pcgames.de just released a bunch of new hi-res screens

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:42 am

No way, the dragon on the perch with the moutains and forest in the backround is sooo good, fantastic distant land.

Then you haven't see some of the other screens from the GI mag then. The distant foggy mountains in one other screen is the most beautiful landscape screen. As for the most amazing looking screen, I still say it is the adventurer in the deep cave with the glowing staff, so amazing.

Nice find there, several of these I haven't seen before, and they all look pretty good, for the most part. I especially like the one with the dragon, though the view in the picture grabs my attention as much as the dragon itself, those are some nice mountains there, much more impressive than the ones in Morrowind or Oblivion, I also like the effect of those clouds that are actually touching the mountains, the other ones are nice too. The main criticisms I can find for the ones that are actually new to me are, aside from the kind of dated look of the hair on that person in the hunting scene which others have already pointed out, marring an otherwise pretty good image, are that the dungeon with those undead looks too bright. Granted, it looks like there's at least one lightsource visible, but even in the areas that shouldn't be recieving much or any light from it, the lighting is still just dim, not even enough to obscure the details on the walls. I hope dungeons in the final game will be darker, or it looks like someone's going to need to make Darker Dungeons for Skyrim as well. Aside from that, though, the dungeon looks pretty good.
And now that we see the hunting scene in digital and higher resolution format, hopefully people will finally stop mistaking the deer for a horse, unless some people think horses have antlers...

The first one (with the Dragon) and the one with the Troll look amazing.

Absolutely cannot wait to see some video.

Edit: And now I have two stars. Sweet. Goodbye Curate I was one too long.

What troll? You mean the one where they character is fighting the troll with a sword in one hand and casting a fire spell? If so, that one has been on the GI website for awhile to see to those without the mag. If your talking about the scruffy looking guy with a giant club, that's not a troll, that's a giant.

The Xbox 360 has resolutions up to 1080i and the PS3 has up to 1080p.

That's not true. They both do 1080p. There ARE true 1080p games, but they're usually very visually simple. Arcade games and things. Some actual shipped games do 1080p but they're also visually simple. Fact-check before you try correcting. Source: http://web.archive.org/web/20080731071201/http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/community/news/systemupdate.htm

With that said, PhYoshi should be glad they're 720p. Most games run at this on the dev kits and then get downscaled before they ship because they couldn't keep a constant 30FPS. A lot of console games are as low as 544p (or some odd number) even though they claim to be HD.

Yes, I was talking about the one with the fire spell. And yes, I know it was on GI's website, doesn't change the fact it looks awesome :D

They're high-res in comparison with the tiny images in magazines, or in magazine scans. Also, what did you expect? The Xbox 360 to suddenly be able to render at 1440p? There are very few (<1%) monitors in the world with a resolution as high as 1440p. Would you consider high-res 1080p? Not sure any (visually complex) Xbox 360 game has ever shipped running at that resolution. Simpler games, maybe.

Anyway, they're the highest res and fidelity they're going to be, until we see 1440p screenshots posted from PC gamers who've bought the game. There isn't any 16:9 game resolution higher, barring those silly multi-display technologies.

I'd live with 1080p, wouldn't mind some 1440p, but I least want 1680x1050 to start calling yourself HD.

@Sleign; While the 360 can /output/ at 1080i, it cannot /render/ at 1080i resolution at any acceptable framerate. Many games are sub-720p in order to shoehorn more effects in.

I hope they release a hi-res shot of the dragon standing on the stairs breathing fire!

That dragon looks... amazing. Stunning. This game looks stunning.

The mountains too! They look so well done. Wow, I am thoroughly impressed.

That screen with the autumn leaves and white trees could bring me to tears... this game is going to blow everything out of the water. I feel sorry for anyone releasing anything else around Skryim and the next year to come. This game looks incredible.

Thanks, those screenshots look amazing. The trees and lighting look absolutely amazing in the picture with the hunter and deer. The tavern and its lighting look amazing as well.

Bravo Bethesda.

Edit: Oh, and the dragon as well - spectacular.

Are those teeth in that chandelier? (tavern screenshot)
Maybe horns?

Love the use of shadows in that screenshot with the archer

Everything is awesome (esp that dragon), but... That archer guy on the hunting screenie. He looks like crap. His hair is plastic, and... am I the only one who sees that his sleeve has angles? And cloth textures are low-res...

But don't think I don't like it, the forest and other screens are spectacular (that broken three and birches look like real )

1. ... am I the only one who sees that his sleeve has angles?
2. And cloth textures are low-res...

1. Prime example of what tessellation could bring us (on PC). *crosses fingers*
2. Prime example of what texture packs will do for us (on PC). And supposedly higher-res textures by default on PC.

Edit: Also, I'm not positive but I think his "hair" is actually a hood. But it still looks particularly bad.
Edit2: Eh, can't tell either way. It appears to have highlights like hair, but the way it keeps such a rigid shape looks like a hood. Either way it's bad.

Yep, i put my hope in tesselation too, but I'm afraid we don't get it. Anyways, PC ftw

I think it's a hood as well. Don't know for sure though.

Eh, like I said in my 2nd edit, now I'm not sure either way. The full-size image appears to have hair-like highlights and striations. In either case that "bend" in the mesh is pretty bad.

There are some really good looking pictures here. The dragon screenshot was amazing, and the forest in the hunter picture looked really nice. I especially liked the broken tree. The inn also looks very, very nice, and the NPCs look great. Other screenshots looks good as well.
The game looks very promising, though I'm a bit worried about the interface and the graphics possibilities for the PC.

Not much bad to say about this really. The hunter's hair looked weird, and some of the textures could have had higher resolution.
I'll hope they fix the hair, and ship the PC version with higher resolution textures, and hopefully some tesselation or possibilities to mod it in (DX11).

I think it's hair, look at the GI screens again, there is a screen with a guy with a dark hood on ,stabbing someone.
And that looks way different, than what you see in the woods screen.
Just my view.
