Pete Hines:DLC have priority over release of CK

Post » Sat Feb 27, 2016 5:23 am

I welcome the dlc coming first. And I'm happy about todays patch.. And it is heartening to know that Beth are beavering away at improving and adding to the game that I have spent 300 online hours in, and probably the same offline.

It always amazes me to see some of the spiteful words which are hurled in their direction.

If the geck had been issued first, I'm sure there would have been a wounded howling also. (from a minority).

They can not please everyone.

I'm a Fallout fan, so I'd end up buying Fallout anyway. But I've never purchased a console version of an Elder Scrolls or Bethesda Fallout game, and that's because I consider modding to be a key feature of these games. Every one of these games has come with modding tools going back all the way to Morrowind. If they announced that the next Elder Scrolls game wasn't going to have modding tools or would be locked off from modding, it'd be the first game I'd give a pass.

At this point, those tools are expected. It's not a gift, it's an expected feature of the PC version. That's why they made a point to say that the console versions would be mod compatible.

And I'm a bit pissed that the DLC is taking priority over the CK. I get that it takes time, but what does this announcement mean? Does it mean we're going to have to wait until all of the planned 2016 DLC is finished before it's coming out? Does it mean that we should expect it to eventually come out sometime summer or fall 2016?

I'm just grateful that modders have figured out how to build Fallout mods using the Skyrim tools.

Well said on both points. If the engine needs to be cleaned up for the CK/GECK to work, then that takes priority. Especially if any DLC is going to really change up some aspect how the game works.

Because the Creation Kit is a privilege, not a right. Until recently most companies didn't allow, let alone encourage, modding the way Bethesda does.

Further, only a third of their audience will actually use mods, so of course they'll prioritize DLC; something all players can use.

Exactly the mods are a major reason I buy BGS games. Its part of the package there is no entitlement here, rather the seller living up to their promise. I understand the wait but I don't have to like it.

But it's not a privilage, it's a feature they promised.

And the Steam sales on day 1 were released. 1.2 million copies. At say $60 a pop, that's around $72 Million. Compare that to the estimated $102 Million from console sales. That's not a minute population.

But this is actually a bit moot. The original poster was misleading. Pete's tweet was not that they were going to delay the CK. But that they weren't going to delay anything and were going to release the DLC and CK as they were ready.

Pete's Tweet:

we're getting things out as soon as we can get them done. not going to hold DLC if we finish it because of CK

I think I figured it out.

The CK is being held up due to the mods-on-console thing. They're probably waiting to see if Sony comes around, and in any case, will still need to work on the mod distribution system and how they'll screen 'em for Microsoft.

Of course they're focusing on DLCs for now! Releasing the CK, even though it won't be on consoles, is just a small aspect of the whole system they'll need to put in place.

I'm betting they also want to release everything at once. What better way is there to announce the Mods on Consoles functionality going live than to release the Creation Kit at the same time?

A little perspective is due here.

1. BGS is a for-profit company. I'm not being all anti-corporate, it's just a fact. Prioritizing things that will bring in additional revenue is just good business sense. Additionally, many have already paid for their DLC, perhaps BGS wants to give them some love before handing out a freebie.

2. DLC is something ALL players can use RIGHT AWAY, regardless of platform. CK will (initially) only benefit PC users.

3. These DLCs have probably been in the works for months. It wouldn't surprise me if Far Harbor was being worked on before vanilla F4 even launched. Things get released when they're ready.

4. As mentioned by others, they likely want to ensure the CK is compatible with the new content. FO4 is a fairly buggy piece of software, releasing an incomplete/unpolished CK won't help the cause.

Just some food for thought.

Doubt that is the case. Playstation users have always been shafted when it came to Bethesda DLC. So why should they change now? Geck and console mods are two different things. Geck allows modders to create their mods on the PC while console mods require some type of distribution program for players to search for and download mods. It is actually preferable for Geck to be released a few weeks earlier than the console distribution system so that console users actually have some decent mods available at the beginning.

Indeed, that's sort of my point. FO4 is the least buggy BGS game in ages, maybe EVER.

However, FO4 is still pretty buggy compared to other AAA games, and most of FO4's bugs are carryovers from previous FO and ES titles. BGS took quite the tounge-lashing for this. They don't want to repeat that with the CK.

Strong assertions from someone not sitting in the dev team.

As someone already pointed out I would rather have them work out any outstanding bugs and then release the CK. FO4Edit already allows us a great deal of modding. I have mods that change just about every aspect of the game from damage to enemy and player health to weather to building new buildings beyond the default ones.

Also, keep in mind they are adding new features like surival mode which I assume they are tacking on at the last minute so they might have to add those fields into the CK as they go along anyways.

They brought in actual Sony programmers for Skyrim's DLCs to make it work on the Playstation after Bethesda kept delaying the DLCs due to performance issues, and it still took them half a year before they reached a playable state. That tells me that Playstation users getting shafted by DLCs isn't purely Bethesda's fault.

If the Sony programmers spend months trying to get something stable after the original dev team specifically asks for their help, something regarding the compatability has gone horribly wrong. By all accounts, the current PS4 has architecture is more in-line with a PC than the older PS3. This means it's easier to program for.

Glad OP realized he misread the tweet. I thought it was pretty obvious that he was saying they wouldn't hold the CK back if DLC wasn't done. This should make everyone happy? I don't see the issue.

I'd edit the first post then. A lot of people only read the first page before starting to post a reply.

Yeah I read the tweet and didn't get what the issue was. As OP mentioned it was just a simple misinterpretation on his part.

Gotta love Pete Hines answering questions about the Season Pass price bump though, he is sort of my hero in that scenario. Not because of the price bump, but how he totally oblierates the haters.

I didn't see that. Link or quote? His previous retorts were quite enjoyable. I prefer a little standstrong over complete pushover PR guys.

Chances are that most pc players has either bought season pass or just wait, note that the Wasteland workshop is very likely to include stuff who would be very nice to have in mods so it would become required for lots of settlement related mods.

Good link - but gives no clue about release of the Creation Kit.

It does make it sound like Console DLCs will be distributed through the normal mod path.

Actually - that would make a lot of sense.
