Picking up/ Floating objects

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 10:54 am

I know that we're now able to view object in our inventory in full 3d 360' views.

However how is picking up objects going to be handled this time? In OB they just seemed to hover which was quite immersion breaking. I know that graphics/technology have moved on since then, so I'm wondering if the player character will actually physically grab objects now.

If you notice the finishing moves (especially for stealth) you can see the arms move forward in a fluid motion and almost 'reach out' to deliver the final blow. I mention this as I'm hoping that the same animations can be applied to reach out and grab whatever I have over my cross hair instead of it simply floating in mid-air in front of me.

Has there been any word on this?

I think there was no info about that whatsoever, but my guess is they will keep it the same, the weapons fall on the ground or are standing there and when you press the button to pick them up they just disappear and reappear in your inventory.

Since it's a very minute detail, I doubt we'll know until 11-11-11 or until we see some indepth ingame videos.

that would be awesome

it would be nice even for potions that you'd have to reach in inventory and drink it - not that you can drink 10 pots in 1 second
so you couldn't fight during drinking but you could certainly use 1 hand for fighting (holding shield or blocking with sword)

Unlikly to the exstream if we can pick up every object in the game I'd eat my own genitals off. Same hardware same disc space yet will still get better graphics and more content... Sounds like witch craft... I don't think you'll see anything like this personal I like the floaty objects let's you position them precisely. If my hand was in the way it would be a pain to see and to couldn't tug or spin the objects like you can currently without even more exstream work. Dont get me wrong if a game came out where you could pick up rotate push and pull all the different sized and shaped objects u get in a tes game, with hand animations, I'd be very surprised, even amazed.

I don't see why it's such a big incorporation? many games already have this feature.

Not really...

In most games you can pick up items and hold it in your hand, but you can't put them down the same way just throw them or drop them.
You also, cannot just adjust them.

Well If I remember well there was mentioned to solve puzzle Todd equip Golden Claw and the use it on door, not just come closer to door and activate it with key item in inventory.
So perhaps certain features can be in, I hope on more light objects like candles and lanterns, as well on ability equip clutter items and play idle animations thats NPC use with such items, thats really easy task just on equip or on attack script, so if we equip broom we can sweep the floor just like NPC, such feature can be usable part of small radiant story task quest.

you'd eat your own... er, you know... you shouldnt say things like that unless you ACTUALLY plan on goin through with them, because what are you gonna do if bethesda DID add in the hand animations with grabbing items?

also, im pretty sure its spelled "extreme", unless you're referring to something else that i've never heard of before in my entire life.

Tha would mean they'd ahve to do an animation for each item to make the hand grab it correctly...

Incredibly doubtful.

If you actually think about it, the animations required would be pretty complex - procedural code to have the fingers close on the object and not clip, deciding whether or not you can actually grip an object at the spot you're pointing to, all the weight and torque issues (like, you grabbed a hoe all the way at the end of the handle. How does is move or hang?), etc..

...and then the final issue would be - ok, you've got it in your grip. How do you rotate and angle the object in order to place it on a shelf in the direction you want? And are all those motions animated with your hands?

And every time it moves in some odd way (clipping, rotating in your hand without the hand & fingers moving, etc), it breaks your precious "immersion" far worse than the invisible hand does.

Yeah, I'm fine with the invisible hand.
