Pick your Poison: Perks for Light and Heavy Armor

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 3:10 am

There was a thread naming most of the Blocking perks and I thought they were pretty cool. Since we don't know much about the other perks for skills, we can day dream about ones we think could work best for other skills. Since we all will be light or heavy armor, this is as good a place to start as any.. I know more ideas are there, this is just to spur thought. If you have suggestions, feel free to post.

I don't know about naming, but I like the general ideas. It would surprise me if you're wildly wrong about these. Light Armour will have perks to do with moving quietly and quickly, while Heavy Armour's perks will have to do with resisting damage.

Another suggestion for Heavy Armour might be a reduction in magic damage.

Heavy Armor perks could also deal with encumbrance, either increasing the maximum or (what I'd prefer) reduction of armor weight like in Oblivion.

I hope there is no perk that makes heavy armour weightless if you're wearing it, that was stupid in Oblivion. What's the advantage of light armour if heavy doesn't weigh anything?

Since this was already on Block, I didnt think Bethesda will make the same perk in another skill set.

Soo, naming convention is not to your tastes ehh..

Maybe I should have used Kyrponite instead of Can't Touch This :)

Disintegrative armor on touch is sick, but I don't see how that would be a heavy armor perk. I voted for the perks I want, regardless of what skill it's associated with.

I like Chaos Theory and Who Goes There. Both are very ideal perks for my play style.

Light Armor should have a perk that gives you a chance to dodge attacks, as that is the whole point of a stealthy and agile character: not to get hit.
The most powerful perk should be "Unarmored", which grants all the perk-effects without wearing Armor (clothing effectively becomes Light Armor, without the defense rating).

No idea about Heavy Armor, never used it.

I like Quick Step for Light Armor and for Heavy Armor I choose other. I would go with a less encumberence/no encumberence perk but that perk would only be available after all the other perks in the Heavy Armor tree was selected.

This should be a standard feature, not a perk, and certainly not the most powerful.

I really, really like the idea of the shu-fly perk you listed. Seems to fit perfectly with heavy armor and seems very useful, yet not unbalanced(as long as the percentage is like 10-20% max).

after mentioning a blocking perk which slows time so you can dodge attacks, i'd say all bets are off with what the perks might be..
i mean whats the point in dodging attacks when you were going to block them anyway?

Chaos Theory - ( greatly disintegrate enemy weapon on contact) ... a really poor name for that effect considering chaos theory is essentially small problems turning into big problems.. so perhaps "ever so slightly disintegrate enemy weapon on contact"

The signature ability for light armor is that it gives better freedom of movement so I vote increased speed(after the weight modifier have been added to the normal, unarmored speed),
For heavy armor I go with a modified version of the shu-fly perk: Give an % chance to have the enemy land a glancing blow, dealing only 25% of base damage. Having the perk remove all damage from the blow might be a little overpowered, but I think a 75% reduction of damage should be more than enough to be effective.
As a little side note: I hope they have removed the "weightless heavy armor perk". I am fine with a reduced weight perk, though. Only light armor should have a perk that removes the weight of the entire armor.

I doubt they'll be as interesting as most of these, maybe you'll get the speed one. I picture "% less damage", and "reduce weight of armour by %".

You could easily assassinate a glass armor smith. :ninja:

Yep, heavy armour is weightless from the very beginning. Wait... Oh, right, one still has to spend a lot of time to reach Master level of the skill and can possibly finish all quests and exploring without ever reaching it.

Oh, and Master Light Armor gives you 0 weight on equip and +50% more AC. What's the advantage of heavy armour if light offers the same AC?

You should make some for all confirmed skills. Different threads for them though.

So I'm interested to see how armor perks like those suggested in this thread would be implemented... how many pieces of light armor would I have to be wearing to make use of the light armor perks? How many pieces of heavy armor would I have to be wearing to make use of the heavy armor perks? If I'm wearing a mix of both armor types, could I enjoy the perks of both? What do y'all think is reasonable?

I would think you would have to be wearing a full set of armor in order to take advantage of the perk. Mixing armor types to get both sets of perks would be forbidden.

They all sound good to me.

But I picked other for light armour, if we get stuck with something close to an oblivion armour/clothing system, I want a perk for I can wear light armour under my robe.

I like movement oriented bonuses for light armor, but heavy armor should really be for brawling, what about perks that tie into other skills something like:

Momentum: you've learned how to put the mass of your armor behind your blows making shield bashes and pommel strikes (if they're in) more effective

Thats just an example, but heavy armor really should have a different feeling than just light armor with a higher armor rating and weight.

I voted, but with fully 280 perks, I don't see why all of them can't work. ;-D
