People don't really want sequels..

Post » Thu May 29, 2014 2:14 am

i was just thinking about this while taking a shower...

everytime a sequel to a major title comes out, people always complain because its not exactly like the previous title:

when GTA: Vice City came out people complained it wasn't like GTA3
when San Andreas came out, people complained it was not Vice City..
when GTA4 came out, people complained its not San Andreas..

when KoToR 2 came out, people complained it was not KoToR

when Mass Effect 2 came out, people ciomplained its not ME1
when ME3 came out, people complained its not ME2..

when Oblivion came out, people complained its now Morrowind
when Skyrim came out, people complained it was not Oblivion..

i could provide more examples if you wish, but i believe you can likely see the point...

people complain because a Mechanic is changed, or because the gameplay is not exactly like it predecessor..

funny thing is, these same people give games like CoD a hard time for not changing these same things..

thoughts?

About everything.

Another point is that all of those complainers buy the game, so clearly they do in fact want it. They just want it to match their wants more than it does.

I think it's not that people don't want sequels, but more that they want core game mechanics to stay the same, while improving on the areas that significantly failed in the original game, but all to often game designers see consumers complaints about stuff and instead of fixing what we think is wrong, they go in an entirely different direction and revamp/scrap the original and put a whole new system into place.

To take one of your examples: A lot of people complained about the magic system in Morrowind, mostly that it wasn't powerful enough without extreme bugs being taken advantage of(mixing potions to inrease int, then making more powerful potions to improve int more, and continue doing this, then popping the ultra powerful potions before using spells and blowing everything up. gamesas turns around scraps the entire system and changes it entirely in Oblivion, leaving nothing of the old system behind. Then on top of that they start to entirely gut the skill system because of how they revamped magic(they took levitation because they merged the school it was in into another one and didn't feel it had a place anymore(or at least that's been my understanding of it) and removed skills that people loved.

So, it's not so much that people don't sequels, it's that we want them done the way WE want them done, which is sadly never going to happen ^^

thats the thing though, the fact they are complaining after purchase shows they don't want it..

what they actually want is the same game rehashed

Differing opinions. People want sequels, they just don't want IPs milked to death. Except StarWars fans...

I disagree. Seems like that's all people want is sequels. It's not just video games either, this goes for movies as well. Seems like there are very few, if any good new ideas out there anymore...a lack of creative thinking...rehashing them same [censored] overandoverandoverandover.

Oh, and as far as Oblivion...I seem to remember people complaining it wasn't enough like Morrowind and that it was an abomination to the series and that Morrowind was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Some fans are still saying this, but most of the loudest complaints of it have quieted down.

Now that Skyrim has beenout a couple years, I'm hearing people saying that they changed too much from Oblivion, and now the series is a shell of it's former self. This opinion is not entirely unjustified, just the same as the Morrowind fans weren't entirely unjustified in their Opinions of Ob.

People seem to want sequels still, and that's not always a bad thing, but what is really needed is consistency between one game/movie, and it's successor.

In video games its almost natural, even a must, to have sequels. As long as the sequel is done better than before in terms of quality and content, even if its different, I don't mind. I HATE when developers eliminate elements because of their illusionary excuse that their "way" is better for the fans; elements that were perfectly fine before and the fans enjoyed so much.

So, CoD? Well mostly, we will see what the "new" CoD brings.

I dont know about other people, but i enjoy most sequels, save a few blights, like Fabel III...

I couldn't wait for Skyrim because I loved Oblivion so but I took off my Oblivion rose glasses before I played Skyrim so I wouldn't be another close minded hater of new installments....this has let me love Skyrim more and look forward to TES 6 :tes:

if I like something, I tend to want more of it... and if it gets better and better... that want grows.... but if it gets worse and worse... the want wanes.. Most people just love to complain.

This.

Also, people complain about EVERYTHING. If the human race were to have an overall favorite activity, it would be complaining.

I liked all of the sequels to those games...

I do agree with the motto, "if it ain't broke -- don't fix it."

There are games that depart too far from their roots to the point where no audience wins.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Def_Jam:_Icon, is the first game that comes to mind.

I enjoy sequels to computer games but maybe the motive for making a sequel should be questioned. Why do companies release sequels exactly? The first one was successful so why not just capitalize on the name and release a second one to make some bucks ? I think it should come down to how much game makers care about their product. Make games that you would want to play yourselves and they will probably fun to play for us consumers.

Sometimes we need sequels to finish the story arcs of some franchises. One franchise that seems to have abandoned the idea of finishing the story was Legacy of Kain.

And or Call of Duty "fans", every time a new Call of Duty game is announce people whine, cry, bellyache, gripe and complain. It's almost as if they got PTCoDSD ( Post Traumatic Call of Duty Stress Disorder)--- its almost sad, some will only go so far as to play 5 seconds of a new CoD game before calling it crap, yet they always buy a new CoD game  .

Having played the series from the start through Black Ops 2, there was definitely a downward trend over time. Not enough to go from one to the next and declare it totatlly svcks, but enough to get tired of the series at some point. That point could be different for everyone.

It's because sequels are almost always dumbed down. The Witcher is pretty much one of the only franchises not to fall victim.
