Photographer Creates Incredible Night-Sky Image

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:50 pm

The amazing scope of this project has resulted in a fascinating image showing tens of millions of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. The zoom views and interactive views are pretty neat.
Also, there are some interesting media articles in the Latest News section. It took this guy a whole year to create this image:

http://skysurvey.org/

Nice image for a desktop. There is a download link there with up 3000x1500, and he will sell you some pretty huge high quality prints as well.

With all of the apparently expensive equipment this guy lists you will notice at the very bottom, he lists:

"GIMP—final assembly, curve & saturation tweaks".

There you go. GIMPin' to the max.

Loss of confidence: We are so small...
Gain of confidence: How ever could we be alone?

Ha. Take that, Photoshop! ^_^

If you look at OP's picture and go "Woah", then the Hubble Deep Field should make your mind explode.

Old news, though. :P

What's remarkable about this compilation is the breadth of the shot, being a panoramic mosaic of such detail.

It is important to remember that it is a panorama. The Interactive 360 feature on his site makes it easy to understand and visualize.
The Hubble image is astounding, although a very deep "slice" of space using of course the telescope.

Risinger states in the http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/seattle-photographer-captures-the-entire-night-sky-in-37440-exposures/2011/05/12/AFnuGIxG_story.html:
“This is not a scientifically useful image. This is for educational and artistic appreciation,”

Not bad for an "amateur", which actually means "for the love" of something. So it is a labor of love.

[edit]...and I hope he makes a lot of money from the prints he's offering...BTW.

You might try saying "Betelgeuse" three times...Maybe not Wiccan, but I've heard that can be pretty effective...

I just noticed that in the Interactive view, he has some Wikipedia Links you can click on for the various Nebula clusters and other features which makes it even more interesting.

I'll check it out as soon as I'm done playing around with the scroll map.

Love stuff like this, time to drift into deep though on how massively expansive the universe is and try to wrap my mind around that fact.

The hubble deep field was taken by focusing on just on small patch of sky for a few weeks.
If you take the OPs pic, then the deep field probably represents what would happen if you chose a single black pixel and continued to zoom in more and more and more.
There are no individual stars visible, every point of light in the Deep Field represents an entire galaxy.

Thousands and thousands of galaxies, in every single patch of seemingly empty sky.

Well I thought it was much cooler. Like staring into the depths of the universe. So many different shapes and sizes!
