Papyrus feedback

Post » Fri Sep 13, 2013 1:00 am

Hi, I'm back and I have commentary. Now the good stuff about Skyrim is pretty evident. Its highly moddable, has a good story, well implemented combat and so forth so do not take this as a "skyrim svcks" thread, because it doesn't svck. Its a great game.

Now for some critique on what I feel needs improvement.

Papyrus.

This...thing...is just bad, it seemingly can't handle many scripts and it can't handle them in a timely fashion.

For example, when comparing Skyrim's papyrus to other games which rely on heavy, heavy scripting (such as Warcraft 3, another highly moddable game that can use some crazy intense C++ {or as they call it Vjass} scripting) it just can't compete, often times leading to delayed script execution, CTDs and so forth.

Now again, this isn't me hating on Beth. I love Beth, I love that they support the modding community and I love that they even let some mods which they could legally shut down slide (don't ask because I won't tell).

They are by far the best Dev out there in terms of supporting their customers which is why I'm thinking maybe, just maybe this will get read by someone who matters.

Now just giving negative feedback is never good so what I suggest for a fix is maybe in a patch later down the road a update to papyrus so it can handle more scripts in a more timely fashion could be implemented.

Thanks for reading and have a good day.

They could easily tie it into DLC instead and there's tons of room for DLC content to be added in Skyrim, thus creating a monetary incentive to help out the modders as most of us will end up buying the new DLC just so we can have scripts work better, let alone the usually good DLC content Beth releases.

They announced a while back they were done with DLC. Patches they said were possible, but I don't believe any were released, and I doubt any more are coming past the Legendary one. Which was quite legendary indeed.

That's unfortunate but not entirely unexpected. Well hopefully the next gen consoles will force Beth to update the engine (instead of tweaking it) since pretty much everything is going to be 64x...with a new engine comes improvements on script handling.

I'm actually a bit surprised they got this much mileage out of the current engine, tweaks took them from Morrowind to Skyrim (not sure if TESO will be using the same engine or not), which is impressive.

I hope they just get a new engine.

The goal of Papyrus as of Skyrim is not precision and performance, it's more about stability and user-friendliness. Papyrus is capable of doing many things at once: it is a multithreading language. It is true that Papyrus can exhibit some delay, that's just the way Papyrus works.

The previous scripting language is capable of absolute precision precisely because they're not multithreaded.

I do hope that they improve Papyrus, especially on the performance front, in the future
