Periodic CTDs

Post » Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:10 pm

Every 30 minutes or so of gameplay, I get a CTD. It happens everywhere, inside or outside, and the only constant I've noticed is that there's usually an NPC or creature onscreen when it happens, and it happens indoors more often than not. What's really annoying about it is that it's not reproducible, ie. even if I retrace my steps, or happen to save right before it happens, I can't get it to happen twice in the same place, so I can't rely on the old trick of disabling all my mods and turning them on one by one. I've tried repairing my save file in Wrye Mash and it says there are no errors.

Here's my load order:

I'm on Windows 7 x86 and using the latest version of MGE XE, if that helps. I doubt it's MGE, both because it frequently happens indoors, and because when MGE crashes, I think it tries to make a "restore" save, which hasn't been happening in this case. Regardless, I'm going to try playing with MGE disabled for a while to see if it's the cause after this post. If anybody else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

This is an old problem that I doubt will ever go away, although MCP seems to help a little. It seems to be hardware dependent. I have played MW over 7 years and on 4 different computers; the first crashed every 40 minutes, the second every 90, you get the idea. There are some specific places that may trigger the crash slightly prematurely like leaving the Balmora Mages guild but I have concluded that it's just something you have to live with and I've long given up trying to fix it.

I just played for about 30 minutes with MGE turned off and had no problems, so that's something. Of course, due to the unpredictable nature of these crashes, it could just mean I got "lucky". I'll come back after I've played for a prolonged period of time with my results.

If you're using a lot of mods that require MWSE that can cause more crashes.
Or if your Distant Land is set too high for your computer.

Although I agree with Fragonard about the games inherit instability, I often can play 2 hours without any problems. (on a very un-fancy computer)
- Be sure to Save often, making a new save file each time.
- Don't reload if you die. Restart the whole game.
- try the http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php on the Morrowind.exe (make sure you do it after the Code Patch installation)

I probably should've mentioned that I've run the MCP, timeslip's exe optimizer and the 4gb patch on my exe, in that order. I also save in a new slot each time and the only MWSE mods I have are the HUD enhancements for MGEXE. I haven't been restarting the game every time I load, but I don't die very often, so hopefully that hasn't done much damage, if any.

It seems unlikely to be distant land, considering that the crashes happen inside more often than not, but I was pretty conservative with the settings when generating it.

Well, that does it. I played for 2 hours last night with MGEXE off and had no problems. Then I played for half an hour this morning with MGEXE on, but every feature off, and I got a crash. Looks like I'll have to take this up with the MGE people and see if they can help.
