All right, so I played the first 15 hours or so of the game pretty well; just minor bugs - a miracle, considering it took me months to get Fallout 3 running without crashing within a couple hours. Finally, half an hour after installing the patch, I got my first crash: a freeze (whereupon I also discovered the save-eating bug - lost about two hours). 45 minutes later, another freeze - this one right before I started to drown, if that matters. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was having freezing trouble after installing the patch? They couldn't have tested the thing much, and since they won't tell us what it actually does I'm even more skeptical, so it seems a likely culprit. I'll update if the crashing continues at this rate.
