Past games live lenght

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:18 am

So I want to ask you guys, how comfortable is playing past TES games? I have dilemma - to play Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire and Redguard or to just read their storylines on ImperialLibrary and proceed to play Morrowind. So I want to know are these games fun to play and such. I am so hyped for Daggerfall, Arena, Battlespire and Redguard. When I hear its music, watch screens, read introductions on ImperialLibrary I am excited to play this but I realise that these games are just old and not playable today. Thanx in advance for answer.

They're all fun... Arenas free, theres demos for Daggerfall (get Betony) and Redguard. Why not play them and see?

I enjoyed Arena (7 staffpieces right now), Daggerfall (finished mainquest), Battlespire (played it through twice), so yes, get them if you can!

They're all great games in their own way, especially Daggerfall "The GTA 3 of its time" do anything you want go anywhere you want. This was mind blowing stuff for a game back in 1996.

Another annoying thing about past games is that DOSbox is so annoying to use. I mean - I played Arena for like 2 weeks but this was just pure suffering. On DOSbox no matter what cycles value I choose, this will never be fully playable. Animation (especially in towns) is lacking in frames. I do not know is there any other emulator or any other way than just having computer with Win98 or so to play comfortably. So I am in dead point. If I will not find good way to play Arena and rest of past games, I will be forced to read storylines unfortunately. This is not that bad at all but I will not "feel" whole atmosphere and this satisfaction of defeating Jagar Tharn. :) I am reading Real Barenziah right now and I am at the end almost so this is good introduction to Arena actually (I have read introduction for Arena from its manual as well) so I am hyped to play it. :)

It's all about configurating dosbox, at first playing Arena was near impossible because it was really slow. Later on I found some nice configuration hints and from then on, it ran smoothly.

Even if you can read the story, you're missing a lot of game history.

Arena not so much, but Daggerfall is truly revolutionary - you could do more in that game than you can in Morrowind or Oblivion. Don't just look into the games for their story. TES is not a game series that revolves around the story and beating the game, it's much more. It's about experiencing the vast and rich world, and doing whatever you wish.

Since I'm in this boat too (haven't played Arena for years- now coming back to it) have any specific advice?

Yeah - I know there is a lot more than story and I love it. I do not play TES for main quest, I like to role-play in this world. But I thought that Arena and Daggerfall are not that nice today cuz of annoying things like random dungeons but I will still give it try.

This would be great if someone could post specific advice on how to configure DOS-Box to play Arena comfortably.
