PipBoy App - Requesting Windows Phone Version

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:37 pm

I had a long post written out, revised, and read over several times for proofreading, with links to multiple threads and a properly thought out explanation. This was lost when I got an error telling me that I cannot post links, with no way to go back to my post without seeing a blank space where my many lines once were. I'm going to bed now, I might give this another go tomorrow. I play eRep, I should know better than to spend an hour writing something outside of a proper text editor, with no back-up copy...

In short, I bought the PipBoy Edition, I want my PipBoy, and I want to use it, but I have a Windows Phone 8.1 device. I can make my own inserts and whatnot to make a phone fit, that doesn't concern me. I just want the app development seriously considered. There are many of us who already have the PipBoy Edition preordered, some who just want to use the app, and some who chose not to get the PipBoy Edition because it was (seemingly correctly) assumed that the app would be iOS and Android only. Some have gone so far as to open threads on Reddit or Microsoft/Windows Phone forums, but it would appear that none have attempted to create such here--on the one forum where the developer in question might actually see it all.

I already filed a ticket, and had my request kindly forwarded along by Mia--this is as much as I expected to get from a support ticket, and I expected to have to attempt multiple times, so I'm impressed by Mia's handling. Mia, who handled my ticket, also recommended in the response that I come to the forums here, and so I have done so.

I simply wish to have it noted that there is definitely consumer interest in Windows Phone 8/8.1 or Windows Phone 10 app development and support.

If any of you reading this are in the same boat or know someone who would benefit from such support, please speak up. As a company, development needs to be seen as worthwhile--it's time spent not working on something else, which means money lost if there's no money to be gained.

Sorry dude, but Windows Phone is the red headed step-child of the mobile world. The market is quite small and I'm not even sure if it's be worth their time to port it over. Then again, maybe they will, but they did not mention it so it seems they will not.

Hah, I'm aware that I'm using the late and unpopular line. I prefer the Windows Phone interface and functionality, and typically am not at all concerned with app availability--I use it as a supplementary device alongside my computer when not out on a run using it for music and being reachable.

Companion apps are an exception, especially when paired with a PipBoy replica which I happen to want to use enough that I honestly considered buying a $50 used Android phone off craigslist before deciding to at least *try* and show that there's interest. As a business, money needs made, so I won't be offended or upset if I never get the app, but... Hell, I'd happily pay a few dollars for this app, and already have the PipBoy Edition preordered. I'm not the only one in my boat either, though apparently the first to actually come to Bethesda about it.

That said, thanks for the welcome! o7 (Couldn't even quote you without an edit because of your link. Pffff.)

Obviously the only solution to that is to get your post count up by posting nothing but the word "Gary" over and over again. That could never go wrong.

I feel like that could actually go very wrong, but it could be argued that it's completely appropriate and lore-friendly spam!

Well I wish you all the best and I really do hope that Windows Phone gets the companion app at some point.

So the Windows phone won't have the Companion App? Man I'm disappointed, first it was Fallout Shelter, now the In Game Pipboy. Come on Beth, we don't all have the same phones!

The odd part is that they're releasing Fallout 4 on a Microsoft console, have plans to allow modding on said Microsoft console.. but won't even bring the companion app to Microsoft phones. You'd think Microsoft would have brought that up as terms for them being able to allow modding on the Xbox One.

I've spent hundreds of hours on the Fallout games, and look forward to another 200 or so with FO4 if all goes well. Hopefully I'll be able to do this with a PipBoy on my arm, but we'll see.

Does seem odd that Microsoft *still* isn't trying to leverage their gaming position with XBox to get their mobile devices a better outlook--especially with Windows 10 coming to PC, XBox, and phones.

... Actually, with that in mind, I don't even care if they don't develop the app for WP8.1, I want a Windows 10 app--since at least the Lumia phones (can't speak for HTC or the likes) are supposed get it late this year anyway. So yeah, a Windows 10 version of the PipBoy app, using the new SDK, should be relatively easy, and sensible.

Hey, at least iPhone users are beta testing for you--I hear it's been fairly buggy. You'll also get Shelter eventually anyway from the sound of things, though I haven't seen/heard a date.

Likely when Fallout 4 comes out, and good luck finding time to play Fallout Shelter when you have Fallout 4 to obsess over.

