A "Peace" mod so my 5 year old can play too.

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 1:41 am

Bah! I didn't have any educational games growing up. I actually developed an affinity for reading and writing based almost entirely on my playing of games, because we didn't have voice overs; we had to friggin' read the story, solve complex riddles, or solve complicated puzzles with absolutely no hints or the internet to help.

Same with me.

tcai should be sufficient, if all she does is explore then turning off combat is going to be sufficient.
My dad used to play everquest and all i did was run around the iksar starting zones and explore - never did any quests and only combat involved lvl 1 mobs - even at lvl 17. If all she's doing is exploring that's all she's going to do.

If your still worried about combat enchant or find a weapon of paralysis or use console to give yourself mass paralysis spell. When she plays set tgm on then explain to her how to use the weapon/spell and then to run away.

Why should she be limited to killing angry mushrooms, angry birds, angry sea-horses, alien globs, bees, and collecting stars?

At 5, I was crushing bugs, blending lego-guys, melting G.I.Joe with an iron, getting shocked with screw-drivers pushed into wall-sockets, and being beat by my father to learn...

Seriously... You think the kid is going to run out and buy a sword, and go postal on the other kids at nap-time in the day-care or something? OMG, it is columbine all over again, in kindergarten!

I am sure she realizes it is a game, and that bad people exist in the world, and you "dont sword good guys..."

Thanks for all the replies. I will look at the list of modders and talk with a few of them about it.

Well we have a Wii and she has a Leapster. She has plenty of games for them but none of them come even close to the graghics of this game on my PC at ultra settings + mods that make this game look amazing. ;)

As I said, she just doesn't have to play and quite frankly until I can find a mod that does this she probrably won't.

She probably just wants attention mate and wants to do somthing with her dad its probably nothing to do with the graphics. Seriously kids will play with a card board box and some crayons if you sit there with them. Try buying a pack of cards and playing snap with her or building a house of cards she'll love it.

Dude,

5 years old don't play video games...

Just because they might not come up with the best build to fight alduin the world eater from scrath doesn't mean they don't play them.

Hey I understand. My 3-year (almost 4) old daughter loves to watch me walk around the world and she gets so excited every time I let her play with me. She actually sits down next to me and stays quiet (very hard for a 3 year old)! I pick flowers with her, mine some ores, rearrange my house, talk to other NPC's and makeup funny stories about why are they talking to me (she loves when I talk to the little kids) and explore 'Cleared' caves and dungeons. The thing she like the most is going inside the water and she absolutely loves waterfalls, I could spend an half an hour easily just wading in the water around the same place and she just watches in awe. I have several saves just for her where I have cleared all the baddies around areas, like Blackreach (one of her favorite ones because of the shiny mushrooms), that cave with a huge tree or other outside world areas with good vistas. She also likes going riding so much, her favorite horse is Shadowmere and she's always asking me to 'find' my horse and ride him.

Obviously, there are some downsides, like finding a dragon or other scary creature, but what I do is reload another save as soon as I hear/see it in the distance, and tell her we are going 'sleepy' and when we wake up, voila, new place.

For those that think this is 'bad' parenting or that the OP needs to spend more time with her daughter, they don't know what they are talking about. I spend quality time with my daughter doing many other activities but there's just something special about seeing a child's curious and happy look when you are sharing something you are passionate about.

it may be possible through a mod/edited ring enchant to have your character the "aura" of calm which means any mob that comes within x range of you imediately gets hit with a "calm" spell ie nothing will attack you ever, and as long as you don't do the main quest to the dragon spawning point you won;t ahve those scripted ones flying about kiling her either as i dought u can calm a random dragon into not attacking.

op

I saw one guy on these forums talking about how he turned the NPC attacking AI off with the console commands so his child could play.. maybe he could help you? Cant remember his name.. but at least you know it's possible. I also saw one guy saying he did it on utube (to show without the person killing him) damage differences.

Some of us would have loved to play Skyrim at five. There's plenty of non-violent things to do and enjoy in the game. Enjoying the scenery or using a grind stone at a farm. If you find a way to disable the scary aspects of the game, why not it can't be worse than the cartoons and commercials on tv.

I think it could be an interesting mod and probably a simple one that just turns off hostility in NPCs and creatures. My 5 year old son likes to watch me play the game and when he does for his sake I tend to paralyze wolves, horkers, and bears as those are the only things in the game he gets upset over if I kill.

You kill horkers? You monster...

You see everyone does things differently. My wife and I both are gamers and our kids are also. As the kids have grown we have always taught them it is just fake. There is nothing wrong with killing something in a game that is trying to hurt you, its called defending yourself. My daughter used to get mad at me more for killing a deer in Oblivion, then killing a bandit for attacking me. But yeah they could make a non combat mod OP and also to each his or her own... :)

Good Luck OP

I read that post too.
He said his kid had the greatest fun running around and petting sabre tooth tigers, picking flowers, chasing butterflies.

As other people have said, the simplest way to do this seems to turn enemy AI off.
I think its a great idea, and I hope your kid has fun on Skyrim :)

If you're playing on PC you can just open console and type in tcai to turn off all combat.

When I was 5 it was a healthy mashup of terrible scooby doo games and Goldeneye. Skyrim would have blown my mind. (scratch that, it still does)

A five year old has no business playing this game. Give her some math games, or play outside.

Eh, I say type "tcai" in the console and turn her loose on the butterfly-catching, flower-picking, horse-riding fun.

Thanks for all the replies. When I have time after work tonight I will try turning the combat off in the console and that sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

As far as all the debate over whether a 5 year old should play this game or not I thought I covered that in the first post. -_-

I'm 35, have two kids, played video games all my life including the original mortal combat where I was ripping people's heads off with blood dripping from their exposed spine and I turned out fine. (Was an Army MP, got out got a degree in computer programming and now have a career as a 911 dispatcher, big house, wife, yadda yadda yadda...)

However when I was 5 we didn't have games this great looking. Like I said before WE DO PLAY OTHER GAMES and she has fun with them too.

Hey I understand. My 3-year (almost 4) old daughter loves to watch me walk around the world and she gets so excited every time I let her play with me. She actually sits down next to me and stays quiet (very hard for a 3 year old)! Dude you hit the nail on the head. This is exactly why she loves to watch/play. Glad there's someone on here that actually has a child that enjoys the splendors this game has and why no Wii game can match the beauty. :foodndrink:

I don't think Skyrim is suitable for a 5-year-old, killing or no killing. I'm sure there are other games out there that are more suitable to a 5-year-old.
