[REQz] Perfect UV Sphere, no polar pinch (thread 2)

So I've created a thread like this in the past, but it seems it got deleted. The request is simple. A simple sphere mesh with no http://members.iinet.net.au/~multispud22/lahl/tutorials/SphericalMapping/Spherical-1.jpg on it's UV so I can map a night sky texture to it.

I remember the last time I made such a thread it was suggested I morph a grid in blender to a spherical shape, however I couldn't remember or find out how to do this, so this information would be useful.

The idea is to take a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection#Cylindrical texture and map it onto the sphere, which would be used to represent the night sky. Ideally, I'd only require one texture for this, however, if I can't figure out a way to make it seamless at the poles, I'll just create a second texture that has both poles distorted from rectangular to polar, and UV the poles themselves to use this texture.

The resulting textures and mesh couldn't be implemented in game until after OpenMw's 1.0 release, but they're an important stepping stone in a lore friendly night sky, something vanilla Morrowind fails to represent.
