perks vs attributes

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:50 am

There are many people that are really disappointed with the fact that perks will replace attributes, for you what is the better choice and why?
i changed my poll to which one would you prefere to have, since someone explained to me that they both are totally different things.

A poll is a good idea. I vote perks.

How about a couple of more options:

- perks with attributes are better
- attributes are better, and obsolete perks

If you deal in absolutes, then you are a Sith.

Attributes and Perks. Add it to the poll.

There is so much more possibility with perks. Attributes can never compare to the customization that perks can offer.

Potentially speaking, of course. I have yet to see how well they'll be implemented in Skyrim, but I am optimistic.

Where is the both in moderation option? I'd like to see both, they would work very well in conjunction.

I think perks are better, those are the only thing I actually notice that change gameplay in fallout games

Perks because

They give us more choices

Easier to level up no more needing to worry about X skill being such stat so that Attribute raises certain amount of points

No God 100 Attribute 100 Skill characters. It still will be possible to get 100 skills but if you do that then you won't be able to get some of the better perks

Attributes and skills are the same and you could easily merge them together

It makes things more simple to use

No more grinding hours just to get an essential +5 Attribute stat

No need to raise a skill that you won't use just to get a +5 in certain attribute like for example Blade a skill that you want to specialize but you raise Hand to Hand a skill that you won't specialize in just to get +5 in Strength

Oops, I meant to type:

- perks are better, and obsolete attributes

as the second option.

This poll is to see what you would rather have if you had to choose one. It's fine OP.

Something like this - Perks modify and improve upon the character you make in lieu of a blank gray amorphous blob. Kinda like - Fallout games..

Instead of three "attributes" which are really abstract force levels like the average First Person Shooter.

Perks don't replace attributes. Skills and HP/MP/Stam bonuses at level up replace attributes.

Everyone already knows how this poll will end up. Pointless.

I didn't vote, the new system now has perks included, ok, but attributes should have remained.

edit:at least some options hve been added.

I think we need for informaton about how the whole system would work. This includes how encumbrance would work, and weapon damage levels. How are races different other than cosmesis and latent abilities? Do they receive bonus perks? The mechanics of the game need to released and explained in whole rather that bits and pieces revealed and large amounts of the forum ends up bickering amongst itself.

Some attributes may not be necessary, but things like physical strength, speed, weight carrying ability and jumping height can not be measured by perks in any skill they without feeling unbalanced or out of place. If you disagree, say which ones.

The best way I've heard it put:
Attributes are about generalization, perks about about specialization. You can't use them interchangeably.

I voted Attributes, because skills already work as specialization points. We're missing the generalization part. I also think that, if a large amount of people think they seem useless, then improve them. (They're really not useless. There's a lot that they do, and a lot that they have the opportunity to do, people just don't seem to care enough about that part of their character to notice.)

I'd like both, but until the game comes out, I can't really say.

On the plus side, no more +5 grinding, whooooooo!

I was thinking that sort of thing but couldn't think how to explain it in words, but you put it perfectly. Like a strong person will have an advantage with both one handed weapons, two handed weapons and hand to hand fighting. You can't put it under any of those skills.

Attributes were a shackle on the freedom of skill choices.
If I'm a mage and I want to raise my Intelligence (thereby increasing my magicka,) I have to use Conjuration, Mysticism, or Alchemy. None of those are skills I like (except in Morrowind, where Mysticism let me teleport,) so I'm stuck with stacking tons of points in Willpower or grinding up skills I don't use. The new system lets you role a Destruction-Alteration-Restoration-Illusion mage and still increase your magicka.

Excatly that's why Attributes had to go they held you back as to what you could do with your skills.
