dx 11 performance question

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:32 pm

Hey!

Right now i can run this on my gaming laptop at 800x600 on extreme settings. With fps so high i had to put v sync on. Im really looking foreward to the dx 11 patch, but i want to know should i expect that to kill my performance a bit or make my gpu relle hot? I hear alot of people saying it will look better with the same performance, is that true?

just wondering :P

Why are you only running at 800x600? and depending on how demanding the features they add are will depend on how much you gpu takes a hit. but the game will only look better for it, so anyone moaning about performance when it arrives (unless it's truly abysmal, like 12fps on sli gtx580 for not much improvement) is just being silly.

DERP! forgot specs

intel core i5
ati radeon hd 5730m 1gb
direct x 11
windoiws 7 64 bit
4 gigs ram
native rez is 1366x768

as for the 800x600, well im stuck at that for every crysis game. I want the best graphics possible at the best framerate and im lucky that my laptop can do that but the downside is If i bring the rez any higher my fps noticably drops. due to the game's graphical beauty i never have noticed the low rez tho in any of them :P
If the developers put in anti aliasing control then maybe i could up the rez. i forgot that its on by default. i try the shortcut command and the autoexec/system cfg command but it doesn't work for me.

crappy gpu u say?
challenge accepted >=)
can run the following either fully maxed or nearly maxed (meaning aa off or something like heat haze off, something minor):

napoelon: total war (fully maxed with no aa and heat distortion and ssao off, all other settings very high)
just cause 2 (1024x768 all settings maxed but no aa)
world in conflict (fully maxed)
fallout 3 (fully maxed)
cod 4 (fully maxed)
bioshock (fully maxed)
tropico 3 (fully maxed)
far cry 2 (fully maxed)
mafia ii
+more
400 shader cores
8-channel HD audio output over HDMI 1.3
can apparently do eyefinity for up to 6 monitors....which i did not know..thts just the gpu tho the actual laptop might not have the proper config

all crysis games run max settings 800x600 save shadows and aa on #1 which r on medium, and no aa
25-50fps

to be frank, especially for a laptop, i'd have to say i heartily disagree sir
a crappy gpu wuld be the ati radeon x1600....which is on my desktop......eeewww
compared to a latest desktop pc....yeah no defenses i surrender

One man's crap is another man's gold. Anyways when dx11 hits crysis 2 u might game some performance gain because of directcompute

25-50FPS at 800x600 is NOT good. It just isn't. That's a lower resolution than console games run at. 800x600 is beyond outdated.

It runs 'well' because the resolution is so low and having played at that resolution, and now at 1680x1050, I can say from experience that 8x6 is absolute TURD.

8x6 PLUS no AA? You're insane.

Higher resolutions require less anti-aliasing, it's a long explanation so just Google it.

due to the game's graphical beauty i never have noticed the low rez tho in any of them :P

Bullcrap. Try turning the resolution up to native at the same settings, take a screenshot, now lower to 800x600 and take a screenshot. If you can't tell the difference between the two I advise that you get your eyes checked.

@leeham LOL u sounded like u half raged right there ^
yeah there's nothing i can do about the 800x600. crysis games are the only games in my library i am stuck at that rez with. i can have aa in crysis 2 tho apparently...seeing as its on by default lol with no way of changing it. anti aliasing is never a big deal for me i can have it on or off it doesnt bug me, but i try to put it on when i can. some gamers i know it does bother tho, but not me. the low rez in crysis i rarely notice due to the games graphical prowess. so im fine with it typically because it looks to me like cgi anyways. :P the main things in crysis games that i cannot stand lowered are shaders and textures etc etc. but the rez i make an exception.

@emperorCleon
THAT is nice! maybe i wont be stuck at 800x600 this time around :D do you think the graphics will improve by alot or marginally? I think they look great already for dx9 :P

@ xeno_predator
despite my apathy towards rezolution i do not doubt it looks amazing on higher rez compared to what i see.
im only on a laptop tho so i can only get what i can untill i inevitably build a rig in the future.

Some people don't mind 800x600. The guy calling that crap doesn't mind 1680x1050. I think that 1680x1050 is crap as I play in 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. I'm sure there will be those who play at 2560x1600 who think my display is crap. At the end of the day if you are happy with what you have, where is the problem?

I think the low res just stunned them......I didn't notice any of them say though that you could up the res to a higher one with "lower" settings and it could actualy look better.

keeping or even improving the framerate

Yeah but with crysis i always want the best graphics, to me that's one of the series' main features. I compromise the resolution for the sake of the most detailed most complicated settings. I would rather trade resolution for detail with good framerate than vice versa :P

You can not say 800x600 vs 1680x1050 is anything like 1680 vs 1920...

800 extra horizontal pixels is a huge difference. 240 extra is not a dramatic jump. The only advantage you have is you need less AA (generally speaking).

Unless your playing on an 8"-10" screen then 8x6 is a joke.

He's running at none HD resolutions..
DX11 will only increase performance if it's creating the same effects in DX9 using DX11, which it won't be, it'd require the game being pretty much rewritten.

max dx11 will run worse than dx9 as it'll have a lot more features. Dx11 with no change in settings from the current ones will likely run a bit better.
