no pause inventory?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:49 pm

The poll explains it fairly well I think, but I'll elaborate all the same:

I think it would be interesting to have the game set up so, opening your menu doesn't pause the game. I was thinking that this could apply to your inventory, your map page, and your journal. I think it would add a little more immersion to the game. ie: your character can't stand around reading their journal in the middle of combat or they'll be defenseless and get killed. Or they can't rummage through all their gear and drink 5 potions in the blink of an eye.
Menus like your stats, would pause the game, because your character wouldn't actually be doing anything, ie not reading a journal, or checking a map. Of course there would still be a start button, which pauses.

I personally would like to see opening my menu slow the game down, but not an actual pause. I'm thinking the game slows down to something like 'bullet time' so you have enough time to get 1 potion, maybe 2 without your enemies striking you, but you can't be chugging your whole stock. Or you can switch a weapon and/or arrows without issue, but if you're looking to re-dress your entire character you'll be hit.

For the containers, I would have the game keep going at real time, don't loot if you haven't cleared the room For thieves, if there are lots of items grab them all and sort it later.

For picking locks, it would depend on how it's done in Skyrim. For Oblivion I'd slow the game down some, like maybe it runs at 3/4 speed. Morrowind: full speed. I think that would really make it exciting to be a thief, you have to pick a door and there's a guard patrolling the hall, you better be quick if you want to remain unseen.

Anyway those are my thoughts, what are yours?

PS totally off topic, but i have a Q. in the oblivion spoilers and it's getting no help because everyone is here. thanks http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1151463-quick-question/

I personally like the pauses. I guess I've just become accustomed to it.

I would like to be able to travel with a horse/cart and read a book while the game continues and read a book while I wait for a shop to open.

Ya that'd be cool, sit down in a tavern and read a book watch the npc's come and go. Some longer books would be nice too

Yeah, the game should keep running (also during conversations) but this also means that the default speed-up of the game should be way lower than in Oblivion. Else you'll start reading a ten-page book in the morning and finish it as the sun goes down again, a few minutes real-life time later ...

That is a good point, they should change the time scaling anyway if you ask me.

Hmm, I would say that if you a reading a book then the game switches to a time scale closer to real time, maybe 1:30, so if you take 5 min to read the book, 2.5 game hours went by

I believe everyone knows fear right? well thats the best solution for me, according to the level of the character on lockpicking or stealth in general, the time can slow down accordingly, i dont believe it would be right to freeze, but if he is very capable it would be right to slow down a lot

I kinda like that, maybe something like a perk for becoming master or expert, twice or 3x as long to pick a lock

Oblivion's security perks are fewer tumblers fall when you make a mistake, for a master no tumblers fall.

They should change that in my opinion, lets leave the "traction control" aside and handle thinks ouselves i should say, if you are a master on lockpicking just prove it, but ok slow time is a good element

Pause/Pause/Pause.

Unless things have vastly changed, I do not trust the AI not to spot me picking a lock halfway across town and kill me before I can get out of the minigame.

If the UI is anywhere near as awkward with tabs as Oblivion, I do not want the game to continue while I'm in my inventory or opening chests.

For picking locks on the other hand it would be nice if the game continued, like it was in Morrowind.

I think that would be great to have everything happen in real time without any pauses. But there should be an OPTION to have that that enabled or not at startup. Because there are those who wouldn't want to have that type of feature in their game.

The game keeps going for all 3 sounds good, at the very least they could put that into the hardcoe mode if we get one.

I like the idea of real time lockpicking and the suspense it would create, however, id prefer if containers and inventory paused the game. I would alos like it if the game kept going when talking to npcs rather than all other npcs just freezing in place.

I want real time locpicking, but rather than a full-screen minigame, I just want an easy quick one to appear on the side of the screen so you can look around to see what'scoming.

The game should keep going.. I never understood hwo you could simply engage a lock whilst out of sight and then keep trying to pick it forever without anyone ever seeing you

Inventory - pauses
Locks and chests - no pause....if the UI allows for easy access.
