He's like big brother to me. Saved me quite a bit.

He has a big... armor, so you can just hide behind him since he blocks most of the attacks.

He's the strongest one out of the companions, too bad he's tied to the faction, I would have loved to side with the Institute and still keep him. I'm sure there's a mod for it, but it just wouldn't be canon.

Plus, his comments throughout the game are pretty hilarious, and he's pretty easy to please as long as you're a do-gooder. Strong's approval is all over the place.

Hm... Have you tried doing his quest? I think you can keep him at the end of it. It's part of the BoS storyline but at the same time you can still be allied with the institute.

You can't keep him if you destroy the BoS, he would stop talking to you and you can only open up the trade menu. He wouldn't attack you but he doesn't talk to you either. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or intended.

If you bring him on Lost Patrol, it can basically count as his quest since you can't finish the quest without talking to him if you bring him along, and he says a lot of stuffs if you bring him along.
