OXM information

Post » Wed Oct 27, 2010 8:20 am

Here's the basic run-down of information in the article (I don't know if GI have already covered some of these):

  • Two dozen towns
  • Five major cities
  • A Dragon Shout that can slow down time
  • A Dragon shout that can blasts stuff in front of you backwards
  • Can Block and attack at the same time *
  • Can use magic and weapons at the same time *
  • Telekinesis returns
  • Axe can have a 'deep cut perk'
  • Maces can have a perk that ignores enemies armour
  • Can lay traps using runes
  • One perk can quieten footsteps
  • Dynamic snow
  • No classes
  • All old races return (no news ones)
  • No more agility ('to build up)(?)
  • Perks are more practical than Fallout
  • Variety in the terrain
  • Markarth is one of the cities
  • Riverwood is a town
  • Each dungeon is different
  • More puzzles and traps in dungeons
  • Dragon attacks are random
  • Conversations don't zoom in on a person's face
  • Real time conversations
  • NPCs have proper jobs
  • You can cook, chop wood, run a saw mill
  • Each settlement has it's own economy
  • People can give you stuff you drop in a town back (if you want it) or they might steal it
  • Kill a character and their friend/family member will avenge them.
  • If you choose to kill a character that gives you a quest, (e.g. to get an item from a dungeon), you can still complete the quest by giving the item you collected to their friend or family member.
  • Random quests
  • Random quests will send you to locations you've not been before
  • Dark Brotherhood
  • Every item can be inspected in 3D
  • Not all wild creature are hostile (some may just pass you, other may attack)
  • Level scaling is like Fallout 3 style
  • Dragon tear up the landscape when attacking
  • Dogs (there is a picture of a guard in Riverhold with what looks likes a dog)
  • Judging by the front cover, Pauldrons are back
  • Staffs can be used as a light source

Is any of this new, or have GI covered all of this?
*Don't know if these two are true, they have stated they've not tried out the combat yet.

Kill a character associated with a quest, and you can complete the quest by talking to a family friend or another family member

As far as this one, I find it weird how if I kill someone their family would offer the same quest to me. It seems like they probably wouldn't want anything to do with me. But I was thinking that this would also come in handy if someone else kills the quest giver, like if a bandit follows you into town and the NPC tries to fight and dies. It will be interesting to see how they figure it out when the player kills the NPC though.

Edit: Family avengers and Family quests... seems to suggest that theres a regional bounty system where if theres no witnesses... Otherwise it seems like it would just be a paradox.

Jeez I didnt know about a lot of this. Realtime Convos? Like omg.

yeah me too, well hopefully OP mistyped copy/pasting the text from the point above, and all in all meant if a quest giving NPC dies, another can step in.

The things that stood out to me was:

"Can Block and attack at the same time" - Nice! Even more feeling of flow to the combat!
"Not all wild creature are hostile" - Awesome. I hated how every rat, wolf, and mudcrab were after me like I had to be terminated no matter what in Oblivion.
"Dragon tear up the landscape when attacking" - I haven't heard of this before. Seems like... DESTRUCTIVE ENVIRONMENTS! ;)

I didn't know you could block and attack at the same time.

That's about all that is new i guess. I've heard about all the other stuff. I had guessed this would be the case with dragons too so not really "new" but nice to hear confirmed.

That was mentioned in another magazine too. It said that when dragons land they'd create a furrow. It didn't say whether it was a temporary graphic anomaly like a mound of dirt and a scar overlaid on top of the existing ground texture, or if it was an actual gouge in the ground that would be there forever.

Do you remember what magazine it was from and what it said exactly. So i can add this info to the Dragon thread.

Apparently, it was the same magazine (OXM-UK). Here is the quote from the other thread:

They said if you make one angry,it will swoop down, circle you,and every so often crash to the ground, tearing a furrow in the ground ( like a tractor does, when plowing a field ).

As I understand the quest giver will often become your companion during the quest, they might get killed during it and you can complete it by talking to somebody related.

No, they meant if you murder them then the new radiant story feature called "Inheritance" kicks in and a family member of that person gains control of the shop. Now if the person knows that you murdered their family member, they may or may not give you the quest. If it's a particularly dangerous quest, they may send you to do it in hopes that you will die, that sort of thing.

I think they would have mention that more clearly, but it would be cool if it was

Would be cooler if it was difficult to destroy said terrain and it would 'grow' back after a time.

As far of the dragons tearing up landscapes (or city walls), it might be dynamic destructive environments or scripted illusions of said environment. I think the attacks on cities will be in the scripted illusions area (kinda like Dagon destroying the chapel dome in Oblivion), but I would love to see dynamic landscapes where a dragon's talons will create big furrows in the ground. :)

Apparently, it was the same magazine (OXM-UK). Here is the quote from the other thread:

Why would a dragon want to plow a field when angry ?
Why would he want to crash land ? Why not banging his head on the nearest mountain trying to create an avalanche ?
This is at lest weird.

The attack while blocking must only be a reference to the fact that if you hold block long enought you do a shield bash like move.... Nothing like defending with shield while attacking with weapon in the other hand.
Or it would be weirdt to attack and defend at the same time with 2 handed weapons.

As for someone else take the quest in of the quest giver dies i hope they think it smartly and only for certain quests. It would be lame to kill averyquest giver to loot it and then complete the same quest giving an object for example that wouldn t interest the family.
What would you think it would happen under the circunstances below:
- Here, you father is dead but i brought the sword he wanted...

1) Ho thank you, i m a mage i don t have a use for it. But take this money and the sword, and never mind you let my father die, come back whenever you wish...
Or
2) What ! You let my father dies ? Shove your sword up bastard i m a mage!!! what would i do with this metal piece..Plow a field ? Get lost!

I'm optimistic that they've got some form of dynamic destruction. They've talked about burning down lumber mills and dragons terrorizing towns. Would be cool to see a dragon come down and tear apart a city Red Faction Geurrilla style.

These are all new, I think.
I wonder what "can block and attack at the same time mean? Kind of like a brutish bash with both the shield and weapon at the same time?
