permissions

hi., recently people were kind enough to help me find a couple mod packs to use for cemetary parts. i read the permissions on them. one said i could use without permission. the other was not so direct in what is allowed and i want to be sure im not doin something im not supposed to, so i am asking for someone to please translate this. thankyou.

"Do not port to other games. Keep the directory structure intact. This mod may not be rehosted anywhere without permission. Please give me credit if you distribute any part of this mod."

is the maker tryin to say just dont use in games other than oblivion? or dont restructure the directory? or does rehosted mean i cant use it at all for making mods? thanks.

By the sounds of it, they are saying:

1) Do not use these resources in Non-Oblivion Games.
2) Keep the Structure as is (probably because thins need that structure)
3) Do not re-upload the whole mod.
4) You CAN use parts, but give credit.

What I would do, if I were you, is e-mail/PM them, and ask for permission, just to be on the safe side :)

Meo is very reasonable. Just send a PM on TES Nexus and you should get a response in two or three days.

Like CMD_ said:

- to only be used in TES: Oblivion
- keep the folder directory intact. Two reasons, first to avoid duplicates with other mods, second, if a V2 is ever made, it will update your mods automatically by installing an other mod containing the new version or you simply updating it.
- This is my mod, redistributing it as-is is not permitted, but part of your mod is OK.
- Always give credits for others work, always.

Enjoy.

I've always thought that "keep the directory structure" part needs a couple of caveats:

If you have to change anything when you use a resource in your mod, it's important to make a new form for it, and not overwrite the original. When you do that, you should also put the modified item in a different folder, so that version 2 doesn't wipe out your change by completely replacing the folder with one without it. You should make sure as well that you copy out ALL of the item - so copy the texture as well as the nif, even though you're not changing it. Version 2 could replace the nifs with ones that rename all the textures and the old texture name won't exist any more.

If you're just using it unchanged, leave it where it is to benefit from any potential upgrades. But there's still a grey area - I'll copy an item out to a new folder if I want to make sure a new version doesn't change it at all.

You need to ask yourself two questions: Did I change anything? and Does it matter to me if the original creator makes a change?
