Performance Question

Yes indeed, it is one of those threads again. Oblivion runs fine on certain occasions, but randomly drops down from 40-60 fps to 15-25 fps. Usually happens during combat or when at the Waterfront etc.

I was running QTP3R at first, so I decided to uninstall and see if that made a difference. It did not.

OSR does not seem to help either.

Streamline recommends I lower my actor and object distances to crazy low levels (like 14%) which is not happening because that almost breaks the game for me.

And the 4GB patch has been applied

My in game settings are as follows:

Spoiler
All distant actors objects set to 50%
Distant Land at 100%
Shadows at default values of 4 and 2 respectively
Using tree canopy and grass shadows
Shadow Filter is set at Low
Only using HDR
All other settings are High Detail

And it seems a PC with my specs would be able to run this setup fine:

Spoiler
AMD Phenom II X4 965 @3.4 ghz (quad-core)
ATI Radeon HD 5770 (set to OC at 925 Mhz for Core Speed and 1360 Mhz for Memory Speed)
12 GB of DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

So what do you think is holding me back?

I don't see any potential bottlenecks there with your system that would give you those fps drops.

Do you have a cap set through Streamline on what your fps can be? I know the mod can limit the fps in a way.

Also, are you using onboard sound? The game can be quite iffy with onboard sound causing all sorts of fps issues and even crashes. If you're using onboard sound, you can try going into your .ini file in you My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder and look for the configuration settings file named Oblivion....open it with notepad and do a CTRL+F to search for this line:

bMusicEnabled=1

...set it to 0 and save it. Then see if things improve.

Think you meant =0 :to turn music off to test if that was the problem !

Also what resolution are you playing at ??

The only FPS cap I have set is in OSR and it's set at 60 fps to help prevent screen tearing (my monitor has a 60 hz refresh rate). I turned off Streamline's streamsmooth feature because it was more a nuisance than a helper.

Also, are you using onboard sound? The game can be quite iffy with onboard sound causing all sorts of fps issues and even crashes. Huh. Never knew that could be an issue. I'll give it a try real quick and post my results.

Also what resolution are you playing at ??

1920x1080, which is the native resolution of the monitor I have

EDIT: I changed bMusicEnabled to 0, and there was no difference whatsoever.

Any other ideas?

Turn off the overclocking on your vid card, and see what happens.

Also, post a full dxdiag, and lets see what ya got. :D

Good Idea -- with the newer DDR5 RAM OCing can actually slow performance if it is not stable (DDR5 incorporates error checking and if there are many errors due to the OC it will slow the card down while it waits for the corrected info to be resent (instead of older DDR versions which would just display the artifacts on screen) - so you might have too high of an OC on the card !
