Patches Patches Patches

According to the article : http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=124 - patch 1.1.511 must be installed to have the correct loader launcher - not true with the 1.2.0416 version (!) but indeed needed with the 1.2.0416 SI version.
If one installs vanilla -> SI (1.2.0.201) -> SI 1.2.0.416 patch : oblivion launcher && Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa stay the same (v1)
if one installs vanilla -> 1.2.0.416 patch (non SI) : oblivion launcher && Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa change !!
What I did was install vanilla (0.1.0.228 original) - backed up with mTES4 - install 1.2.0.416 patch (non SI) - compared with vanilla - backed up with mTES4 - restored vanilla (0.1.0.228 original) - installed SI - install 1.2.0.416 patch (SI) - backed up with mTES4 - compared with vanilla - compared with 1.2.0.416 patch (non SI) - restored vanilla (0.1.0.228 original) - installed 1.1.511 - backed up with mTES4 - installed SI - install 1.2.0.416 patch (SI) - compared with vanilla - compared with 1.2.0416 non SI

http://s1032.photobucket.com/albums/a406/dardanov/OBLIVION%20PATCHES%20COMPARISONS/

I believe vanilla -> 1.1.511 -> SI (1.2.0.201) -> SI 1.2.0.416 is the way to go - not sure if the textures.bsa/launcher update is needed and why it was not included in SI - will open them up and see
Notice launcher size stays the same but CRC changes
shaderpackage001.sdp never changes - shows in differences due to date changed but CRC same

WRYE BASH - grab 1.1.511 esm -http://s1032.photobucket.com/albums/a406/dardanov/OBLIVION%20PATCHES%20COMPARISONS/?action=view¤t=120416nonSIvs11511showALL.jpg (http://s1032.photobucket.com/albums/a406/dardanov/OBLIVION%20PATCHES%20COMPARISONS/?action=view¤t=120416nonSIvs11511.jpg) - so you are good to go for a dual boot SI/1.1 (1.2.0416 non SI actually) setup !!!

That article is from 2008.

Who doesn't have GOTY or at least some variation of the final patch bundled with the game anyway?

Did you check the comparisons ?
I do not have GOTY - and I do not want any patch bundled - I want to be able to use WB dual boot feature and I need to be 100% certain of what I am doing. SI 1.2.0416 patch does not patch textures/loader launcher - does anybody know why ?
Check my points please.

Ok I give up - what you are trying to do is unclear to me - I'm guessing you want to have one install that is as up to date as possibel without SI and another with SI.

And it seems your stating that the launcher (or loader- you seem to use both terms) and the textures BSA is not the same between versions. (nor is the esm for that matter).

Not sure I can be of help, but you know about mTES4 Manager and that seems more viable for switching between than Bash. just my 2 cents.

Hey - ok :)
WB has a super nifty feature for esm swapping
Launcher - loader is the OBSE variety :D
Yes it is changed in 1.2.0416 non SI patch but not in the 1.2.0416 SI one ?!?
the textures I will unpack and post back - no OBMM still
esm has to be different - the patches are for the exe mainly - esm changes between SI and non SI versions not between non SI versions
mTES4 is very nice - but I'd rather have it occupy less space - I start appreciating the possibility of virtual profiles in bash - I really do - Gaticus are you heeere ? :D

Seems to me like utumno want to know why if someone install Oblivion patches in different sequences the result will be different and the changes might not effect some of the contents. Honestly, I never knew or noticed that.

But I agree with Psymon, a more "orderly" explanation will be cool. ;)

Never known that.. I believed 0.1.0.228 + SI + SI 1.2.0.416 was fine.

So with my setup, what am I missing beside the launcher? (I don't care about it since I'm suing OBSE Launcher instead)

The textures bsa patch - not sure how important this is - and the esm swapping tool of Wrye Bash (if you are a modder)
You are just fine I guess

EDIT : check the screenshots I posted
and BTW I started this cause I want to be 100% sure about my install when/if I need to do some OBSE/WB etc testing - for players should not be much of an issue

I'd love to get this clarified as well :) Up until recently I've never owned SI. I always had my game patched to 1.2.0.416. Then I got SI and installed it. It installed fine but I wasn't able to install the SI patch - it complained about the version or something. I just gave up and didn't bother. Everything seems to be running fine, but SI does have a lot of bad meshes and a lot of other small glitches. I don't care because I don't like SI and don't really plan to play it (I only bought it to support Oblivion XP - dedication eh?).

Anyway, I'd also like to know the correct installation order...

Edit: Also in my case, my version of SI is brand new. It's just the expansion, not GOTY or anything. So I'm not sure what version it is... Could it be patched to 1.2.0.416 SI already?

run obse_loader.exe -crconly from the command line and look the crc up in google (or the source code)
I bet it will be c1.2.0416 cause the exe is not touched during SI install - so since you patched it before SI it will stay patched.
Later OBSE would not run with older SI

EDIT: this crappy site I posted the jpgs has not an option for displaying the gallery in details view - so it is noit easy viewing it - any alternative more user friendly site ?

Hmmm, yeah, as near as I can tell I'm running 1.2.0.416. That link on Nexus looks pretty good - I'm surprised it was done back in 2008 because it mentions Win 7 - was Win 7 available in 2008? Anyway he mentions my situation specifically and I might be fine, but I probably don't have the launcher fixes.

