Payment Model Discussion [merged topics]

Not the sandwich or the sea vessel. I read an interesting opinion http://www.gameinformer.com/blogs/members/b/o_jman240_o_blog/archive/2014/01/30/why-i-couldn-39-t-care-less-about-tes-online.aspx about the subscription model for TESO. I must admit that the idea of an online Elder Scrolls is something I find fascinating, but in all reality, if I was going to go back to paying 15/month for a MMO, I would probably start playing Warcraft again. I've tried my hand at several MMOs over the years. WoW was undoubtedly the best, but I loved GWs a lot too. Aion, Rift, and SWTOR were all meh. I expect TESO to put up a better fight, but I don't really have the time to establish myself in a new MMO and there are a lot of titles I'd rather play. Given the fact that this game has an M rating AND the hoops they apparently had (or have) to jump through to get a subscription based game onto the PSN and XBL services, it makes you wonder if they aren't setting themselves up for disaster.

Thoughts?

One of the unique features this game boasts is three way open world PvP. While I have played previous Elder Scrolls games, it is this feature that really caught my eye. DAOC was the first MMO I played, and the three way PvP system worked much better than the systems present in other MMOs I've played since then.

It seems like the game will be mechanically distinct from WoW and its clones, and much more sandbox. This appeals to a different player base.

Only time will tell.

Just a heads up. Moderators are locking threads talking about the payment model.

So yeah... future reference, don't post topics about Payment model.

I honestly see the purchase price as an far larger roadblock than the sub. If you buy an game and don't like it you have wasted your money.
The same for ESO, if you want to continue to play after an month it start cost money, but you only play a game longer than an month because you like it.
If you get bored you simply stop paying, you can always start the sub again later.

imo the sub was the best choice they have made with this game. its been talked about so many times before on here and each time it gets locked because we are not supposed to talk about it. so yeah........

F2P is a travesty to the MMO community.

The monthly fee weeds out the majority of the trolls, most of which will never spend anything in "cash shops" that the F2P models rely on.

There are good games and bad games. There is no "good enough to F2P, good enough to pay 5 quids a month". For you obviously WoW is the king. Go play it, dont waste your time on this forum.

I can say that It was a sure buy until they put the sub on it.

Same for me. I will still keep an eye on TESO though. I understand it's an MMO and not a singleplayer-game and I usually don't play MMOs. Without the sub I would have bought the game day one nonetheless, but now I will definately wait. Maybe I'll try it out at some point.

I would prefer the PTP model, which is, pay the player, so we get the box for free, then ZOS pays us £9 every month for playing their game, win.

I just hope they go with the active subscription needed to write in the forum model.

ROFL. Funny story: I was part of a study that Blizzard commissioned on why people left WoW. Fifty bucks for a couple of weeks of completing surveys and forum discussions. The folks running the survey kept asking us what it would take to get us back into WoW. My answer was always exactly that: if you paid me to play, I MIGHT consider it.

Don't feel that way about ESO though, since I actually WANT to play it

And... I would probably not have played ESO at all if it were "free", i.e. fully microtransaction-funded. I loathe with a passion any game that asks me to open my wallet in-game... NPCs or game dialogues offering goods for real money. And particularly the ones that do it every few minutes of gameplay.

There is no way on earth a stable f2p model without a ingame cash shop to survive, there just isnt, and that will break the game apart.

Now I do agree that no matter what, the prices asked are outlandish, and too 2005, they need to wake up in the real world and realize the world has changed, and that they would get a lot more people if they would go with lower prices.

The game box alone costs 55€ from what i've seen, with "30 days included", why the hell not 30€ with the 30 days included? They have so little faith on their product that they need to charge before the player even gets to play the game?

12€/month was what was charged back in 200x, now with this economy you would think they would wake up to reality a bit and charge more on the 5-8€ range and the price for the box lowered as well, that is, if they had any faith in their product to begin with....

I don't see why the 1 time pay is not enough, they will still have their cash shop items that will sell good. sub ridiculously high too.

money money money, I sure wont give you all of mine.

Like the article stated, I think a plain sub fee would be enough. But companies nowadays are so eager to recoup their investment before their product hit the market, I doubt they have even considered the idea.

I'm impatient, I'll write it before thread is closed :P

Pay2Play payment model is old and has many disadvantages. It forces me to play at least 2 hours every day and costs much.

And P2P doesn't mean no cash shop. Look at WOW, 90 lvl character to buy. Really funny. Price doesn't mean quality. Compare Morrowind and Skyrim price.

I'll just wait until monthly fee goes away.

The cash shop is still only for fun and account stuff, yes I know you guys are all engrossed in your what if and this might indicate that scenarios...

but your speculations are just that speculations and fear mongering.

The thing I do not understand especially by those people stating that they have no interest whatsoever in the game, why are you still on this forum posting hourly updates of your dislikes? Is your life really that empty that you cant move on, is there nothing else to do you might enjoy?

I am happy about the sub. I left a game that turned F2P, it's a sickness that infects the whole game. Development moves away from inspiration and toward the business dept who would rather focus on developing things that can be sold. The sub pays for a giant wall between the business dept and the developers in my opinion. It also pays for a robust support and development staff to stay in their seats. It gives me enormous comfort and expectations of a good game to see a sub.

Going to the cinema once costs about 20€ (26$) for maybe 3 hours of fun (including talking about the movie afterwards).

15$ for many many hours of fun is good value to me :)

i am the opposite, if it was f2p (which everyone should of known was not going to happen) i would of skipped it. if it was b2p i probably would have played it solo.

I'm not for or against a subscription fee by default, I'll judge the game content and how fun it is, and decide every month whether I'll continue or not. As long as it's fun I think I can afford the sub. But from a business angle I sure hope they make profit, after all I'm hooked by more than one Zenimax franchises and I want them well financed.

+1 to this. Since I also want to see good quality content added after start I want them to keep sub fee for a long, long time. Best would be if it would never go F2P. I really dont see any flaws in sub fee.

This again is the main benefit of a sub their main focus is to keep your playing, with an F2P the main focus is to get you to use as much as possible in the cash shop over your time in the game.

I fully support the subscription model.

F2P games and Hybrids are full of kids, spammers & gold sellers.

I want a game will few annoyances and lots of regular new content and facilities. I want things consistent with the ES lore wherever possible. I feel a Sub is the way forward and if the game goes F2P or hybrid I may have to look for another game.
