh, mostly immersive creatures/immersive armors. I also mostly just play questmods anymore, i've just played too much vanilla to enjoy it anymore.

I have no problem with the vanilla perks/leveling, infact i think it a huge improvement from past elderscrolls games.

I just don't like mods. Not only for Skyrim but almost every game I play. They just ruin the game, IMHO. I used play some games with mods, but don't bother with them anymore.

I use both. I tend to tailor my mod lists to the character I'm playing.

I'm mostly pretty happy with how Skyrim plays. Unlike Oblivion (which is literally unplayable for me without mods) I could play Skyrim vanilla, if I had to. I'm mainly interested in adding new items and adding a bit more complexity to gameplay.

Generally speaking, I use small tweak mods in about 70% of my games and SkyRe in the other 30%.

Depends on my mood and the save I'm playing.

Right now I'm focusing on big overhauls. I'll eventually go back to saves with small tweaks, but right now I'm playing with a combination of Requiem with CWO or Sands of Time.

I have been running SkyRe for a while, now. I want my game to be as complex as possible. Be that, character development, enemy AI or whatever. I feel we are presented with a very opportunistic set of tools by the developers and I try to utilize that gift, both from the developers and the mod authors ( developers ) to it's fullest extent.

I'm mostly in agreement here. The mods I use are pretty much just cosmetic and mostly in line with the vanilla experience. Once in a great while I'll install something odd just for [censored] and giggles, but it usually gets uninstalled soon after I finish messing around with it.

I have ACE-Combat Skills, Empowered Magic, and path of shadows for perk overhauls. Use better deadly bandits for bandits, and deadly dragons for dragons, ETC. I also use mods that add stuff to the game, such as Sands of Time for random ecounters, immersive armors and weapons for equipment, also quest mods.

I usually prefer to use mods that address specific issues or needs, rather than overhauls. Since my main interest in these games is in character creation, my mod choices are usually things that enhance that, like Live Another Life, and some mods that affect character creation and add back "classes."

I use SkyUI. I use Arthmoor's mods that make NPCs run and hide when dragons and vampires attack, rather than having the whole population killed off. I use a mod that gets rid of killcams, because I dislike them.

I have to say both.

However I usually only use overhauls if the game mechanics are a wreck or I just want to try something different.

Mostly I prefer small tweaks, additions and fixes to actual issues. While I use a ton of mods in Skyrim, none of them drastically changes gameplay, etc. They're there to spice things up.
