If you are using the vanilla launcher, when you launch Skyrim, click on the Data Files and check for HighResTexturePack03.esp. Move it up to the top of your load order just below Pack01 and Pack02.

So many devs in this thread. Thanks for the textures, guys! The game really needs them. It's good to get rid of those awful purple logs too

MY GOD. How can I stop steam from downloading this CRAP. 1.5 GB wasted for something I'll never use.

Can someone help me? I want the game to be able to update when a new patch comes out but NOT download extra things? Why is this forced upon us?

At some point I believe you clicked http://store.steampowered.com/app/202485/ on this steam store page and downloaded the High Res Texture pack DLC, no?

Not entirely sure, but I don't think it's possible to "unsubscribe" from DLC on Steam once you have downloaded it. However, you can certainly deactivate the .esp file in your load order if you prefer the lower res textures.

You can go http://store.steampowered.com/app/202485/ to get the High Res Texture DLC, if you don't have it yet.

I just clicked on the Skyrim desktop icon, steam pops up and starts downloading. Never gave consent to download these things. I don't even have dragonborn. I find it extremely frustrating and I can't even download patches without it downloading texture packs, for DLC I don't have, in the future. Can't even play skyrim till the my slow internet downloads it all. I'll get over it but I really needed to vent because it's a bit stupid.

This update is not just for Dragonborn, it affects textures for the main game and the other DLC. You should have only gotten this update if you previously downloaded the High Res Texture Pack DLC from Steam.

It's not an automatic update, only for people who already downloaded the free High Res Texture Pack DLC. As for whether you need this DLC or not, it improves the appearance of textures, and it doesn't result in too much performance cost, but if you have a very low end PC, you might want to stick with the regular textures.

From the sound of it, if you previously downloaded the HD texture packs (which were offered early last year as a free DLC), you'll get this update. If you didn't, you shouldn't get the update. You also shouldn't get it if you turn off automatic updates in Steam.

As to whether you need it or not, that depends. If you're satisfied with the way the game looks with the base textures, then you don't need it.

It improves the main textures? Okay that makes this forced download a bit less intrusive. Thank you.

Here is a list jonwd7 put together showing changes to some of the main game textures: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9491126/DIFF.html
