Penbrugh

I recently started playing Daggerfall. I love it, it's really great. I like the exploration, the feeling that I have no idea what can happen and that I'm quite unimportant and weak. I get this feeling much more than I did in Morrowind, even.

Anyway, to the point.

I stopped off at the town of Penbrugh in western Daggerfall and was greeted by a message saying something like this: "No holiday divides the citizens of Penbrugh like the 3rd of Heartfire. Some of the older residents don't speak for the whole day for fear of evil spirits entering their bodies, but most people treat it as a celebration. But even the most lighthearted of the residents make sure they don't go out at night in Penbrugh on the 3rd of Heartfire." I had to explore this. Penbrugh ghosts? I think not!

I booked a room at one of the inns in the town and waited until 10PM. I ventured out into Penbrugh on the 3rd of Heartfire, even though I'd been told not to! What a rebel I am. Anyway, I explored for a few minutes, pressing the 'wait' button repeatedly to see if any enemies were near, found nothing and started finding my way back to the inn. As I neared the inn I pressed the 'wait' button once more. "You cannot rest when enemies are nearby."

I don't mind admitting that I crapped myself and ran around like a madman looking for the inn door.

Might just be one of Daggerfall's hurr messages, but the presence of an enemy in the town makes me doubt that. Is this a quest or something?

Nope. When you see that message, there is definitely an enemy nearby. It would suggest that when you ended your last wait, one spawned nearby somewhere. They can spawn in towns, especially at night.

For your next trick, try Daggerfall City at night, you'll likely find that quite fun if you enjoyed the experience you just had. Not going to say any more if you don't already know. ;)

By the gods, you're a mean person! Who's the guy shouting "VENGEANCE!"?

Also, seems that my little trick in Penbrugh was a Daggerfall hurr message. That holiday happens everywhere and I was unfortunate to have an enemy spawn in the city on that night, thus scaring me a lot.

Unrelated, but I'm only lvl 2 and I can't continue on the MQ until I'm lvl 4 I think. Any suggestions for what I should do to boost these levels/do while I get levels up. I was thinking the fighters guild, but I don't want to be sent to kill a Lich or something.

I suppose the guild that fits your character would be appropriate. Fighters guild missions are alright and they let you sleep at the guild and get cheaper repair, but you might have more fun with a Knightly order. The Knights of the Dragon in Daggerfall send you on bunches of dungeon diving missions, from which you can fill your wagon with loot. They also let you stay at any inn for free, so that'll save on travel costs. If you have any magical talent, I recommend gaining rank as quickly in the mages guild as you can so you can access their magical items.

Quests for temples can take a good bit of time in the gameworld, but they can raise your reputation pretty quick.
