Perks in Skyrim?

Post » Thu Jun 24, 2010 3:44 pm

Perks is a terrible idea leave it in Fallout. I mean why do we have to have Fallout stuff in the Elder Scrolls just because a few people are disapointed because they don't have the skill to succeed in Oblivion that doesn't mean we should cave in and let them make the game watered down like it is in the Fallout Universe :flamethrower: :fallout:

No. I would not like to see any leveling perks like in Oblivion, nor any perks the way it was implemented into Fallout that everyone is making a big fuss about. I'd much rather see Morrowind skill progression come back.

Birthsigns and racial features, if you consider them perks, are fine with me.

The Elder Scrolls do not equals Fallout 3.

If you want perks, just play Fallout 3.

Skill Books are already like perks so I voted yes. I would imagine that it could be a extended to give a small temporary boost to a stat. IE: a Restoration book would give the usual +1 increase and a temporary +5 boost to Restoration as if you got it from a wayshrine in Oblivion. Books that give you extra damage on certain creatures or improve certain spell effects is also a good idea in my opinion.

I voted yes only because I'm in favor of anything that grants us more customization of our characters. It doesn't need to be "perks" as in Fallout. The idea of special skills picked at level up is hardly unique to Fallout. Look at the Feats in D&D 3rd edition, which came out in the early 80s. Feats increase role playing possibilities by allowing you to make your character more unique.

Imagine being able to pick "Favored Enemy: Dunmer" for a former Khajiit slave freed from Morrowind.

Absolutely Not, not in the way they work in Fallout, anyway. The Elder scrolls is successful in no small part because of it's unique RPG gameplay. Every other RPG out there uses XP points, only bethesda games have your skills improve as you use them.

That being said, I liked the "perks" in oblivion that game you special rewards and bonuses when you reached 25, 50, 75, and 100 level of skill say in armorer.

Yes, but implemented in another way. Not by leveling up, but by achieving things in-game, quests, factions and from trainers.
There should be restrictions on the perks you can have depending on what type of character you play, and the choices he/she makes in the game.

Examples:
  • A mage won't be able to get the best swordsman perks. (because he's a mage... duh) :P
  • A character chooses a path in a quest, and does not get the perk he/she would get if he chose the other path... this perk will never be available to that character, but there might be another perk associated with the path he/she chose.
  • A hand-to-hand fighter character visits a trainer, and gets a perk that adds a fly-kick combat move. This perk would not be available if his skill in acrobatics and hand-to-hand was not high enough.

We have those already. They're very large, tall Orcs.

I do NOT want to see a Fallout style perk system.

HOWEVER, I would love to see a return to Daggerfall style advantages and disadvantages. (see http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/29065-the-elder-scrolls-chapter-ii-daggerfall/faqs/50211 here)

Don't want perks in my TES the way Fallout 3 had them.

I would be fine with getting them as they where introduced in previous Elder Scroll games like with Corprus making you immune to disease in Morrowind and being able to summon Haskill in Shivering Isles.

Also, having to level up Armorer to get the perk to be able to repair magic items was some serious BS :glare: .

If the perks in TES 4 are a new edition it is no wonder that I never even heard of the earlier games and I have been playing video games for over 20 years now.... or maybe I am an uncivilized barbarian. You can call them "skills" you can call them "special abilities" you can call them "pixie dust" but they bring life to combat.

I think the word perks is what's upsetting people more than the gameplay implications. I don't want fallout style perks on levelling up but I think that they could definately add more depth to character customisation which, for me, is one of the best things about TES. I think making the racial abilities a bit more unique (think argonion water breathing rather than +5 insert-skill-here) would be good and I think the NV achievment style perks would fit right into TES. Perks as a reward for completing quests (like grey princes training) are a good idea too because a side effect of elder scrolls skill progression system is that completing quests isn't really rewarded well enough.

HAHA!!!

I was right... Fallout 3 style perks will be in Skyrim...

Here's a quote from Todd Howard:

"When you level up, you get a chance to pick a perk, something we did a lot of with Fallout 3. We actually did them in Oblivion, it's just the perks happened automatically as you raise those skills. And we feel it's really fun to pick them. It let's me define my character more."

I know this may piss off a lot of you traditionalists, but I for one am totally stoked...

I have mixed feelings about this... I think it is good with the omitted skills and what appears to be the abolition of attributes.

People who do not want perks in Skyrim are basically too late in their wishes. They're hard-coded in now, and removing them will make the game very dumbed down indeed.

Honestly this was the one thing I most feared about Skyrim. I had a feeling it'd happen and it did. I just hope the leveling system is not too similar to FO3

I thought it was pretty much ideal in Fallout New Vegas.

I personally like the idea of perks, but it really depends on what kind of perks there will be.

Yes, I do. They make my character that much more unique. Their just fun and spice things up, even if there not tradtitonal in TES games.

Specialization perks would be great in my opinion (Mace perk to ignore armor%?). Wierd comic relief stuff would be bad in my opinion (Wild Wasteland - Silly Skyrim?)

This. Is. Not. Fallout. 4.

Pffffft no super mutants please.

I want my Summon Deathclaw spell. :hubbahubba:

At first I was against Fallout style perks, but since they are gonna be in the game anyways I just gotta get used to it, plus as others have said they could give the oppurtunity for the skills that are still in the game to be more diverse, or atleast the different weapons and such. So I am sort of excited about them now.
