PhysX Card???

Post » Mon Mar 30, 2009 5:44 pm

Helloooo! I've been hearing alot that you can actually use a GPU as your PhysX card. I currently have the ASUS GTX 260 and planning to get myself a GTX 465.
Here are my specs, tell me if I can achieve this:

MOBO: P7P55M
PSU: ASUS 550w Basiq
CPU: Intel Core i5 661 @ 3.33ghz
Windows 7 64-bit

Thanks guys :)

The phys-x extra card is used on the ATI side because ATI does not support phys-x. Secondly very few games actually use phys-x so have a card exclusively for this is a waste of money. Also phys-x is truly just a term and nothing more. Its just essentially a tech demo by nvidia. Lastly get the 460. It runs cooler, less power, and is ranked higher than the 465. Over-clocking will also increase the 460's power.
Heres a list of ranked graphics cards:

Oops sorry i didn't answer your question just recommendations. The PSU might be lacking especially if your using a 260 as phys-x with a 460 but you should be OK as long as you don't push the phys-x card to the max. I might consider upgrading the PSU for stability reasons though as you might have issues with that.

Try the 775 - 1000w range. Multiple GPU's put a lot f stress on the Power Supply. Luckily for you, power supplies are relatively cheap. I picked up a 775w with 85% efficiency and modular, for only $100 earlier this year. Most power supplies stay within the $100 - 175 range, the wattage does not increase the price that dramatically.

That should be fine. :)

Just make sure your recommended wattage doesn't exceed what you can provide. Most graphics card manufacturers will provide this information. I know that my whole computer with a Nvidia GeForce GTX285 needs 550w minimum, 630w recommended, and it ran just fine with a 600w (couldn't overclock though). I have a 775w now so that I can invest in hardware upgrades in the future, so you might want to consider that as you look for the right power supply for you.

Pointless exercise imo. Sell the 260 to recoup costs of the upgrade or get a better GPU than the 460.

PhysX is one of the most overrated pieces of tech from the last decade. Sure, when it's implemented well it can be pretty spectacular but in comparison to total games on the market, it's only a very small percentage that actually support PhysX and an even smaller percentage of that which support it well enough to bother with an entire dedicated GPU for PhysX.

Just run PhysX off your 460 or whatever card you get because the performance impact of a dedicated PhysX card in most cases is negligible. You don't need a dedicated GPU for it. It's just a good way for nVidia to sell more cards.

I agree, you don't need to buy a seperate physx card your'e already getting a 400 Series. nvidia GPUs already have enough physx power to run just about every game properly. So a physx card may not really help. Besides, if you are able to get a seperate physx card, why not save up a bit more and get another GTX460 instead for SLI. It would increase your'e performance like hell

I would say go for the GTX 460. The GTX 465 is a freakin' joke. In most situations, the 460 beats the 465. It's that simple.

If you're gonna be short of performance, add another GTX 460 down the line. If not (I've been running Crysis at 1920x1080, gamer settings (enth textures) and 4x AA with mine), be happy with the GTX 460. It's a great card. I would definitely say it's the best card I've ever known. Not because it would perform so much better than all the rest of the cards, but because of what it is. It's a massively powerful card, if you consider just how little you have to pay for one.

I mean, you could probably get a 1GB version for like £160 pounds today. That's running Crysis well, with good settings, for just 160 quid. That's just bloody amazing, in my opinion.

Isn't PhysX integrated with the new line of Gpu's?
Like the Nvidia Gtx's series from 200-400's

Yes, but it is usually popular to have a second GPU and have that completely dedicated to PhysX, since it svcks up a lot of power.

But that would mean more heat production, causing massive need for additional cooling accessories.

PhysX is available on any nVidia GPU which has CUDA. So that's every nVidia GPU since the 8800 series back in 2006 :)