Android user here, and at one point was a Windows Phone user. I would like to see a Windows Phone version to give those on that platform a choice. The lack of support and apps is real, though improving every month. Maybe it is in the cards, and would more likely come out for Windows 10 Mobile.

Windows 10 is heading to be a big failure as MS is betting on it becoming the next digital store cow, yet even with companies like Bethesda are cooperating to bring their games to the MS console, they don't care about their mobile platform. Looking forward to their walled garden attempt crash & burn once again after Windows 8 debacle.

That's why you play Shelter at work, waiting in traffic, making dinner, before work, whenever--and FO4 while sitting at home with hours to burn.

I like Android and it's rather intuitive and flexible, so I might pick up a secondary phone eventually, but I'd rather not, because, well... The lack of apps is really the only significant issue with Windows Phone, and one that's not so bad as it once was. It's also not so simple as "why is no one porting code to WP?"

The interface is solid, tech reviewers consistently love the OS itself... But Microsoft isn't learning very quickly it seems. Flagship phones grab attention, and build popularity--they might not be the profitable phones due to competing with the iPhone, but the flagship phones are where you show off and gain fans. Microsoft might hopefully catch on that their high-end Lumia phones with excellent cameras and displays gained market share through good press and... then they stopped, and only make low and mid range, which leads to being forgettable, and their share slipped below 3% again.

The Lumia phones are still *good* phones, but there's no big selling point and so the only ones who have reason to like them are the ones who own them. I want a 640 XL, but it's nothing to write home about. A successor to the old 9xx high tier and something to replace the aging 1520 would be wonderful--hell, even an updated 1020 would grab a lot of attention, that camera was a major selling point.

In short, devs need to support the OS more, but Microsoft needs to start rolling out amazing new phones again and marketing things right if they're going to get any popularity to give devs a reason to support it consistently. Windows 10 will make this easier, but it won't make the problems magically go away.

The Windows 10 OS is lining up to be a great thing for MS and consumers alike, and a massive success--for the PC, Xbox, and for replacing the old XP embedded. For PC usage, I don't personally know anyone involved in the tech industry who's not excited for W10, where most of us were doubtful at best when W8 and then W8.1 happened. That's for the PC side. For mobile, things are still seriously unknown and could fail hard or work out as being the best thing for the market in years. Can't say with what's known as yet, and the current build for mobile is actually--while buggy--rather pleasant to use, and unification should make app support less risky in terms of possible return-on-investment--people will be able to use the apps on any computer, their phone, tablet, or even a banana yellow brick paperweight with an Atom proc and tiny screen built in if someone chooses to build such.

As much as I want to believe that with W10, MS went back to atone for desktop users, the fact is that it still is a storefront for mobile apps so that MS can become the next Apple: Get paid for hosting feature-lacking software. I'm fed up with walled gardens in my tablet and phone and certainly don't want my desktop to turn into another. So as someone who have been using Windows for 25 years, I'm looking forward to the fusion of iOS & Windows crashing and burning, so that Fallout 5 won't be an 'app'.

The way things stand, with the massive amount of profit and popularity Apple holds, Microsoft has sort of been forced to try their hands at this idea--though they're still not all-in with it, which shows that some in that camp are still trying to be reasonable and practical. People have gone out of their way to make known that they don't like how Microsoft handles things traditionally and that Apple is the ideal company. It annoys me, but this is apparently what people want. Give the people what they think they want and maybe they'll realize that they don't know what they want as it makes life [censored]. I'm all for seeing people forced to reap what they've been sowing for years, really.

Then in a few years, after things fall apart, we might get back to something actually usable and worthwhile, who knows? ... Then again, maybe Apple will just rule over everything in the future. That'd make things worse...

+1 to wanting the stuff on Windows Phone. I'd really been hoping that at the Microsoft conference they were going to announce a version, but no dice.

Please show that you're more enlightened and set our world on fire by bringing such a nice app to Windows! :D

I would like a Windows Pipboy app, the Nokia(Microsoft phone) lacks a serious amount of new games, I mostly play the emulated ones. I hope we get Fallout Shelter on there too, cause I would love to play that game on my windows phone.

Surprised that Bethesda wouldn't make an app for Windows phones, considering they've climbed into bed with Microsoft on more than one occasion (including bringing mods to the Xbox One before PS4).
