Oversize swords and plastic looking textures

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:44 pm

One of the thinks i hated about oblivion was the weapons they all looked to big and the textures looked like plastic instead of metal leather wood ETC,from the video clips and some of the screen shots ive seen it would seem that this trend has carried over to skyrim, please say they have sorted this out.

Yes they have sorted this out... they are now all made from Polystyrene

On a serious note, I didn't think they looked that bad

I never found them to be oversized or plastic-looking. I thought they looked fine.

Check out the hammers in Oblivion, then look up what a real one looked like.

This. Maybe some of the earlier screenshots looked like that, but you can see definite progression, from the hunter in the woods to the muscular sword guy in the cave. It is obvious that the graphics have improved since the GI magazine came out, and it is likely that the graphics will continue to improve.

I, personally, think the graphics look just fine.

But it's a fantasy game, not real life.
and they look fine, not big and fantastic like you see in some games.

Oblivion's warhammers were huge I agree, but its fantasy and a video game. I'll let it slide.

I wasn't criticizing, I don't care if they are oversized. Was just helping the OP out with his point. There may have been a few normal sized hammers in Oblivion, but every one I remember seeing would have been unwieldly in real life.

Oversized? you have never seen Cloud's buster sword, have you? now THAT'S oversized.
For the rest... the hammers might be big, but the rest are just right. and besides, I DON'T want historical weapons, it's a FANTASY game. if I want historical accuracy I'll play Assassin's Creed, thank you

I have no issue with Oblivions weapon size. For me as long as they don't go OTT like in Darksiders ("shudder"). I would agree about some of the earlier screens tho, especially the elven mace one which to me did look alittle polystyrene like. But as others have said, since then the other weapons have seemed to improve and to me they look mint as.

I know what you mean... but Oblivion wasn't that bad, at least after you take a peak at dragon age 2.

I thought the weapon sizes were fine. Hell at least the warhammers are two-handers, WoW has weapons that big for one-handers :P

I agree 100% about the plastic textures. Well it's not necessarily the textures as much as it was their use of bump mapping. I noticed it mainly in the caves and stones. Everything was so smooth. I would like some grit and rough texture to the world. But by the looks of some of the stone pillars in the ss's we'll still have that fake water carved texture on some(maybe all) of the stone.

Apart from the outrageous size of the warhammers and axes, I thought they looked fine. I remember a plastic effect in Morrowind if something was enchanted, but never noticed anything like that in Oblivion...

Well as someone has said warhammers most the swords especially the elven sword was massive, and from most the forums and modding sites i went on it seemed it was very much agreed that the game textures in general had a sort of plastic look to them.Yes its fantasy but i would prefer it to have some semblence of realism,i dont want to swing a sword or hammer with one hand that would take three people in real life, just my opinion and last i checked i was aloud to have one ;).

Ps yes i have seen the buster sword and i hate it,i also hate JRPG's much prefer western and D&D style RPG games.

This is a common problem caused by a low-res texture and bump-map.

Nice read, though I suspect several forum members may now being trying to edit out the dismembering parts due to it being unrealistic. ;)

Not sure what your link is for as you haven't given any info for it,if your hinting at big swords ?? in real life then i would say yes they are long and thin, not wide and thick like oblivion swords. But im not saying everyone has to like more realistic looking weapons as someone has said plenty of people love JRPG's with there over the top stuff, just not for me.I dont want spikey hair, motor bike boots, and chocobo racing thanks lol.

The weapons in Oblivion were fine. If they were smaller I would have trouble seeing them and if they were bigger they would be cartoonish. They were just right for a game, imo.
