Parkour!

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:26 pm

I love games like brink and mirrors edge, where they give you alot of control over where and how you can move, rather than just having invisible walls and barriers here and there.
I'm fairly big into parkour as well, and as I had just finished making a parkour video for youtube, it made me wonder if anyone else here does parkour?
If so I'd love to see anything you've made with your skill.

If you'd like to check out said video of mine, you can see it at http://youtu.be/JYy3tNmJ8EE

any fan films or anything like that I should be on the lookout for?

I've jumped on, over and off things before, nothing to the level of parkour though.

I caught a bit of the Parkour championships thing on Mtv awhile back, its crazy stuff. I could probably do everything until they get to the flips and stuff.

I'm a really big fan of parkour, but I'm nowhere near as good as the guys they show on Youtube videos and stuff. I can get from point A to point B pretty fast, but it'll be clumsy as hell. :P

I parkoured every single day for two years ago, a few years. Made some videos, took some pictures- none of which I have anymore.

Climbing things was my stongest part so to say, I could find paths up that no one would think of and had to climb it first to show the others where to place their feet and hands.

One step wall climbing was something I was fairly good at, not as good as my friend though, he even learned the double step wall run.

Basic vaults, in addition to monkey vaults were no problem at all. Vaulting over a tables long side where my feet get under the hands and then pushed over it was one of the last things I learned.

But as I grew older I realized it's a bit too dangerous in the end, one of my friends even broke his arm once.

I can walk with my hands.

And balance on my head.

I've never gave it a shot but I'm a decent jumper and climber. Not sure how well I could do with those fancy grabs and moves though. I can jump your usual fences, tables and such fine. But getting on roofs and doing those flips, I've never really tried or would want to.

Oh, I fail every time I even try those. Like when trying to land on staircase banister or something... :shakehead:

My "specialty" would probably be scaling things. I could climb up and over walls and stuff pretty easily. I could also land from pretty much any survivable height, but I don't think there's any skill involved in that besides the roll at the end, which is just practice based. Vaulting is tough too, I usually trip. :P

Please note that parkour is not about doing backflips. It's entirely different :)

Precision jumps are easy to perform but hard to master.

as for vaulting... well the key there is just to go for it without hesitation. Hesitating in Parkour is what gets people injured

Let's not get into the whole Parkour vs Freerunning thing...

the technical definition of Parkour is to get from point A to point B using the fastest route possible, and the definition of freerunning is freedom of movement, basically try to move freely and in a graceful manner...

however I believe that the term Parkour can be used for both since freerunning was created from Parkour, by traceurs who didn't like the competitive nature of the original Parkour.

Let's not get into the whole Parkour vs Freerunning thing again... it never ends well. mmkay?

It's pretty much the same as the whole road cycling vs mountain biking thing, no one gives a crap, you've just created a conflict between people with the same base interests for no reason...

yeah... the only thing road cycling and mountain biking have in common is the bikes. That's like comparing parkour to jogging and saying that it's basically the same since you are running in both.

I used to do stuff like this all the time. It started off as a joke, I thought is was hilarious to hop a fence at a point that was 2 feet from the open gate. I got pretty good at it and could do it in one smooth movement. For shorter (3-4 foot) brick walls I discovered that I could run straight at them and put my left foot on the wall to propel my self upward, followed quickly by my right foot for that little bit extra and then my left foot could be planted firmly planted on the top of the wall and then I was standing on the wall. For higher walls I would do a similar movement but just get high enough to get my hands on top and pull my self up, it also worked on buildings. For chain link I thought it was the coolest feeling to actually grab the links near the top on the other side and kick myself over, that is my body would be on one side at the top of the fence and I would grab hold of the other side so the top of the fence touched my forearms and then my body would follow and extend and hit the fence, it was like landing in a net. I also used to like to navigate across playground equipment without touching the ground, by climbing on top and leaping from the slide to the monkey bars and from there to the swing set and the like. It came in handy when someone would throw the frisbee on the roof, once I was walking home from school and a couple of kids were sad because their ball was on the roof and then I was the hero for jumping up on their wall then to the roof to get it for them.

So I went a lot of places by climbing and jumping and balancing across the tops of walls because it was much faster than taking the prescribed paths, but I never had a name for it. I quit doing it almost 20 years ago.

I like the idea of parkour but I'd probably die of a heart attack if I tried it, what with all the smoking and eating junk food. Think I'll leave it to you guys, Ezio, Altair and Faith. :P

Great stuff. :goodjob:

I haven't had a camera for years and train alone, so I've got nothing to share, but 95% of my time is still conditioning anyway (and not parkour-exclusive).

The best movement I've seen is Teg's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7ECPoCwDZA
Mostly because he just moves fluidly and powerfully over obstacles, rather than muddling the strength and joy of it with fashion, unsafely-landed acrobatics and vague philosophy. He doesn't take it too seriously either.

I admire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDkcEGb3DxI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QSegpGxucM movements a lot as well.

I have a question about this some of you might be able to answer.

I only do really basic stuff, so I'm no pro but, should I powder my hands before a run? Because if they get sweaty, it's really hard to do stuff. Or should I wear gloves? Again, really new to this, I don't run with a crew or anything.

Thanks in advance!