I would go with LHammonds suggestion and the path you posted originally (original --> 1.1.511 etc).

One thing I know for sure is that if you update Oblivion to 1.2.0.416 +and then+ install SI, you won't be able to properly update SI to 1.2.0.416..

Right way is install SI and then patch it with "SI 1.2.0.416".. And now it seems that before that you have to also update Oblivion with the 1.1.511 patch..

Lol all this months of intense study and I still lack on the fundamentals! :P

Anyway, thanks Utumno for pointing out and I'm wondering what missing textures may bring.. :)

Me, for one, I bought the game within a week of the original release date back in 2006. Bought KOTN (with the other DLCs) on separate disc. Bought SI separate. Bought Battlehorn Castle separate. Never saw the need to go out and get a GOTY disc since I have all the parts already.

Ok, so Oblivion.esm remains the same?

I've started cleaning mods with Tes4Edit, I'm wondering if mods'references are checked against the "right" esm as per authors'intentions..
Even if I wonder how many players/modders have installed Oblivion properly, with 1.1.511 before the rest.

The Changes to Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa are not particularly important.

The Female Upperbody testure that caused all that controversy was removed by the 1.1 patch but left alone by the 1.2

As for the Launcher, who uses that anyway?

Great - so this texture was the difference - did not yet find time to check it - so one is better off with the 1.2/1.0 versions of the texture.bsa. Nobody cares about the loader - just a procedure to update to SI 1.2 but keeping the non SI esm for WB dual setup feature
@Jedi21ita - yes 1.2(non SI) and 1.1 esms are the same

The BSA patch that you guys are referring to, which is not included with GOTY editions, actually changes the version of the meshes. We stumbled upon this when testing Deadly Reflex 6 which uses NifSE with the throwing weapon feature. NifSE makes the weapon look appropriate when stuck in the NPC. http://yfrog.com/2fdaggerinhead1p The meshes in the GOTY edition are v20.0.0.4 while the manually patched version are 20.0.0.5. Why is this of importance you might ask? Well outside of causing crashes when used with NifSE when trying to delete the scabbard I'm not sure. If you want more details you can read the DR 6 thread but it boils down to the following.

--v20.0.0.4 Meshes have the flags set to 16 in both the main NiNode section and the NiNode block that contains the scabbard. Possibly other differences, I didn't thoroughly compare the different versions.
--v20.0.0.5 Meshes have the flags set to 14 in the respective areas as mentioned previously.

http://yfrog.com/j2ninodemainp and http://yfrog.com/69ninodechildp shows the two different areas that have the flags changed. It was only necessary to change the scabbard NiNode section to 14 to prevent the crashes. Well it wasn't actually 14 specifically, it was turning bit 4 on that prevented the crashes with NifSE. Any time bit 4 was off, regardless of the others, Runtime errors occurred.

At first glance this may seem like a minor difference but changing the decimal number from 16 to 14 actually changes quite a few things in the binary counterpart. Here is a quote about what bit 4 is...
Apparently bit 4 is the "IsSkinInfluence" boolean, i.e. whether or not the NiNode is being used by any skins (I don't actually know what a skin is), except that "on" means it's not and "off" means it is

14 Works with NifSE when deleting the child, no Runtime errors.
0b0000000000001110	14

16 Fails with NifSE when deleting the child, Runtime errors, CTD.
0b0000000000010000	16

What overall effect this has on the meshes outside of not cooperating with NifSE? Hell, I don't know.

Chmm - this means that the 1.1 patch should be applied after all (or the 1.2 non SI) NifSE wise. I still have to unpack those and look for binary differences :sigh:

Edit : chmm^2 - I was refering to the textures bsa - no nifs in there - where were you reffering to ? please clarify

Anyone knowing which is the best version to keep (including options on SI and non SI 1.2.0.416 setups - I mean which nifs refer to which textures)

OK from this tread I understand next order of install:

1. vanilla v 1.0.228
2. Patch v 1.1.511
3. SI ... and game became v 1.2.0201
4. and final patch 1.2.0416, but here I have a question witch version of 1.2.0416 patch: SI or notSI ??? (because notSI 1.2.416 version have BSA patch but SI version of 1.2.0416 don't have)

P.S. sorry for my basic english

Thanks for answer Arthmoor :)

OK I have SI ...but my problem is about this BSA patch ??? because in SI patch 1.2.0416 doesn't exist this BSA patch, somehow I feel like a downgrade, because all indications give by Smooth. Even Tomlong seems to preferring notSI patch version http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=installing_oblivion

None of which matters. If you have SI, you need to patch your game with the official SI patch. Using something else is generally not a good idea, even if it ends up working.

So to resume, if you have the GOTY edition, you don't do anything at all (as usual), because this BSA patch does not cause any trouble or fixes anything essential, right? Although here http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=installing_oblivion Tom specified to every user of Oblivion (even the GOTY edition) to get the latest official patch for Oblivion (without SI). Wouldn't it be the same if we extract the update and just overwrite the old BSA with the BSA patch and problem solved? (Assuming you have two installations of Oblivion, or two computers, and you use a clean installation on one computer, put the official oblivion non SI patch and copy the BSA to your game, for those of us who are already playing or have a lot of mods installed)
