Oww! That mill hurts a Dutchman's eyes

From a cinematrography-viewpoint they had to spin that way. If they where spinning in the other direction, they would be spinning against the "flow" of the camera, which would be visually less pleasing.

I don't know [censored] about windmills, but now that you've pointed it out, I really hope they fix it. It would spoil my gameplay experience a little bit to see such a thing happening.

You could always blame magic though.

You could, but it's been said that magic is very rare in Skyrim. So why would magic be wasted on making a defective windmill work?

Sorry for being such a devils advocate

Ok So I'm starting up a Team to make a Mod to fix the orientation of the Sails on Windmills in Skyrim, who's in?

 oh god yes, that's what we need...a mod! I'm in. :D

I didn't even notice. I was too busy trying to make out the harbor in the mist off in the distance. However, it is a good thing it's been pointed out. I'm sure it was just one of those simple mistakes that has probably already been fixed.

You know of you tip the blades the other way, it rotates the opposite directions... I'm not so worried about direction of rotation, as I am about the fact there were no sails to cause it to rotate in said direction. That was odd. >.>

apparently the outer edge of the sails are not suppossed to lead.

What if the "holes" are actually angled slits in the face of the wood. And what if they're going in the opposite direction you think they're going in. For example the wind could be pulling the sails if angled outward or angled towards the camera as opposed to away from it like you're all assuming. Regardless, it's a small problem and could be fixed easily if it is actually angled the wrong way. Good catch though if you're right, OP.

i wondered about the "mesh" design. the windmills around here all have solid blades. i didnt notice the rotation thing though........great catch.

:Delete memory:

Good thing I don't know how mills work. Would get me wtffed every time I see those mills in Skyrim.

Wow.

I'm Dutch and I never noticed that, even though there are many windmills where I live and I've watched the trailer more often then I can count.

Shame on me! :P *fails at being Dutch*

Seriously though, if Bethesda finds the time to fix, go for it... otherwise leave it. It's not game breaking and it can be ignored until a modder comes along to change it.

I don't really mind that mistake but I am sure that Bethesda would be happy to change that much for us right

Lol they may not have to be like a 'real life Dutch windmill' but they should obey physics.
The way these things work, the way the wind catches into the sails and pushes the arms round and round, the sails need to be on the other side.

Perhaps physics in the world of Nirn are different?

I can't believe no one has said this yet...

"WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!"

Windmills CAN indeed work that way. If you change a windmills blades so they angle forward into the wind instead of back away from it the wind pushes the blades the other direction.

Yes, but the Windmill in the trailer has blades facing a direction in which it should be going the other way. Do you guys think the top of the mill should be able to rotate in order to catch different directions of wind? And of course, to have it actually work with the wind, instead of just turning all the time?

I don't see what's wrong with it. But I'm an American whose never seen a windmill in action, so I'll take your guys's word for it.

Interesting observation and discussion. I guess this is what it should look like:

THANK YOU
They can indeed function that way, rotating counterclockwise, AND Sails backwards, it all depends on the wind direction, and what the mill is used for, and how much power that use takes.
So its not WRONG, its just DIFFERENT.

No its not the direction the blades face that matters its if they angle OUT or in You could have blades on both sides of the thing it wouldnt matter as long as both are angled right.

In many ways this is like a door made backwards.. It will drive people hokerrs because they feel its wrong to hang the door the other way.

I think I just saw the same thing in Dragon Age in Lothering there was a mill with backwards sails.

if you exclude magic, everything suggests the physical laws are the same

i highly doubt this one is a magical windmill that has a sole purpose to defy wind

it doesnt make any sense, even in a fantasy realm, to have a windmill that doesnt use wind

...especially on a game engine with dynamic wind.
