Overrated/Underrated games of 2010

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:45 pm

If my mate didn't tell me I was playing Black Ops, I would have thought I was playing #Generic COD lol. They all look the same to me.

It is recycled crap after each title. Activision is only capable of doing this in modern times.

I don't see what the big interest or appeal is of a Call of Duty title.

So yes, Black Ops is overrated in my view. As for underrated, Freelancer gets my vote.

So, I've been playing it for a while and must say I think Final Fantasy XIII is underrated.

Another one sees the light! :celebration:

Overrated
Mass Effect 2 - Yes, I enjoyed the game a lot, but I think people went a bit overboard with heaping praise on it. It was a nice refinement of ME1, but I still think there is room for plenty of improvement.

Yes. This.
People seem to think it's one of the greatest "rpgs" when it is not even an rpg compared to the first. Yes it's a good third person shooter with a fantastic story but nothing more.

Yes, It seemed pretty Meh to me. The story was short, the gunplay was good, but the leveling system made your character a master in all skills but 1 (which would still be halfway leveled up)

Thank you. I was watching the interactive achievement awards today and when it won rpg of the year every fiber of me just screamed out "It's not really even an rpg". At least there New Vegas got a mention, from Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk none the less. In his defense at least, from both his comments on the game, and thier response after recieving the award, I think there was a part of him that believed New Vegas deserved the award.

Ok so RPG fans are upset it beat their picks, and shooter fans would be pissed if it beat their picks. You just can't win with some people....

Well, 60% of the people who buy it are tacticool 12-year olds, 35% are the people who stake their social status on their K/D ratio, and the remaining 5% are the ones who buy it to make fun of those people.

I have not played any COD game since the second one, so I can't judge the new ones.

But one thing I can say for certain about each COD's campaign (and from what I've scene on the newer titles) is that they pack it with lots of action and adrenaline. And I love that.

Before COD 1, there has not been any FPS that brought as much packed action and epic battles on a large scale.

I don't like playing games online other than Left 4 Dead, so when I'll eventually buy the newer COD titles, it'll be for their campaigns. (It's also why I'm waiting until the price drops a lot before buying. :P )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijolI14sXEM pretty much established how to make an arcade war-related FPS for the future games to come. It was a great addition to gaming history and pretty much beat Medal of Honor's way of doing it, which was becoming shallow since Allied Assault.

Call of Duty 1 has some of my favourite gaming moments, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9D7p9jw4Vw being my favourite of course.

It fits my definition of RPG, and even if it didn't, it's still a decent game. Overrated? Yes. But so is ME1, FO3, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, I could go on.

Anyway, I guess I felt Alpha Protocol was underrated, as well as Mount and Blade: Wardband (by reviewers), and STALKER: Call of Pripyat.

Overrated: A lot. But then, my tastes are different and heavily skewed towards RPGs.

COD always is overrated. NV was not as good as it could have been either. Lbp 2 was rated... Fine. Also rdr was overrated. But not a reskin.

RDR Overated? I thought it was a great game, controls can be a bit clunky sometimes, and some mini-quests are difficult to do and fustrating but overall it has deserved all the drooling.

Underrated:
FONV - Biased? Probably.

Overrated:
COD:BO obviously.

For me, Red Dead Redemption. Clunky controls, riding the horse was annoying, same mechanics as GTA. Riding around a desert on a horse wasn't anywhere near as much fun as mowing down pedestrians on the pavement with a sports car.

Holy hit someone else who thinks that, I ave only ever seen one other guy here say that.

I applaud Bioware, at this rate a game will just need to have slightly different cutscenes to classify as an rpg. Ah its great to see an genre ruined.
The game can play out the same but aslong as we can make a character say a slightly different line of dialouge its a ok.

I love how I have seen on gaming forums fanboyism. I like fable, I say its a good rpg, met with "hurr fable isnt an rpg, only action adventure" the same people "ME2 for rpg of the year". lolololol aslong as it has BWs name attatched to it, its an rpg. Any non bioware game that is pretty much the same, is action. Funny how that works.

Overrated: Halo Reach. Game svcked in my opinion.

Underrated: Final Fantasy 13. Game is great. Don't get me started on GAME IS SO LINEAR LOLZ, or OMG WTF AUTOBATTLE PRESS A TO WIN GAME IS SO EASY. If you're winning by only using autobattle, you've never made it to the later chapters that require strategy. Linearity isn't as horrible as people make it out to be. FFX was linear yet people didn't complain nearly as much as they did about FF13.

Granted, XIII was still much more linear than X overall, but I think folks forget just how much freedom they really had with past Final Fantasy titles. Most of the time you had a world map that was inaccessible for the most part until you got your canoe/ship/airship, etc., and even then there was very little to do until at least halfway through the game. Exploration outside of dungeons would rarely yield any kind of incentive whatsoever and you generally just stuck to story-advancing areas anyway. Even in dungeons the "freedom" that everyone craves was usually just a branching hallway that led to either an empty dead end or a chest, with only one true path to your next objective.

Of course if you look at XIII's maps then it is definitely more linear, with rarely any branching paths or deviation from one long hallway that connects to the next. Comparing maps, X's dungeons had you going down twists, turns and corridors to solve puzzles, etc. In the end, the linearity and lack of towns was blown so far out of proportion IMO.

I didn't really buy any games last year that I would consider overrated or underrated. Red Faction Guerrilla was a pretty fun game but you have to get past all the bugs and the Windows Live BS. Alien vs Predator was also fun but also fairly short and lacked some game modes that could have made it much better. In the end I think both got about as much attention as they deserved.

I think 2010 was a pretty slow year for games all around. The big hits were pretty underwhelming from what I hear. I didn't buy them so I can only speculate. Except Mass Effect 2 which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I think they did give RDR GOTY out of pitty for Black Ops dominating the video game scene.

Street Fighter 4 won Fighter of the year in 2009 and Super Street Fighter 4 won fighter of the year for 2010, and they're both exact same games. Just like how Black Ops and MW2 are the exact same games, jsut repolished..

(I checked VGA) Other place did the same, sf4 2009, and ssf4 for 2010.

Then there are the people who realize that the CoD series is one of the greatest video game series ever made. :gun:

Battlefield Bad Company 2-So many people here love it saying its much better than COD.THe campaign was great and by far btter than most COD story lines.Online though its the same forumla as every BF game.Far to slow pace and people seem more intrested in messing around than actually playing.

Its not like i didnt like the game, but i didnt understand the real appeal of it. There was like so little actual content.

Character interaction was great though, so was gameplay.

For me, the two best games of 2010 were Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2. I can't say that they're under-rated as both have received many GOTY awards. I thought Final Fantasy was extremely over-rated. Fallout NV was a tiny bit over-rated and as for Black Ops, well I played half an hour of it at a friend's house and saw it was no different to the other tripe the Call Of Duty franchise churns out every year.
