Petition for hardcoe mode (New Vegas stile)

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:08 pm

I was thinking how much I enjeoyed the hunger and thirst modifiers in new vegas, brought so much flavour to the world of Skyrim...

Going to the frozen north would require the player to meke provisions, also raw food would have a chance to cause deseases. Not sure about a thirst modifier, as there is a lot of water in skyrim.

Would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Yes! But make it optional, it would certainly give cooking a point...

Hell yes, there should be a hardcoe mode! They add cooking but not the need to eat? Come on!

Bethesda, this would complete the game for me. Through simple addition of a hardcoe system Skyrim will be everything I want in a game. We have a cooking system, we have the ability to gather firewood, we not add a mechanic where you can create a fire in the wild to rest at (Red Dead Redemption Style) by using firewood, then if you have a cooking pot can create food. My one major gripe however is scaling. And what I mean by this is that if you're playing on "Master" difficulty, it should take a shorter amount of time to die of thirst/hunger/sleep/rads (I'm kidding about rads...body temperature maybe? ...that would be another great addition) than it would on "Expert" ect. New Vegas' hardcoe mode was great, but I can spend about an in game week without sleep before I died...and the penalties at that point weren't severe enough for me to really even worry about it.

Altogether the addition of a hardcoe mode would be the best thing to happen to this game and I would gladly start my game over to implement it.

There'll be plenty of mods available for this as soon as we actually get the toolset.

Well, one thing I thought of before the game actually came out - time not freezing in any menu except the "system" menu. Not the map, skills, items, favorites, magic, stats or quests menus - only the system menu should freeze time so that (1) people can pause the game to go pee or get a Coke, but pause it without letting you do anything in terms of gameplay and (2) save the game in peace. But if you wanna check your map, and you're out in the middle of the wilderness, you ought to find a safe spot so that a wolf doesn't jump your ass while you're figuring out what direction to head in. If you're in the middle of a dungeon and you wanna read a book you just found, you ought to pocket it to read someplace safe, so some bandit doesn't walk in the room and skewer you while you've got your nose in a book. No more grabbing a bunch of potions to drink and restore your health/magic/whatever while time is frozen in the middle of combat. No more freezing time to change armor or weapons in the middle of combat. Configure your hotkeys to do what you want quickly without going into a menu.

I have to disagree with the eating question, though. I can't imagine anything more annoying than having to carry and/or find food to eat while on a long quest. If they did that they better make some MREs so I can satisfy the requirement while eating once a day.

I'm sure there will be a mod out sooner or later. Sorry to you consololololers out there.

PC Master Race. Console peasants, give up.

Kidding :)

I'm sure they contemplated it, but thought it would be a turn off to the majority of new people coming from Call of Duty and the likes. Then again, it is optional so I don't see the reasoning. Maybe because there really isn't anything to drink in Skyrim?

Wouldn't hurt for the option to be added, Anyone who does not want it simply does not select hardcoe mode. For those that do, it would be great to have it.

The food in Skyrim seems quite useless overall and having hardcoe mode would really give us reason to take that bit of bread we see in every dungeon.

I'll answer "yes", but I won't vote in the poll. Why? Because I'd like it, but I won't request it. Would be nice, sure, but I don't need it to enjoy my game, and I'm not sure I would use it, since the survivalist vibe of a fallout game isn't exactly what I'm after in a TES game, to which I have a way more epic-esque approach.
Still think that the devs can/could do more interesting new stuff with their game, though.

Yes exactly. I don't have a very good PC, and I'm nervous to try Skyrim on my Mac as I've been raised from a very young age as a console gamer. With the amount of mods that the PC gets and all the insane things that are possible I seriously consider getting a new PC. I feel like the consoles are a limited experience in scope, and they always will be, but I mean this is something that we had before that was removed.

Maybe having a list of "hardcoe" attributes in a menu would be the solution then. You could check off which aspects you wanted to play the game with that way everyone gets the experience that they want! I agree with the menu pausing, I find it awkward when I'm about to die and can see the trolls claws inches from my face that I am able to instantly regenerate all my health...

Also I'd like to see weapon durability come back.

I like the idea of needing to eat, drink and sleep but I didn't like hardcoe mode and similar mods in oblivion because they were simply not very fun, IMO. If there were a better mechanic for it, rather than eating just to dispell a debuff, it would work better. Maybe just add a buff to the foods, or the ability to establish a 'camp' where all of these things are done automatically if they're in the inventory.

I can understand that. I think you're out of luck though.
I cannot see such a change by Bethesda. If they'd wanted such a thing it would've already been included.
DLC's will mainly consist of more of things already in-game. More landmass, more quests, more items, more monsters. Not a radical change in gameplay. Just like they won't add more armor slots ;)
