Persuasion minigame --> Fail!

Post » Mon Nov 22, 2010 4:53 pm

Since it has been confirmed that the good old face zoom conversations have been scrapped I think it would be safe to say that the speechcraft mini game from Oblivion will not return in the same form. In Oblivion you clearly had to see the persons facial expressions. Since there is no face zoom and the person could keep continuing on what they are doing (like chopping wood) during a conversation it would be tough to use Oblivion's speechcraft mini game. Which, for me is good news cause I thought it was pretty lame.

Oblivion's Speechcraft minigame should not be removed. It should be burned, flayed, staked over a nest of fire ants, and the carcass left there in the next game to rot as a constant reminder never to do that again.

It failed on so many levels, it amazes me. First, it had no real connection to your character's speechcraft skill. Whatever your skill with the minigame was, THAT's how good your character was, no matter if they had a 100 or a 5 skill in it. Second, it didn't bear any resemblance to even a crude caricature of "speech", which at least the lockpick game did. The stupid wheel wasn't even an abstraction, it was a totally unrelated "substitute" for a conversation. Third, what sane person would alternately Taunt, Admire, Intimidate, and Boast in the same conversation? Even if the listener didn't run away looking for a healer or a guard, they most certainly wouldn't LIKE you for it. Fourth, it was buggy. Not only didn't it work in a rational manner, it didn't even work properly in its intended irrational manner.

Bethesda, PLEASE reprimand whoever was responsible for implementing this disaster.

Make it simple. Like the 'speech' system in FO.

You are not alone, I love Oblivion, but this was the weakest link imho, even worse than the psychic guards.

STOP RIGHT THERE LAWBREAKER! No, there was nothing worse than psychic guards. That killed (no pun intended) the game when I was trying to silently dispatch a shop or home owner.

TBH with the trend from Morrowind to Oblivion, I'd say get rid of speechcraft.
In Oblivion it was a junk skill only useful for glitches and those of us that roleplayed.
Anyone could pretty much harvest the skill as much as possible to raise it for the stat points, skill gain to 100 or quest factor, for the completionists.

Not much apart from not zooming in and having the NPC's carry on with animations.
So as it stands unless not a minigame or way to get PC's to attack you so you don't go to jail for killing them.
Rather choice based, character based and of use it's a dump stat or a piece of ineffective gameplay.
