Pacifism?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 12:44 pm

Would you like it if Bethesda made it possible for your character to complete every single mission you can in the game without killing anyone yourself?

I mean you could still beat up and bludgeon enemies to the point of unconsciousness or sit back and watch your allies or other enemies kill the enemy so long as you do not actually kill them yourself. Not sure if this was possible in previous Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, but with games like Deus Ex, Dishonored and Thief giving you this option I think it would be pretty great to have it be possible in Fallout 4.

Hopefully... FO:NV allows for that approach though, and I think bringing back that capability in FO4 is a wise choice, as being a pacifist is an exciting and interesting challenge in this place where everyone shoots at everybody they see -w-

If it did happen I would love Fallout 4 forever and ever, but I'm not counting on it.

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to sneak, pickpocket, and talk your way out of situations. I'm also pretty sure you weren't actually required to kill anybody to complete 3 and Broken Steel (letting the people in Tranquility Lane die was a mercy, not violence). Are you counting robots, wild animals or AIs when you talk about not killing anybody?

Honestly, I think bringing along your goons to beat up and kill everyone in your way sort of defeats the purpose of being a pacifist.

And if you're not going to go true pacifist, I don't see the point.

Wild animals count.

As for robots and AIs, hmm good question. how about disabling them like you could with some robots in previous games?

Pacifism? Sounds like commie talk to me! :D

Do Super mutants count? I'm pretty sure there was no choice about clearing them out of the Jefferson Memorial to advance the main quest in FO3.

Maybe I should've made the title "No kill play through" instead...

Mods if you would be so kind :D

Well...

If Person A hires Person B to kill Person C.

Many times Person A does not see the connection between themselves and Person C and will blame Person B for Person C's death.

Basically, Person A gets to keep their cake and eat it too (unless Person B gets ticked off and then Persona A may find themselves in a shallow grave right next to Person C's).

Well it be even more awesome if we OR our companions/allies could get away with not hurting or killing anyone through speech, stealth or some other means, but frankly that's just asking wayyy too much from Bethesda.

Allowing for a Pacifist character playthrough would be cool I guess. They spent a lot of time highlighting the merits of their new and improved shooting mechanics and what not at E3 so I am not confident that a Pacifist character is going to be possible. Somebody somewhere is probably going to have to die in order for the story to progress. It is possible, I suppose, for a companion to kill people. Or maybe you could sneak everywhere and avoid confrontation altogether if possible and maybe that will be enough.

It would be nice if they took the sneaky/non-violent builds into consideration when designing quests but I wouldn't be too surprised if they didn't.

That is not what you stated in your original post. According to what you wrote, you want to a playthrough that will allow your goons/allies/companions to do all the killing for you. That or you want to beat them to a bloody pulp, but leave them breathing so you didn't technically kill them. I'm sorry, but there is nothing pacifist about that.

A true pacifist playthrough would be if you could avoid combat entirely. While that may work in a game like Dishonored, in which that is actually a fun challenge, I don't see how it would work in a game like Fallout given the raiders and wild animals that roam the wasteland.

What I stated was basically a no-kill play through. Forget that I ever mentioned pacifism if you are going to argue about semantics. Were it not for Arkane Studios and Eidos Montreal constantly throwing that term around, I probably wouldn't have used it either.

Also in Dishonored you pretty much have to at the very least; choke, shoot sleep darts or knock out someone in order to progress at all which are hardly pacifistic actions either.

For people, at least (including mutants and ghouls), there could be a non-lethal KO.

Maybe tranq rounds that have a delayed effect but knock out rather than kill, or restraints that can be put on an enemy that has very low health.

So... are you suggesting that mutants and ghouls don't count for a non-kill playthrough?

Honestly, those sorts of things would make a game like Fallout 4 too easy. You shoot them with once, twice, or maybe a few times depending and they go down. You loot them and move on. Unless it takes more shots than a typical bullet, there wouldn't be much point to actually using bullets since it would be easier to just put everything to sleep.

It works in a game like Dishonored because you are moving around within a set level with set objectives. You can never carry more than 10 darts at a time. While you have a chance to refill before every mission, that type of ammo tends to be rare within the missions themselves. That means you have to use them sparingly. You simply cannot run around darting everything. That forces you to rely much more heavily on stealth and chokeholds, usually falling back on the darts if something goes wrong. I really don't see this working at all in an open world game like Fallout 4 because people have the potential opportunity to amass hundreds of them and use them much more liberally.

I was implying the opposite about mutants and ghouls.

And the idea I was talking about had non-lethal options be more difficult than lethal ones.

Yes, this would be fun! Hopefully if not part of the vanilla game perhaps someone will develop a mod for expanded stealth gameplay.
