Picking up Morrowind again

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 10:34 pm

Well, I picked up the Morrowind addiction again. Seems I'm not the only one who hit the "bored with skyrim" state and decided to go back to MW.

Well, I always played on xbox before, but I don't have my old copy of MW anymore so I had just decided to download the game for PC. Easier than tracking down a console copy in-store, I figure.

As I said, I've never played on PC before. With this new option and possibility, I was curious about mods for the game. I know MW PC edition did and still does host a HUGE modding community. What kinds of mods should I be getting to enhance my new PC experience? I'm not really looking at content addition right now (that'll come later, I figure). I know I would appreciate recomendations on a graphics/character model enhancement mod.

That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head, but having been on these forums for eight years now I know that this community will have plenty of additional comments and recomendations.

Thanks everyone!

I haven't tried it, but I hear the graphics overhaul is good.

Again, i hear that the graphics overhaul package is good, but I'm still using the venerable old Visual Packs, Visual Packs Nature, and VP XT as a "base" texture replacer, along with a host of "specific" replacers for items that need even more help. Better Bodies (Psychodog Studios) is the defacto standard body mesh and texture replacer, and there are a couple of even higher resolution textures to go on top of that.

The "standard" patches, besides the official Bethesda one, include the Morrowind Patch Project (replaces the old Unofficial Patch), and the newer Morrowind Code Patch (fixes actual code bugs and issues that were unfixable until recently). The latter is highly configurable, and it might take a bit of reading to decide which of the changes/fixes you do and don't want. I use about half.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1342119-have-never-played-morrowind-please-recommend-mods/ might be helpful. And you might consider, depending on your computing powers and affinity for modding, looking at http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html.

This one would be a good start. Just about anything that suits your taste is out there. Just go shopping!

I would also recommend the Tamriel Rebuilt maps if you ever get bored of the towns or just want to get away from the blight storms.

Once you're ready to move onto the next stage, and seriously mod the game, I'd second the Tamriel Rebuilt expansion maps. They're very lore friendly, and feel like a natural part of the game, at least as much as the official Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions. If you don't travel there, they don't interfere with anything on Vvardenfell.

I'd also recommend the various Less Generic NPC Project mods (each covers one city or town) to add a lot more NPC dialog, and Starfire's NPC Additions to fill the mostly empty streets a bit more. Abot's Water Life puts more than just Slaughterfish in the waters, and you can fish. Necessities of Morrowind adds food and drink requirements, and gives a lot of that "clutter" a purpose, plus you can cook those Abot's Water Life fish you just caught. Morrowind Crafting allows you to make your own weapons, armor, clothing, furniture, arrows, alcohol, and all sorts of other stuff.....eventually, with enough patience and practice.

Galsiah's Character Development or MADD Leveler get rid of the need, urge, or reason to track those annoying "multipliers", and allow your character to level up naturally through the use of skills. Both allow skills and attributes to eventually top 100. GCD always seemed better to me for a "pure" Fighter, Mage, or Thief build, while I prefer MADD for hybrid classes. GCD includes a gradual magicka regen feature, and I use Fair Magicka Regen with MADD, both of them toned down by me to about 1/4 their default rate of regain.
