Overrated/Underrated games of 2010

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:18 pm

Now that the year has come and gone and us gamers can reflect on another 365 days of gaming, what games do you feel spent too much time in the spotlight, or not nearly enough? For me, I felt Red Dead Redemption was FAR overrated. I'm a big fan of Rockstar and their GTA series, so when I picked this one up on launch day, I felt that I made a pretty good decision for myself. While I can't say Red Dead Redemption is a bad game by any means, I certainly don't think it's this game changing title that the media made it out to be. The controls were a bit sticky, I felt the gunplay could have been a little more polished, and as for the "greatest sandbox ever", statements that were thrown around for the game, aside fot the main missions and a handful of sub-missions, most of the little side projects the game gave you to do fell flat to me, and I simply just did not want to do them. As for my pick for most underrated, I have to say Final Fantasy 13  . No, but really, the game I found to be severely underrated, and one I chose to wait on because of reviews was Singularity. While the game didn't really break the moldas far as FPS games go, the gameplay was tight, story was well done, and it did throw a few new things into the mix which is always a plus. Whether it was bad timing with all the top tier shooters released last year, or gamers weary perceptions of Raven after so many so-so games, this worthy title definitely deserved to move more copies than it did. Can't forget about Alan Wake as well, though that did fare a bit better.

Overrated games of 2010
COD Black Ops
Final Fantasy XIII (Good Storyline and awesome characters but the linearness of the game is a major no no in my book)
Red Dead Redemption (I liked the storyline but the gameplay was horrible)

Underrated Games of 2010
Fallout New Vegas
I know there's another one I could add but I can't think of it right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Protocol is underrated. I'd say by a lot.

Aside from occasional problems with the AI, the game is excellent. The storyline and dialogues are very captivating. The gameplay is great, the character creation and the large number of random perks abilities plus the countless choices & consequences make this game an awesome RPG. :D

I totally agree. It was a pretty damn good game if you got past it's couple faults. My only real problem with the game were the lame boss fights. I don't think a single one was designed well.

Can someone please give me an accurate measurement of Final Fantasy XIII? I can't decide on whether I should get it or not with all these conflicting reviews. Some people say it's overrated, some say underrated, some don't say anything, and it's all very confusing.

I haven't played it, but I'll easily say that any Call of Duty game is overrated, so Black Ops gets my vote for being overrated.

Just play 12 if you haven't already. The game ditches a lot of what makes the games good, the open-endedness, until the last 10 hours or so, and they returned to the more traditional style of gameplay akin to the earlier titles in the series, which to me just feels way too dated at this point. Ultimately it all depends on the kind of gamer you are though. I don't recommend it.

Final Fantasy XIII was, in my opinion, not nearly as bad as many made it out to be. It wasn't perfect by any means, and it was't even the greatest Final Fantasy, but still a solid game all around. It was linear, the combat somewhat shallow and the writing could have used some work, but the same can be said for quite a few games I hold in high regard (chief among them is Square's other gem, Kingdom Hearts). I can't dismiss it for those reasons simply because it bears the Final Fantasy name.

That being said, Versus XIII looks much, much better in just about every possible way. It looks to be the Final Fantasy I've been waiting for since X. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiIx9VJWSl8. Nomura might just be the most competent employee at Square right now. Anywho, getting a bit off topic here.

Red Dead Redemption (I liked the storyline but the gameplay was horrible)

While I do enjoy the game, and its one of my favoriete, I do see lots of room for improvement, trains werent used to full potential, also slower than horses, the honour meter had no use or effect on the story, breaking horses was useless when you can whistle for another, bears dont hunt in packs (if your going to make it realistic by having them swipe and insta kill then for the love of god make me fight one at a time, not 5 at once, I am not over exagerating this, 5 of the damn things) money had no real purpose, outfits unlock requirements are stupid e.g by the time I unlock savvy merchant (get to blackwater) I have all the money I would need ever.
But for me the atmosphere was great and thats why I love the game.

Mass effect 2
Black ops

Borderlands
I dont care what other people will say about me saying this, but the game was absoutely terrible. People made it out to be a great game, 1 word to describe borderlands in a nutshell repetative.
Same enemies, same guns, same enemies, and no interaction with npcs beyond getting a quest to either find or kill X, and the only other interactions were killing things. Game was just bad.

I dont actually remember any other games released this year... So yeah thats my ovver rated list.

Under rated...
Havent bought anything that I would consider under rated, though I think people complain too much about NVs bugs, its not that bad.

I didn't play many new games in 2010 and I don't really keep up on what mainstream game critics say because I hardly ever agree with them.

I was disappointed with Final Fantasy XIII. It seems the franchise has finally fallen from grace in its fullest form with that installment. Farewell early FF days.

Over-rated: Starcraft 2.

Under-rated: Can't think of any! Didn't play many games this last year :\

Black Ops should have taken it. Sure, it would be corny if COD takes it every year, but if the game deserves it, the game deserves it. Don't throw around awards to be fair and nice, throw them around to games that deserve it. As for GOTY, Black Ops > Red Dead

Yeah a re skin totally deserves it, because selling the same [censored] with a new coat of paint is something the industry needs. [censored] original ideas.

Overrated:
Mass Effect 2 - while it's true that it's generally a vast improvement over the original, there are too many flaws, it's not horrible, just not that good as many people/article/top 10 claimed it to be
Amnesia: The Dark Descent - the game mechanics, the scripted events/monsters, just overall not scary enough

Underrated:
Alpha Protocol - it's buggy and unbalanced, but looking beyond that, it's very fun, and I love the conversation system
Modern Warfare 2 - is it a 2010 game? If it is... it's just a repeat of Modern Warfare 1, just don't feel anything from playing it. This game is the reason I didn't get Black Ops

No black ops is 2010. But its the same (except they copied WaW and added zombies) so I will let you off.

Red Dead was GTA with new skins, horses instead of cars, cowboys and outlaws instead of gangsters and mobs, same game mechanics, same aim cut scene styles, same everything, except a different story, different characters, different place, different looking guns, you get what I'm sayin. What's so original?

Black Ops had a good story, wasnt great, but was good enough. Then there is the multiplayer. Bringing together people from all over the world to play together, competitively and cooperatively. Smooth game, nice controls, good maps, good matchmaking/custom matches. Sure, its the same old ish, guns, running around, shooting, but people are still playing it, online, offline, together, with friends, with random people. That's what makes it a great game. It not getting GOTY is very.. retarted imo.

Thats like saying fallout is oblivion with guns. And stupid so I wont even bother with that part.

RDR had a better story, was great, and an amazing atmosphere too.

Just like every other MP bring everyone together.

RDR controls were fine imo. People play RDR with friends, randoms and offline. Dont see your point.

Hell by your logic MP = GoTY, so you still have loads of candidates, atleast reach brings new things with an upgraded forge, Blops brought nothing new to the table, sam old crap.

Sure alota candidates but not any that come close to Black Ops. RDR diddnt bring anything new except a new GTA with a cowboy scene.

RDR multiplayer has nothing on Black Ops.

And, Fallout 3 was Oblivion with guns. They did it and it worked. It just is what it is. Mabey I'm dumb, I can't see why it got GOTY.

Since were talking about it I just remembered when I was playing RDR, I was disappointed when I could not lasso a cow lol. Talk about bringing something new to the table..
