Performance enhancing drugs to play video games? Really?

Post » Wed Jul 15, 2015 7:32 pm

Just when I thought I herd it all, here is something I just need to shake my head at. It's bad enough some sport athletes cheat and use performance enhancing drugs. Now some gamers are doing it in e-sports. Sorry I can't remember the article I read it, I believe it was on my cell phone so I can't link it. Basically these "professional gamers" use ADHD drugs or something like that to make them "focus" better.

So now we have gamers who cheat. Sadly this gamer who was interviewed didn't care. Shooting out F bombs saying "everyone does it so it's ok, right?"

So I guess e-sports are a joke now since "everyone" is taking drugs and get an edge. I just never thought now for e-sports to be taken seriously, you will need to pee in a bottle to make sure you are not a cheater like in major pro sports or Olympics now.

So what do you think of taking performance enhancing drugs to play video games?

Is there a rule against using these drugs? If not how is it cheating?

Considering that professional e-sport players are sponsored by companies, and the prizes can reach into the thousands of dollars, it makes sense that people would be concerned about cheating.
But it might be tricky to say what is "too much" cheating. Will they outlaw caffeine and energy drinks too, or just the drugs?

Yeah, the whole thing seems a bit silly to me. I actually tend to play my games MORE after I've taken my daily pain pills then before, for whatever reason they help me focus on a single task a bit easier. If I was to become a pro gamer, would that then be considered cheating?

Honestly I don't see an issue with taking ritalin or something like that to help you focus better. Just about anyone and their mother can go to a doctor and say "I'm having trouble focusing on daily tasks" and they'll get prescribed Adderall or something similar.

Doesn't bother me much.

There is no active rule against it, to my knowledge. So I can see how it would be attractive to take performance enhancer like adderall. Especially when there's huge cash pools on the line.

Hell, companies make "pre workout" products that contain a blend of ingredients for energy and increased performance. Does that mean the muscles they get are cheating? I would say not.

meh, it's not cheating unless it's breaking a rule. If there's no rule it's not cheating. Whether it's smart is a different story.

And to drive that point home: There are examples of MLG rules ALLOWING glitches to be used competitively... Of course I personally find MLG pretty stupid to begin with.

The only problem with energy and caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea and soda is that for gaming you better have a catheter or a toilet nearby cause that stuff makes you pee like a horse.

Hmm maybe that's why I can never block people's attacks on Warband.

You can be more focused, but it wouldn't be of much use if the other player has more skill than you, while in a "real" sport, you would have a real big advantage upon your opponent.

Nah, is just the MB WB block mechanics messing with you. Just let your Swadian Knights and Swadians Sharpshooters do the Dirty Work :D

If there is no rule, then it isn't cheating. Make a rule, then enforce it.

Look at steroids in the NFL. Been a history of them going back to the Lions of the 50s, but notably the Steelers of the 70s arw always brought up...though back then they were 100% legal.

That's the way I see it. I suppose it could help you, but I don't think it will give you any actual advantage over someone else. It's nothing like the use of drugs in physical sports. It's like taking such drugs for a test (I used to take similar medication back in school). Keeps you focused, but won't help unless you actually know your stuff.
