Overwritten Save Games

Post » Sun Jul 31, 2011 3:14 pm

I've had this problem with Bethesda games ever since I started playing Oblivion quite a few years ago. When I start another character, decide to replay a past character, and then go back to my new character, I forget about the past one. Then I end up saving and overwriting that game.. I've done this countless times and I just lost an Energy Weapons Trooper who I spent 100 hours on... Now sure this can be remedied by numerous saves but thats a ridiculous way to keep a character. I like organization, not searching through twenty saves for a certain character. This is also hindered by the fact that we can't rearrange the saves either. I'm simply asking that Bethesda separate each characters saves similar to Mass Effect and other games like it.

Obsidian Entertainment made the game. Bethesda is the publisher.
I agree, the saves do need to be organized a little better. But I have never overwritten a save because each save has that characters name on it. I always check before I overwrite.

It would be good if they were organised better
Still I just put all the save files for characters on ice in a seperate folder until I go back to that character

Well, I was referring to three separate games. The publisher can always yell at the devs if they need too :)

Fortunately I've never done this with Fallout, but I use the pictures as reference; for example, my main save has my character in first person view with a weapon holstered. My secondary characters have weapons drawn, depending on what I feel is most appropriate for that character (e.g. I might have one wielding a Super Sledge and another a Hunting Rifle)

I was ready for owb scavenged for hours got all snowglobes including the dlc ones designed the lucky 38 just nice with stuff. Then I started my other file and accidentally overwrite the previous one so gone hundreds of hours all side quests gone, loadout gone unique weapons, good reputations with all factions ( except caesars legion ;D) then I started my other file and did owb now I'm trying to get it like my old one, still working on it tough. Btw I loved owb it was really funny

Yes I've done this a few times, I tend to keep group batches to limit it but have still lost a few all the same.
Also tend to delete characters and start fresh every patch, update or dlc as well so it tends not to bug me too much, but all the same it's a tad irritating

I've only overwritten saves when I get bored with that character or if I didn't get enough sleep I would accidently save over my other saves, but that only happend once.

I have done it, but I make two of the same save, plus I like stand the guy on a table or something that catches my eye.

I only ever lost 1 character, and that was in fo3 before I knew if you left a character at an autosave he/she would be overwritten.

I've never had an issue take 2 seconds and pay attention to what your doing. Its not an issue with the save systen its an issue of people doing things without thinking.

Can't say I've done it myself, but this is why I love Dragon Age's save system.

I've never done it.

However is this honestly a problem if you do? The other night in ventrilo one of my friends was walking someone through recovering his old character when he saved over his quicksave, took about 10 minutes and worked like a charm. Not sure if its a supported method from bethesda, but it works and doesn't involve 3rd party software, just playing with the save files.

I technically have, but I didn't lose anything. On Bethesda games I safeguard my characters by making two copies of the last save on an old character. So as they say, no harm, no foul.

I usually back up any character saves that I'm not actively using to a USB drive, just in case.

I always just hit 'new save' whenever I go to save any character. Not only can you completely avoid the risk of an overwrite that way, you also end up with a lot of saves for every character, if you want to go back a ways in time for some reason. Of course, you end up with dozens or even hundreds of saves, for multiple characters, and you have to go out to Windows and manually delete masses of saves later on to clean up and organize your savefiles again- which leads me to 2nd and 3rd the motion for Bethesda to implement a modern savegame management system, like just about every other game in the world already has- cheesh, it ain't rocket science, boys... come on.

I never have, but I'm on PC and make a lot of saves...as well as do the 'copy to separate folders' thing.

They really should have created a new save-area/menu for each character tho, ala KOTOR2.

I never overwrite a save file for fallout any longer, mostly because I find the game runs much smoother if I don't but certainly there are other advantages to having a good list of back up saves. If you delete your saves manually your chances are much lower of accidently wiping out a save you wanted to keep.

Yup. And just overwriting the same savefile over and over... heh... that's asking for it. Can you say, "all your eggs in one basket"? Windows loves crushing yer eggs.
