Pete Hines on Multiplayer

Didn't come up in search, so I thought I'd share this.

I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing multiplayer anytime soon. I'm glad.

I am also glad, for two reasons:

1) I have a pretty low quality internet connection, and I won't be able to get a better one. While web browsing is ok, online games lag

2) I really don't ever want to see "Ub3R1337Dr4g00nSki11z0rz killed a dragon!!!!!"

I am very glad to read that article. Too many games are all about multiplayer for no reason these days. I like single-player games, and it makes me happy that the lovely people at Bethesda are continuing to focus on wonderful single-player experiences as opposed to multiplayer.

At least we know that some people in this world have common sense.

(BTW, I noticed that me and Pete have the same name...compleatly unrelated, but odd still.)

I think there's potential in multiplayer for the series. Maybe add arena death-match mode or online co-op with a buddy. But other than that I see no way of it working.

Multi-player always has some sort of potential. But I'd rather see a "4-player co-op" sort of scenario. I love TES series, I do... but I could care less about the loneliness that surrounds playing the game. I'd love to run the fields, mountains, forests, dungeons with some REAL companions at my side.

I'm glad too. I'm right with them on their philosophy for the open world games. I also don't want them to make games like everyone else is making; they should do their own thing. Build it and they will come. :D

Wow...that was incredibly blunt, especially coming from a PR guy. Nice and refreshing to hear (er, read) too.

Nice to hear someone finally be blunt about the matter. If you're only adding multiplayer to the game simply for the sake of having it, then it shouldn't be added. So many formerly single player series have come out recently with tacked on multiplayer modes, and unsurprisingly these games have often suffered for them. And what's worse, is that the multiplayer isn't even very good by industry standards in most of them. I'd much rather developers focus on one goal. Either make the best single player game you can, or make the best multiplayer experience that you can. Half assing one to the detriment of the other is never acceptable. If you must create an experience where they are combined, do it properly and for the right reasons. Otherwise, not at all.

I wouldn't mind a "side game" in the series with co op, but definitely not for a true TES game.

Someone, somewhere, at some time, perhaps last year around when I first joined the forums, made a wonderful thread with I believe no replies, but it was recommended for anyone who thought a multiplayer version of a TES game is possible. It perfectly explained how it was impossible to make such a game in the same first person sandbox style in which we've played the past few games. It would be cool to play with friends, but I really don't think it's necessary in this type of game. Sure, I wouldn't mind a multiplayer game with a tes theme (even though that may ruin Bethesda's and the series reputation) but I just don't think it's worth the effort.

I'm definitely glad Bethesda have more sense than to listen to the people constantly asking for multiplayer. It would pretty much turn out to be a token feature and a complete waste of dev time in my opinion.

I'm a big believer in singleplayer games being exclusively singleplayer, and multiplayer games being exclusively multiplayer. I mean, why dilute the quality of both just to squeeze both into one game? Either make an amazing singleplayer game or an amazing multiplayer game - don't do both.

Meh, I think that'll turn out to be cheesy and not worthwhile. These games excel on exploration, but so much combat. Sure, it could work but I can't find myself considering the game an improvement with an online arena.

A game should either be focused on single player or multiplayer. TES never should go the multiplayer route... ever.
