physicked hair and clothing

Really? I mean surely your PC is more powerful than a playstation 2.

Can you give any examples of those PS2 games? I'd like to at least see a video of the "realistic hair physics". I'm no expert (at all), but it seems like it would be harder to do the hair animation for something like Skyrim where you have such a great variety of hairstyles and equipment (ie: different shaped helmets). Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, though (don't know much about programming and stuff).

I'm not opposed to faking the effect, but otherwise...

Maybe. The technology's there. Personally I'd rather not waste CPU(or GPU) cycles on it. It's a neat effect when done correctly but the wow factor pales in comparison to the amount of processing required for it.

I went with maybe as well, although leaning very strongly toward "No."

Most of my hesitation isn't about processor cycles, but about "the record with regard to past physics implementation." Think of the various random things objects with physics do- the table full of items that take explosive flight when you place one more item there, for instance.

Now think about the possible reactions when your physics-enabled long hair touches your physics-enabled mage's robe...and see if you can get an idea what my concerns are. ;)

I think that was a problem with the Havok build that the devs tried to slap on to the aging Gamebryo. Supposedly we're getting a new engine. At any rate, there's other software that can be used for physics.

Eat resources? Seriously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmzVxr-rOO4. http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1054154&hl=. Seriously.

EDIT: Okay, maybe not actually physicqued, but hey, close enough for tunnel work.

Which will be implemented and configured by the same people who gave us explosive table clearing. I don't know which way it would go, like I said- that's my main point of concern.

well noted but it seems that in fallout new vegas they have fixed that. im also sure it was fixed in fallout 3. so more than likely the new engine they're using will also be without that problem

In other words, you are concerned about incompetence! Ah-ha! :lightbulb: Well, you might as well chew your fingernails over the entire game, in that case. I know I am. :P

Don't you want hair, too? Instead of having stiff plaster hair? I'd like my character's hair to trail behind me when the character runs. Plus, you could do that for creatures with long fur (like a mane or something, not the fur all over the creatures bodies). And flags/tapestries in the wind.

Even if it is just animated, it would be a very nice effect.

I voted no because there's no way I'd be able to run the game. Also, I don't think it's likely that consoles could do so either, and they're pretty much the main platform for this game (look in your heart, you know it to be true).

What? Of course it could.
The only thing I'm worried about is severe clipping.

First off that is ANIMATED HAIR -> NOT PHYSICS BASED HAIR DYNAMICS -> and ANY GAME CAN DO THAT but not any game can do True Dynamics for Hair or Cloth.

Not necessarily.

Todd Howard: When it comes to the characters and the animation, I think there are other people who do it much, much better. That's something we've put a lot of time into - not just technology but people and talent...

For example Shadow of the Colossus has both clothing and hair quite well simulated. Of course none of it uses real physics calculations, but they should at least make some hair with fake physics using premade simulations for Skyrim.

I really hope they do.

The new TWo Worlds 2 has phyiscs on it's clothing and things.

MAny older games do it, Everquest 2 had physics on both it's hair (the long ones) and clothing. Which you could turn on/off if you wanted, it can easily be part of the video options for pc players.

I see absolutely no reason why it can't be done, especially in a new game. IT doesn't take a freaking super computer to do, Jesus what is with so many people here complaining about not wanting new thigns because of the co mputer power? Did you guys even PLAY oblivion? That game was a BEAST when it came out, bringing even high end computers down at the time of it's release.

People seriously need to shut up about Gamebryo and they need to shut up about everything they don't have a clue about. Gamebryo is just a rendering engine and has absolutely NOTHING to do with physics. Would you like me to name some other Gamebryo games? Civilization IV, Zoo Tycoon, Pirates!, LEGO Universe, Epic Mickey, Divinity II, Bully, and Dark Age of Camelot. How many of those play ANYTHING LIKE The Elder Scrolls?

Touche.

Yes, it would be nice. But I only want it if they can do it and still have loads of quests and other things to do, like we're all used to.

Of course we will! They weren't familiar with the tech (the console power) with OB, so we'll see a lot of improvements :)
