OXM UK - New Info & Screens

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:28 pm

Where are people getting this crazy idea that combat skills are gone?

There will be just as many combat skills as there are magic and stealth skills, and FYI there will be magic and stealth perks as well as combat perks.

Combat has not been relegated to "perks only". This is a totally irrational fear, and just plain delusional considering that we know there will be 18 skills and that each of them will fit into one of three groups of constellations in the sky (the soceror, warrior and thief).

There have been changes to the combat skills (blade and blunt now = one-handed and two-handed, armorer now = smithing, etc.), but they are no less represented than the magic and thief skill sets.

The best info from this is the 100% confirmation that the entire world was hand made, not randomly generated like much of Oblivion.

Um, are you blind..? The first thing I saw when I looked at that screenshot are the shadows. And it's an early build more than likely. You think the game is done? You're calling the game bad 1 year before release? Get real kid.

[*]The Snow. Has been a lot of confusion about this. OXM UK says that snowfall is dynamic. Instead of a texture with a bit of white added, landscapes realistically get dusted with snow landing in appropiate nooks and crannies.

I still don't understand this concept. Does this mean every snow flake is a distinct particle with physical characteristics and it 'lands' realistically on the ground? Or by 'dynamic' they mean texture 1 is fading into texture 2 (thicker) fading into texture 3 and so on...

Nine months. I agree with everything you said but that's not make the wait even longer.

Their aim is to make every weapon feel different and they achieve that by giving each weapon type perks that give a different kind of bonus. It gives you much more freedom to design the character you want.

The more I read, the more intrigued I am. If it does end up similar to the way New Vegas handled perks for weapons, I think I'll be all right with that. At the very least, I'm going to follow the proverbial "wait and see" approach. :)

Hmm, another magazine that reports 120 dungeons, what happened to the previous ~140? :(

Multiple sources with the same info isn't necessarily an indication of truth. They quite often copy each other.

Regarding dragon shouts... I expect you learn them by finding the runes, and then can improve their effectiveness by absorbing dragons souls. So increase the damage/magnitude/duration, or decrease the cool-down time, by killing dragons.

TW2 svcks ass, all graphics and a mishmash rubbish assassins creed clone wannabe "rpg". I use my copy as a coaster

I think you`ll find that screen is on the console version and it is actually great for an aging console.

Great info.

@ The whine about perks: I'd rather have 1 perk per level than 1 perk per 25th skill point. The perks were the only thing you wanted in Oblivion, and the fact that you only got one per 25th skill level was excruciating.
Now we can define our character with a fun perk every level instead of grinding our skills.

I guess yeah, it's textures changing gradually, it can't be real accumulation the hardware can't handle that big.

Every object in the game has a normal map. It uses the normal map to see what surfaces "point up". The areas that point up will obviously gather snow. The areas that don't won't. That's why it's "dynamic", but it's a simple 2D pixel shader. They intend this to mean "the artists didn't create the snow on these surfaces by hand" but the artists DID create the normal maps. Edit: An additional reason it's probably dynamic is the strength of the dusting. And probably the higher the strength the more of the surface it covers.

They even use the word "dusting" which essentially means "no volume". So I wouldn't expect any more than a 2D effect to be "dynamic".

I would like some hand-made snow mesh trickery like in Lost Planet 2 or Uncharted 2, though... It was good at making the snow seem deep where you were walking.

  • 120 Dungeons and they claim that 'no two areas will be alike'.
  • Just to re-confirm this fact straight from Todd Howard. Oblivion had 1 dungeon designer with artists doing the rest. Skyrim has 8 dungeon designers.
  • Whole world is hand-crafted. Oblivion had some generated landscapes and there is NONE of that anymore used in Skyrim.
  • The Shivering isles expansion inspired the team that unique, hand-crafted cities, where no two buildings look the same, was the way to go.

Oh thank Trinimac, we'll have a wonderful world to explore and a fantastic atmosphere again. :celebration:
