Pickaxes?

Post » Fri May 20, 2011 4:46 am

There's a massive amount of topics going on about spears but I had this idea of using a pickaxe as a weapon.

I remember reading about that one of the confirmed minigames is mining (NOT SURE THOUGH) and you propably use pickaxe instead of axe or shovel

or then it's just like in Fallout NV that if you have shovel in your inventory you can open graves. That would also work with ores. Going off-topic.

So if you have a pickaxe why not use it as a weapon. It could use same animation as axe I think so it wouldn't be completely impossible to add.

You actually could use pickaxes as weapons in Morrowind, but they weren't very good, mostly, they only served the purpose of making mines more believable. I'm sure in Skyrim, though, pickaxes will be used for mining, I'm not sure how they'd work, though, whether it's just if you have a pickaxe in your invetory then you can mine ore just by actibating ore veins, or if you have to actually equip it, or if the pickaxe can be used as a weapon against enemies.

As Selbeth said. If you actually needed a pickaxe to mine, that would be great. And it would be cool for instance if you had to murder someone in a mine or something, and to blend in you just wore miner's clothes and carried a pickaxe.

I know there were either shovels or rakes that could be wielded with the Mehrune's Razor DLC. Which is fun. SHOVEL POWER!

Althought that sounds cool, it sounds a bit to much "Hitman:ey".

I would like pickaxes to break specific boulders to make ore available; it should be time consuming, but worth it for a character with high weapon skill.

Sounds like FONV use of shovels to dig up graves. Yeah, should probably need a pickaxe in order to extract ore. Don't think one is going to be too hard to locate in a mine though, but it makes sense.

Yes, they probably will and should be in. Going by TES characters ability to weild those sorts of warhammers, pickaxes should actually be a more powerful alternative. But they won't be, and they shouldn't be more powerful than warhammers, just warhammers should not look like they do.

I just keep thinking of the armor penetration you could achieve with one. And with the perks: Improvised Weapons. So you achieve reasonable damage.

They could add them easily enough, but it wouldn't serve as a practical weapon, I wouldn't think. Unless they sought to design a quest that could use it... for example, you are captured and imprisioned to work in the mines and you need it to escape. (I know, kind of trite and not very TES, but just a quick example.) Or maybe it could be used for a "stealth kill" with a damage modifier since they seem to be over-hauling that aspect of the game with daggers. Overall, though, it's one thing to add "furniture" like useless weapons and such for ambiance and immersion, but trying to find a practical use for them? I don't think it's necessary. I think the game will have them. I think they will be useable as an almost worthless weapon, if you so desire. But I don't think they'll have any real practical function other than mining.

They can be used as weapons, so why not? I've always wondered why there were so many things lying around that you could pick up, but they have no purpose beyond weighing down your inventory. Seems kind of pointless, so why not give them a small attack point? (no pun intended) That reminds me, it was fun being able to use Big-Head's fork as a weapon in the Shivering Isles, though it was hardly worth it in a fight....

Yes, a pickaxe is one of the few reliable ways of mining, manual style. It'd be nice to have to use them to mine, as well as a makeshift weapon.

"Did you hear about what happened to Renard Rolando?"
"What?"
"They say he was murdered with a pickaxe by a mysterious assassin!"
"These are dark times indeed."
"Farewell."
"Goodbye."

Make sense to use them for mining and making them weapons would actually make the coding easier as you aim and hit the rock to get ore. But they are not very good weapons compared to a war axe.

Also sounds like something from old school D&D... I like it!

Person 1: Hello!
Person 2: Go away!
Person 1: Any news from the other parts of Tamrial?
Person 2: Stop talking to me!
Person 1: I heard that Tim got killed in the mines the other day with a pick axe.
Person 2: I heard others say the same.
Person 1: Go away!
Person 2: Goodbye!
Person 1: Stop talking to me!

(I swear, I heard a conversation not unlike that infiltrating a bandit camp)

Sounds like a fine idea as long as they're suitably unwieldy in actual combat.
