piecemental armour

It may have been a pain to find so many pieces of armor, but thats the fun!
And im sure we all love customization, so more options not less!

I'm sure clipping was an issue...

and screw Morrowind's. Bring back Daggerfall's. I'm including clothing options in that decision.

o.O

they can't possibly simplify it more.. :S

but I'm almost sure they're not going to make an one piece armor...

They could make it like Fallout 3. "You get a body slot and a face slot. Deal with it."

I might stab someone if that was so. I'm all for Morrowind's system. Mismatchable gauntlets, robes over armor, 'clothing' class gloves/boots, separate pauldrons and cuirass. Oh, and NO ONE PIECE SUITS. Damn, that was my biggest irk with armor in OB. I wanted to use Brotherhood/Arena Raiment gauntlets with other stuff, dammit! D=

The more customization the better. That's all there is to it. People want to feel like it is THEIR Character. No one wants to get lame options to choose from and feel like "I GUESS I'll stick with this since there isn't anything better..." In Oblivion, armour wise... There was like what, a 1 in 15 chance another character looked almost just like you, armor and everything. They should broaden that horizon. Hopefully more of a 1 in 50 or 1 in 100 chance. I'd be happy with that. And they especially need to do this if they plan on putting in a co-op... Hopefully no MMO... Sidenote: I personally would enjoy the company of ONE of my friends during my questing. Anymore then that would ruin it, remember in Oblivion if you had more then one npc following you? You'd always end up hitting them.
Back to the subject, we NEED more customization. End of story.

I want the return of Morrowind's armor lay out. I loved being able to dress my character in so many different ways, steel gauntlet and pauldren on the left arm and just a iron bracer on the right arm. Or mix and matching the different sets up armor. It was such a disapointment how Oblivion handled it. And I want to wear clothes under my armor. I don't want to be sitting in my cold steel greaves with no pants on.

Although I've never played Morrowind, I would definitely advocate a return to its armour customisation. I would love more customisation than what was in Oblivion, as it would add to being able to roleplay your character and making he/she unique. However, I think that such a return is unlikely, and so therefore I think I'd be happy as long as they didn't simplify it further from Oblivion.

I agree - bringing back individual gloves and pauldrons would be a great idea.

First reason being, it adds the option for a lack of symmetry to your character's appearance. For example, why not have a character with a single massive spiky pauldron!!!
2nd, it increases the number of items to collect for your player (and let's face it, collecting items is one of the driving forces of RPGs!!!)
And yes, it does add additional enchantment slots, for those interested.

I would also suggest that there be some instances where a full armor piece (combined pauldrons and briastplate) would exist. Say, there would be separate steel pauldrons, a steel cuirass, and then a steel combination-piece that would have the same armor rating all three pieces (L&R pauldrons and briastplate). The combination piece would exist purely for asthetics - as an alternative style for your character. Such a piece of armor would likely have to be suitably rare and valuable in order to justify keeping separate pauldrons....

Definitely need several pieces of armor as was suggested in the OP.

Another thing I'd like to see is the use of layers, assuming you have the strength. For example if you're a big stout warrior you could wear some chainmail and then put your plate armor over the top. Or maybe a robe or tabard over the top of any of your armor. Would possibly allow warriors to obtain too much armor/damage reduction so if the extra layers were out I could live with it, just something I have thought about a lot.

The more items there are to find the more I will be inclined to search for them and enjoy the map, so yeah, the more items the better.

I'd also like to see some way of having a bonus if you're wearing all of the same armor type, because obviously a piece of lower leg armor is not going to fit well with an upper leg armor of different type; so full armor of one type should be preferable for protection and use.

Well 57 members more than I've ever seen on at one time but back on topic I agree more control over how you wear your armor would be nice as well as being able to wear under garments at the same time to give it an extra look.

The DB shrouded armor is one piece, no ? Well, bar the hood, but you see what I mean. Same with the arena skimpy-spiky. So how is that so unlikely ? :P

On one hand, that's less clutter. The Morrowind equipement window is so encumbered. Easier to put on and off, too. On the other, it's true there's no pick-and-mix with that. Hmmm.

The armour and clothing system of Morrowind and Daggerfall was one of my favourite parts of the games. More different armour pieces, and many different clothes that you could wear over or under it was really awesome and rewarded exploration even more. Instead of just finding a single upper body armour, you could find one leather pauldron, a deadric chest armour, a glass pauldron, and an enchanted shirt, and wear them all together.

It just adds a LOT more cutomizability to the game, as well as adding more items that the player can find (including more unique items so the player will more often feel that he accomplished something).
I'd even like it if boots were seperated into left and right too, they were the only item in Morrowind that was still together (one item, both boots, while gauntlets and pauldrons were seperate).

I am not sure if the one piece armour of Fallout was a choice due to the blood and Gore piecemental dismembering of the game , but I see no reason why this eventual dismembering couln't be used as well in Oblivion with piecemental armour with a bit of extra work .... just check for example the cryengie procedural destruction ... working with the cryengine I seen how to make this pieces ....

actually the way dismemberment is set up in fallout doesn't have anything to do with having one piece outfits. The way bethesda do dismemberment currently is fully compatible with outfits that are made in many parts. For example many outfits I have made are already made of many parts, the dismemberment is done on a per nif basis, basically you can set have gloves.nifs contain the correct info to attach to the correct bone set. and same for all outfit items... boots, greaves, whatever.

Crysis, depending on what you refer to, prefabricated meshes are setup to be destroyed. I think you can say trees are have procedural destruction, and as i understand it other things can also be set up to do it, but you need a to specify a 'cap' mesh that will cap the hole in the mesh when its been broken, which is the limitation, a complex shaped object is not going to be easily capped
statics like shacks are not procedural, they are usually set up in a special way to allow them to be destroyed.
Fallout has destructible environments too. granted it's simply replacing one broken mesh with the original one. And deffo not as cool as how crysis can set it up.

I'd like to see how it was in Morrowind. I remember not being able to complete my Daedric set for the longest time.

MW-style armor is great :) Allows for a high level of customization, and of course a greater number of possible combinations. Creating sets (which is always a great idea, if implemented properly) would be more realistic this way, as it would be more of a challenge to create complete armor sets, and gain the set bonuses from them.

As others have pointed out having separate slots for left and right pauldrons and vambraces/gauntlets doesn't mean that the items have to be labelled as left and right. You should be able to find a single steel gauntlet and assign it to either hand. That would make the searching less exhautive but still challenging.

An alternative could be to employ a Mass Effect-like show/hide toggle. In that game you could choose whether to have your helmet on or off. Here, you could collect a pair of gauntlets as a single item and then toggle between showing left only, right only, or both.

As for asymetrical armour. There are lots of instances in history when people have worn uneven protection. It depends entirely on what you are doing - jousting knights had more protection on their left side for instance, and there were types of gladiators who only wore armour on one side.

Piecemental was great, lets you make awesome combinations like glass and daedric, or ebony with steel pauldrons.

Oblivion was designed for the ordinary gamer - more action, less lore and what not. I think Skyrim is going to be designed for us fans - more lore, more epicness! :celebration:

I prefer symmetric armor and these things as a set. But if we have left and right, being able to flip it around makes no sense at all. I'm starting to get a different view on the whole armor mess, where what we usually thought of weight instead becomes complexity. So light armor typically allows the most flexibility wrt being piecemental, medium armor is defined by curiass and greaves (steel gloves and pauldrns on a steel curiass, but orcish boots with orcish greaves), but on a plated design you may not combine anything (the hardpoints will not match)
