Not really. Especially not the role model part.

Just more making girls think they have to be a size 0 with huge boobs in order to be attractive. No mention of brains, either.

I don't agree with child pageantry. I think its quite awful that 5 year olds are made up and wear tiny dresses to make them look like advlts. They often sing sixy songs that are far beyond their years and most times don't know what the words mean. They dance in often ridiculously advlt routines and most of the ones I've seen make them look like miniature strippers to be quite frank.

When you see a middle aged, overweight mother on the sidelines chanting them on, it just depresses me. I'm sure the kid often feels happy at being made up and having people dote on them, but there are other, more healthy ways to achieve this IMHO. I would imagine most mothers push their kids into this because they're trying to live vicariously through them.

advlt pageantry I have no issue with. If an advlt woman wants to put themselves forward for that, they're old enough and wise enough to have come to that decision maturely. If you're happy to have your body be your career, more power to you.

I agree with Emz. That said, I don't really encounter pageants all that often, AFAIK they're more of an American thing

This is bizzare.

I checked to see if there was an official Miss America forum so I could ask if they liked open-world RPGs, but there isn't one. :(

I do not agree with children pageantry either. About 90% of the children grow up to be monsters!! And so so so much more I could say about children, and glitz pageants. That's why I love competing in pageant's that let the over weight, and actuall inteligent girls win.

This sums up my view on the televised beauty pageants:
“Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children."

Intelligence should be a requirement, it'll help with the whole 'role model' aspect.

In the second question, you forgot an option for "I don't watch pageants."

@LEGOGOD: Hit the nail on the head right there!

I think there's something wrong with a culture that pays celebrities/entertainers to play "make believe" more than they pay real scientists and hard workers who improve society. I think it is utterly despicable the attention those people garner and the utter fixation on superficiality and materialism. Hollywood and big media live in la-la land; the dangerous part is that they have enough money that they have political clout for their self-serving agendas.

They're really boring and I could never be bothered competing in them when I'd get those scam scouts approaching me in malls. That was when I was 13, 5'7", and 95lbs. Now that I'm actually normal sized, they've suddenly stopped. Most people don't really need a judge to tell them they're an interesting person who is easy on the eyes...

And no, no beauty pageant winners are really "role models" except for how you can make money off of sponsorship for competitions with arbitrary standards.

This. Besides it's an american thing which I'm not...LEGOGOD's post is also quite representative. Seriously how can a fifth of a nation not locate itself in a world map?!

Pageants don't appeal to me personally, though I don't have a problem with them, except with children. I'm a bit more of a tomboy and would rather play sports or shoot guns than participate in a pageant, or even watch them. Same thing with modeling. I've been told I should give it a try, but I'm more of a private type of person, and prefer not to be the focus of other peoples attention.

I do know people that have done that type of thing and have a lot of fun with it. I also know it is a lot of hard work and I have a high level of respect for someone willing to put forth the effort.

As far as them being a role model..... occupation has nothing to do with it. I will choose my role models based on their actions and beliefs.

How can so many people not know how to properly speak and write in their own language?

(That is meant to be less grammar cop than it reads and is not intended to be a jab at you or anyone in particular. Just a comparison of general intelligence.)

They have child pageants ? Thats [censored] up.

I dont care about them, I dont see the point either becuase the idea of what is attractive id an oppinion, making the idea of judging peoples looks pointless.

I dont care about them, dont watch any, dont know anyone who competes or watches them.

Role models, isnt it basically all about how they look ? No dont view whoever she is as a good role model mainly becuase I assume they arent exactly productive.

Never really got the point, cared, or watched one. I even less understand the idea of them being a "role model", or losing the crown for "not living up to its standards" or whatever. I've never heard of a pageant winner being required to actually DO anything, or for that matter, ever even being spoken of again after the competition unless they do something scandalous. It doesn't seem that there's really anything to emulate or look up to or fail at, etc. Aside from relative indifference, from an outside perspective it seems like a group of creepy judges rewarding someone for being the most attractive to them out of a group, which...doesn't seem like the best thing to encourage, for either side.

Child pageants are in all ways http://speakingkorea.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/LittleMissSunshinePageant.jpg. Yes, I know the screenshot is from a movie, but the girls (except the one in the middle) were all actual pageant contestants who looked and performed the same way in real life.

C'mon now. The entertainment industry pulls in ridiculous amounts of money, thus celebrities are paid big to play "make believe." There may very well be something wrong with our culture, but I fail to see how what Hollywood pays its actors reflects that in any way.

Maybe the fact that their salary is greater than doctors, professors, scientists... and oh yeah the President of the United States.
