People living in Shivering Isles

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:02 am

I'm not sure if this thread belongs here or in the Lore section. And I'm sorry if this is something that is explained in the storyline of SI (I have just begun playing it). What I'm wondering, is where all the people living in Shivering Isles comes from. They are regular people from Tamriel, aren't they? From what I understand in the game, the "Strange Door" only appeared recently, so how and when did they manage to get that many, and to even create settlements with taverns and shops? In the Oblivion planes, there are no people. Then again, that's a more unfriendly environment. Is there any explanations for this?

This should go in the lore forum. A few are invited by Sheogorath. Others just wandered into portals, I assume, and lost their minds (like the Khajiit outside the door which I'm not going to say any more about here). Who knows? Sheogorath may also be looking for champions in other provinces. Perhaps they are the descendants of an earlier generation, when Sheogorath was looking for a champion at the time of the last Greymarch, or perhaps the one before?

The dead aligned to Sheogorath go there when they die. I imagine a few are born there too.

I think that the portal moves around different provinces so that would explain how they got such a mixture of people as well.

Cyrodiil holds many races, so it didn't have to move in order to collect people.

the world exists at sheogoraths whim as do his followers, i'm guessing that when some one joins his realm they are bound to him
Spoiler
so at the end of the greymarch when he recreates the isles he recreates the people

Besides the fact that I told him first ^_^

I'll go investigate the library to see if I can find anything.

I know, I'm beaten too often these days... I also made sure I didn't say 'You used my advice well'. Kept it open for interpretation ;)

Well, the people in the first village all came, because they couldn't get passed the keeper.

Yeah, I can understand the first village. Although I am wondering what kind of civilization was there before the wooden shacks and houses we see there now? This might just be an overlook from the developers, but why weren't the planes of Oblivion filled with NPCs? At least some adventurers should be there? It was even easier to access than SI, as there were gates all over Cyrodiil and no gatekeeper to keep them away (only daedra).

there are adventurers there, you see them at the beggining attacking the gatekeeper, also the issue is covered when you activate xedilian
and as for oblivion what adventurer would survive accept you

The last bit explains it ;)

Lore-wise, Daedra are much more powerful than they are in-game.

Aurels and Mazken are daedra and like Dremora they come from daedric realms , others(many npcs can tell you that they lived in Tamriel before) was searching for better/new life and probably migrated from Tamriel or other lands and settled in SI.

Daedra can't create, as such. Their realms are extensions of themselves, so I guess in a sense they can 'create' things in it - more like shaping than creating, though.

Which would lead to an interesting question: where did all the creatures come from?

yeah, that combined with chats with the inhabitants of Passwall led me to believe that Lord Sheogorath has a system for readying people to enter into his realm. I'm sure this doesn't mean that he can't create new inhabitants on a whim, but i think he much more enjoys seeing the new unexpected insanities that are produced by people being brought in. Additionally, if events in Crucible are any indication, it seems that the inhabitants of the Isles have a rather high mortality rate, certainly higher than the birth rate (if one existed), which would also indicate that new people are actively being added as time goes on, not a simple full repopulation
Spoiler
following every greymarch
(if mr. Chemist insists on using spoiler tags on this i suppose i won't ruin it, but i hazard to guess that anyone reading the lore forum is already knowledgeable about Sheogorath's life cycle).

I want to know about the crazies from other continents/dead races.

For example, i'm sure Sheogorath has his fair share of Akaviri followers, as well as Sload, Maormer etc. And then there's Yagrum Bagarn. He was on another plane when the Dwemer were wiped out, so i'm guessing Dwemer crazies (although they were already kind of crazy) probably survived too. But they've probably been bred out of existence or simply killed during the last Greymarch or by an angry Gatekeeper. He's probably got a few Falmer (or did) as well.

It's a shame, Shivering Isles would've been a perfect opportunity to introduce a few new non-playable races beyond the Aureal and Mazken.

I'm sure all the Dwemer except one died at the Battle of Red Mountain. Vivec himself couldn't sense them in ANY of the outer realms, and his powers allowed him to travel to Sheogorath's realm at will.

The Dwemer were also atheists. They didn't worship any god, unless you assume Vivec's capital letters mean something...
As for the other races maybe they don't have the same gods
