Pageant's

Post » Fri Nov 19, 2010 9:48 am

I don't really like them at all.....of course that's probably because when my little sister enters one her and my mom go on a dramatic meltdown for the next two months about dresses and outfits and what her talent is going to be and blah blah blah blah blah.

Last night me and my dad had to go watch my sister in the Miss Gainesville Outstanding Teen pageant....It lasted 5 hours.....5 HOURS!!! So yeah, I get up and go to the work in the morning, work my ass off all day, have to rush home and get a shower then drive 45 minutes to get to the pageant and then sit in a chair for 5 hours. Not a very good day.

Maybe the fact that their salary is greater than doctors, professors, scientists... and oh yeah the President of the United States.

What a studio decides to pay Tom Cruise to star in a terrible movie is in no way related to any of the professions you listed. Fact is they can afford to pay actors and actresses such large sums due to the nature of the industry itself. Would I like for doctors, scientists and teachers to make more money for playing vital roles in our every day life? Of course. Unfortunately hospitals and schools aren't nearly as profitable as the entertainment industry, so they can't.

I still don't see how that reflects poorly on our culture, unless we're going to start criticizing the public for going to the movies, buying a game, etc.

A person's income is not based on how important or challenging their job is, but simply how replacable they are.

Your neighbour Mary might not be too fussed if it's Doctor Watson or Doctor Magillicuddy that lances her boil; but she might only watch Blade Trinity because Ryan Reynolds is shirtless for most of it.

Garner a big enough market of people that want to see Ryan Reynolds shirtless and every movie studio will want to pay him millions. Doctors Watson and Magillicuddy can easily be replaced however, despite doing a far more important job.

I still don't see how that reflects poorly on our culture, unless we're going to start criticizing the public for going to the movies, buying a game, etc.

Mainly just the fact that people who bust their ass getting an education, and doing extremely important/difficult jobs get beaten by some shmuck who happens to impress someone and get famous. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shia_LaBeouf)

Everyone is entitled to entertainment, but we definitely have an overflow of bad entertainment that makes tons of money, because our standards have become so low.

It's obviously not something that's going to change, but that doesn't mean I agree with it.

Ummm...no. I hardly have enough time to play all the games I want to play. Let alone watching beauty pageants. :unsure2:

Never watched one in it's entirety. Just a little too superficial and banol for my entertainment needs.

This sums up my view on the televised beauty pageants:

Intelligence should be a requirement, it'll help with the whole 'role model' aspect.

Unfortunately hospitals and schools aren't nearly as profitable as the entertainment industry, so they can't.

Only because the entertainment industry gets HUGE tax breaks and tax credits from the government. It isn't that they are inherently profitable, it's that even if they make a flop movie, they still "win" with minimum loss.

Like Nami88 said, there's a lot of people busting their asses to get an education, and Snooki is the one who rakes in millions. Or basketball players who only graduated with a high school diploma.

As for pageants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hibyAJOSW8U

*edit* My opnion is too honest, and I am afraid I may upset some feelings, so I guess it's better not to tell the truth.

I think there's something wrong with a culture that pays celebrities/entertainers to play "make believe" more than they pay real scientists and hard workers who improve society. I think it is utterly despicable the attention those people garner and the utter fixation on superficiality and materialism. Hollywood and big media live in la-la land; the dangerous part is that they have enough money that they have political clout for their self-serving agendas.

It's called entertainment.
Not everything has to be about hard work and improving society. In a way, entertainers improve happiness and that improves society. But, yeah, entertainers get paid WAY too much. But you gotta remember, without this entertainment and stuff, we would all be zombies.
But I totally agree with the last sentence, I mean, I see the cover of my mom's "People" magazine, and 1 page pretty much sums up the entire history and future of the dramas of hollywood.

I have a 4 year old daughter, and wouldn't let her compete in them now. However, if she wanted to compete in them when she got older I wouldn't have a problem with it. My wife wants to put her in some, but I don't think its right to take a little girl and dress them like a 20 year old woman.

I will agree that those little kids pageants were they dress the kids up like little floozies are just wrong. Those parents going crazy trying to live out their fantasies through their children is sick.

I don't agree with child pageantry. I think its quite awful that 5 year olds are made up and wear tiny dresses to make them look like advlts. They often sing sixy songs that are far beyond their years and most times don't know what the words mean. They dance in often ridiculously advlt routines and most of the ones I've seen make them look like miniature strippers to be quite frank.

When you see a middle aged, overweight mother on the sidelines chanting them on, it just depresses me. I'm sure the kid often feels happy at being made up and having people dote on them, but there are other, more healthy ways to achieve this IMHO. I would imagine most mothers push their kids into this because they're trying to live vicariously through them.

advlt pageantry I have no issue with. If an advlt woman wants to put themselves forward for that, they're old enough and wise enough to have come to that decision maturely. If you're happy to have your body be your career, more power to you.

yeah i agree........watched parts of that toddlers and tiaras sp? show and noticed that the mothers tend to be pretty fugly.......even the ones that claimed to be former pageanteers themselves. those parents are just creepy. if anyone remembers the lecherous/pedophile pageant announcer from the movie "little miss sunshine", that is how i think of people involved in those things.

dont have any issues with the advlt pageants although they are pretty boring.

The poll is flawed, I should have been able to vote no and move on.
Therefore, I did not vote.

I have better things to do than watch beauty contests.
The plural of pagent is pagents.
Poor apostrophe, sadly misused. It's for parts of speech known as contractions, and showing possesion.

I have a student that participates in beauty pagents, she is a pretty well adjusted child, considering.
Her parents have pretty much managed her winnings judiciously, she's going to be well set financially, and have no trouble paying for college at all.

OP, may I ask if you play games either made by Bethesda Game Studios or at least published by Bethesda Softworks?

Your asking me? I play Oblivion every damn day. Surprisingly I'm a video game junkie

Weird, I always thought it was 'pageants'.

I can see pageants working in that sense, to save your kid money for school. I'd only do it if my daughter wanted to, though, and I'd make sure she didn't go her whole life thinking she'll get paid for her looks.

But meh, it's not all that surprising for girls to play games anymore. Games are reaching a wider audience every day. But the world goes through different periods. First you had girls bragging about playing football and trying to get on the team, then you had girls bragging about skateboarding or surfing, then girls playing guitar, and now it's games.
