Let me first start by saying I've had this game for about a week(I know I'm late to the party) and I'm loving the game. One of the things I'm not loving is the constant issues I face with the game.

Here are my specs:
Windows XP Professional 32bit (SP3)
AMD Phenom II X3 710 Processor
2.60 GHz, 3.25 GB of RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6850

As you can see, my computer should be able to handle this game easily. For some reason, however, I'm having a lot of difficulty getting the game even playable much less presentable. My problem mainly occurs during combat. I figure I'd save some trouble by posting a video so you guys can see exactly what I'm talking about, I also have a dxdiag dump to look at. Figure it'd be a good idea to show what I've tried already too.


So, the video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHQ4ZFCFxcg. This is at MINIMUM settings(everything turned down as low as possible, no AA/AF, no HDR/Bloom, low resolution). With my specs, this shouldn't be happening. I have nothing running the background(I didn't disable my firewall, though I've tried it before, it does not help). I at first traced the lag to the "bUseThreadedAI" fix, since I wouldn't get the lag with it off but I would get crashes. However, I quickly realized that I was just getting crashes INSTEAD of lag. Perhaps it's a compatibility issue with my CPU? I've also considered the possibility that it has something to do with the AI, however, that doesn't seem evident since the game runs smoothly at 90 FPS on ultra in towns as long as nothing is hostile. The moment something becomes hostile, I get a little bit of lag. Seems to be equivalent of the minor stutter, but it becomes exponentially worse as more hostiles are around me. It feels like a CPU problem but it doesn't seem likely since my CPU outshines even the recommended one(even with the 2 thread limit) yet the problem persists in low detail. I'll also point out that the audio is almost always like that, even when I'm just walking around and the FPS is smooth.

I'm aware of the issue with fddshow, however, fallout3.exe IS added to the exceptions. Changing that makes no difference.

Pretty much out of ideas here. I've tried the bUseThreadedAI fix(as stated above) including AND excluding the iNumHWThreads line. With this is stops it from crashing(at least immediately during lag) but the lag persists. I've tried uninstalling K-Lite, which didn't work so I reinstalled it. Tried fddshow both with exclusion and without, I've tried the FPS Clamp fix, which only made the game run slow while still being choppy, I tried disabling vsync which helped with performance but not much else, was irrelevant to the problem, have updated all my drivers, including audio drivers. I've tried the iPresentInterval fix, did nothing, tried setting the quality lower, results are obvious from the video, I tried disabling AND enabling triple buffering, no difference, I've tried running in windowed mode(with and without maximize window), no difference, I've tried the unofficial patch, no help, I've tried the mod specifically meant to stop stuttering, no help. I might have tried other things and forgotten about them, too, after this last week or so it's hard to keep track.

Those of you who read this whole thing, thanks for sticking around. I wanna make sure I'm thorough so it's clear exactly what's going on. If you have any tips suggestions experience with this problem or even just some random idea I can try please feel free to say so. Now, I'm off to bed. If I get any responses I'll try any suggestions and update tomorrow.
