Pelinal

Post » Sat Oct 16, 2010 6:24 pm

Sorry if this has been brought up before. I did search the Forum for any answers but found none.
First off I believe someone told me once that Pelinal was/is an avatar of Akatosh. Is this true?
Secondly in The Song of Pelinal it says "...was arrayed in armor [from the future time]." and also "...and ate his neck-veins while screaming praise to Reman, a name that no one knew yet." do these mean thta he was from the future of Tamriel?

I'm no Pelinal expert, but I know a little bit:

The Song of Pelinal makes reference to the fact that he had a http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/songofpelinal.shtml#6 under his armor, which proves that he is a myth echo of Lorkhan. Concerning Akatosh, he is also a echo of him; Pelinal himself makes it evident that he has "http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/songofpelinal.shtml#6" with Aka. This said, it is safe to say he is a echo of both Akatosh AND Lorkhan simultaneously: the Enantiomorph in one.

I've seen speculation about Pelinal's armor AND his hand that is http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/songofpelinal.shtml#1 that might suggest that he could indeed be from the future, maybe even an astronaut of some sort; the "killing light" statement has reminded some of a laser, which is, of course, killing light. I'm not too sure people have come to a majority agreement on whether Pelinal is himself from the future or not; it's only noted that his ARMOR is.

Interestingly, the Aurorans have light-based attack spells, and presumably Umaril does too.

Although the idea of a Terminator Pelinal is still pretty awesome.

if he is Akatosh it is entirely possible that he is from the future, or rather that he is the future, being time and all.

I've seen the killing light thing on here more times than I can count. I don't claim to have an explanation that is "canon", but I did think of something just now that I'm not sure if anyone has posted yet about it, so I will. The crusader's relics fortify destruction.

I want you guys to do something for me, ok? Go load up oblivion and cast a spell like flare (everybody starts the game with it, so I know you have that one no matter what). Where did the fireball come from? What part of the body?

Now, that being said, think of all the stories about how mighty Pelinal was and imagine what coulda' come out of that guy's hand. Especially wearing that sweet-ass armor.

If it is commonplace, if it is "only magic", then why would it have been remarked upon? In a world of magic, it's sometimes technology that is the unexplainable stuff.

D'you mind if I sig this?

But the armor in KoTN doesn't look very remarkable compared to, say, a suit of ebony or elven armor. Another discrepency between game mechanics (or poor designer choices) and lore?

it looked remarkable and futuristic back then. you have to remember that full plate and chainmail armor was not available, the nedes armored themselves in hides and decorated themselves with beads and feathers. a man like pelinal was remarkable and futuristic to them.

I see. So Pelinal is an Enantiomorph of both Akatosh and Lorkhan. Thank you for the answers.

True, but you see, the nedic peoples were a slave race of the ayleids, correct? What did the ayleids call fire? Light that burns. Sometimes slave races adopt the terminology of the dominant race. Also, who says that it was commonplace for Nedes? If I were a highly advanced magickal society such as the heartland high elves, I would most definitely not allow my slaves to learn about anything that might level the field. So, possibly a human who could use the light that burns, or in this case light that kills, would be an amazing thing to someone who has not seen such a thing before. Also, as I said, his destruction skill must've been quite impressive. Imagine casting "enemies explode" times ten to the twenty-fourth. A primitive race would be quite amazed with a display of magicka that rivals that of their masters'. I mean, just think about it. And, yes, technically it would be "futuristic". In the present (what would've been the future, then) people shoot deadly killing light from their hands all day, but in the past, maybe not so. I'm just saying, man...

I know it's disappointing for it to turn out to be something as mundane as a high destruction skill, but I entertain that possibility. Sorry.

The Aurorans in Knights of the Nine use shock spells with a light effect. I forgot the spells name.

In the end though, the image of a robot with laser beams from the future and a man without a heart in advanced armor casting destructive spells aren't that different when seen through the eyes of the Nedes.

So it doesn't really matter which one it was because it's the portrayal of Pelinal in relation to everything else that matters. And the robot impression helps to portray how much Pelinal outclassed everything better then merely describing his stat sheet.

Proweler has always spoken the truth, especially when upon the subject of Pelinal Whitestrake.

But let us ponder Pelinal for a moment, shall we? More specifically, let us ponder exactly why Pelinal was/is a robot.

1. Pelinal is a robot. (See http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=758104&st=20&p=10993036&#entry10993036)

2. A robot is, by definition, not human.

3. Pelinal represents the combined Aka/Shor enantiomorph. (See e.g., "http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/songofpelinal.shtml)

4. Shor represents Freedom and "the spirit behind all human undertaking". (See "http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/songofpelinal.shtml#2"; http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/varietiesoffaith.shtml)

5. Akatosh represents "invincibility", "everlasting legitimacy" and immortality. (http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/varietiesoffaith.shtml)

6. Shor-who-is-Lorkhan is a god of the Underworld and therefore represents mortality. (http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/varietiesoffaith.shtml)

CONCLUSION: Pelinal is considered a "robot" because only when Lorkhan splits from Akatosh do we find "humanity" and "the human spirit" appearing on Mundus, and Pelinal, although symbolically still without a Heart, contains an aspect of Aka. This renders Pelinal "inhuman", which could explain his bloodthirst and madness.

I agree, and I'm certainly glad you said that. You and TWM have always been far more eloquent than I. This is exactly what I'm saying. The "robot" thing may not have actually been literal. I doubt very seriously that robots leave spirits which may speak to their successors. However, I can see how the author of those stories would've viewed Pelinal (a human who has so powerful as to rival the masters) as an alien creature, and therefore something other than human. That's what I'm trying to get across. The idea of Pelinal as a laser shooting Terminator just seems a little silly to me. ;)

And, yes, I know MK confirmed it. Someone in the Who is MK thread called him pretentious. I would've called him something else had the thread not have already been locked by the time I saw it. While he may come off as pretentious from time to time, I would not describe him as so. I, however, would describe him as being very facitious a lot of the time. ;)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b1/C3PO.jpg don't exist in Nirn. But what is the difference between a robot and a golem? Or a metal atronarch (if it existed). The gods represent elemental forces, so an avatar really is a mystical robot. Mara's incarnation? Fembot. Pelinal is merely a case where his characteristics suit our vision of a robot as well.

And TWM: You forgot the delicious clincher, where 'Pellani' is the Ayleid word for stranger.

Actually, there's no reason for you to have taken it back. It's true. LOL! I just would've liked to add my 2 cents then, but the thread was closed, so I took the opportunity to say that he also has a very tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and isn't always forthcoming with the fact that he's joking. He can be asked a direct question and will answer with something that either means he's a nut-bar or he's kidding. That's why I said facetious, from the latin facetus which means witty. Webster defines it as joking at inappropriate times. Like when everyone else is being serious. In this case, if you take what we both said and add it together, it means he can be a bit of an egotistical smart-ass from time to time (it's one of his more endearing qualities, in my honest opinion... as a matter of fact I think that's why most of us like him so much, we just sometimes forget the grain of salt we need to be taking while reading anything he says).

Pelinal sounds like both "Pellani", which means outsider, and "Pelin-el", where "-el" is a known suffix (Auri-el, Tamriel) denoting divinity or purity or whatnot.

I think that some more educated former slave gave him the name "Pelin-el", and the less educated slaves butchered it to "Pelinal", and the Ayleids that still didn't get the point that they were on their way out got a chuckle over the fact that it sounds like "Pellani"

TWM: Hubris is the purview of the Lords of Misrule. ;)
